Remarriage?

Marriage and Divorce

Who can marry? [a scriptural right] Who cannot marry? [no scriptural right] What are “sexual immorality” and “adultery”? Does “not under bondage” mean “free to marry”?

• “Mental Divorce”, “Post-civil-divorce putting away” Can the “innocent party” remarry if “guilty” does?

Apostolic Teaching And Application− Married or Bound?

Page 4: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Marriage and Divorce

• Some argue that non-Christians who get divorced and remarried for just any reason do not commit adultery because they do not know the law of Christ, and thus are not accountable to it

Apostolic Teaching And Application− Married or Bound?

− Is Marriage Law Universal or “For Believers Only”?

› “Problem” situations where this might occur:- 2 non-Christians divorced and remarried, now want to serve God- Christian marries non-Christian, discovers was divorced before- 2 Christians marry; but one (both?) divorced before conversion

Page 5: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Marriage and Divorce

• Therefore, we are told that it is only AFTER becoming a Christian that Christ’s marriage laws apply

• Some argue that non-Christians who get divorced and remarried for just any reason do not commit adultery because they do not know the law of Christ, and thus are not accountable to it

Apostolic Teaching And Application− Married or Bound?

− Is Marriage Law Universal or “For Believers Only”?

› is this position taught by the scriptures?

Page 6: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Universal or “Believer Only”?

• Jesus and apostles applied this as part of the gospel

• Genesis 2 was delivered universally – there was no Jew or Gentile, no distinction of “believer” or “unbeliever” at the time the law was given!

Apostolic Teaching And Application− As we’ve seen: Matthew 19:1-10, Mark 10:1-12,

Rom. 7:1-4, and 1 Cor. 7 all appeal to Gen. 2:24

› Mark 1:14-15; 1 Corinthians 7:1, 10-15; etc. • The gospel is meant for everyone, believer or not

Page 7: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Apostolic Teaching And ApplicationMatthew 28:18-20

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go…make disciples of all the nations…teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”

Mark 16:15“Go into all the world…preach the gospel to every creature.”

Luke 24:47“…repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

Universal or “Believer Only”?

Page 8: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Apostolic Teaching And ApplicationJohn 3:16-17

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

John 12:47-48“…I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words…the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.”

Universal or “Believer Only”?

Page 9: And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him… Hebrews 5:9

Apostolic Teaching And ApplicationActs 2:38-39

“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins…For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 17:26-27, 30-31“…He has made from one blood every nation of men…so that they should seek the Lord… Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent…because…He will judge the world in righteousness…”

Universal or “Believer Only”?

• 1 Cor 5:9-10 says “sexually immoral” exist in the world

Apostolic Teaching And Application− As we’ve seen: Matthew 19:1-10, Mark 10:1-12,

Rom. 7:1-4, and 1 Cor. 7 all appeal to Gen. 2:24

› 1 Cor 5:13: God will judge them, though “outside” Christ

− The “sexually immoral” and “adulterers” in 1 Cor 5-6

› It is Christ who actually judges, by means of the gospel: John 12:48; Acts 17:30-31; 2 Timothy 4:1-2; Rom. 2:12-16 › Whether “in Christ” [Gal 3:27] or “outside”, accountable!

Universal or “Believer Only”?

• 1 Cor 6:9-11: they had been fornicators, adulterers, etc. • 1 Cor 5:9-10 says “sexually immoral” exist in the world

Apostolic Teaching And Application− As we’ve seen: Matthew 19:1-10, Mark 10:1-12,

Rom. 7:1-4, and 1 Cor. 7 all appeal to Gen. 2:24

› When? Before they were washed, sanctified, justified: i.e. before they were Christians

− The “sexually immoral” and “adulterers” in 1 Cor 5-6

› These were accountable for their sins of fornication and adultery before Christ: in fact, it’s why they needed Him!

Apostolic Teaching And Application− Married or Bound?

− Is Marriage Law Universal or “For Believers Only”?

› Some argue that since Christians are forgiven based on their faith as they are baptized, adultery (as with all sin) is “washed away”, just as Paul mentions in Acts 22:16

YES!• Does baptism “wash away” adultery?

- 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 also says “such were some of you” of some adulterers who “were washed…were sanctified…were justified…”• Therefore, their adultery must have been washed away?
