Dedication

This work, "Volunteer Thoughts and Auxiliary Installations," had many contributors; it is definitely a joint venture and, for Iona Mayville, a true labor of love. Iona was the one that suggested at a meeting of the CAHHS Committee on Volunteer Services that such a publication would be a useful tool and something the Association should consider publishing. In true volunteer spirit, the Committee appointed Iona chairman of the project. Through the Committee, area council and regional meetings (as well as to our 2002 Volunteer Convention participants) the call went out to our auxiliaries to send us their favorite poems, essays, cartoons, recipes, quotations and installations pertaining to volunteerism. After almost a year of requesting and receiving these items, Iona had several files to sift through and determine what would best suit the needs of this publication. Once that was accomplished she spent hours, days, in fact weeks, in front of her computer assembling, classifying, organizing, reviewing, typing, reorganizing, proofreading and coordinating with staff to bring you this end result. Our heartfelt thanks go to Iona Mayville of Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks for taking on this project and seeing it through to completion. It is to hospital volunteers everywhere, who have come forth with many useful suggestions, quotes and installations—with the same sort of unselfishness that marks their daily service in the halls of our hospitals—that this publication is fondly and respectfully dedicated.

A Volunteer When God was making man, And He viewed His creation, He planted unique talents, To meet every situation. And in a very chosen few, He placed a special seed, Saying, “This will be a helper, For those who are in need.” Then He smiles His approval, And the angels hovering near, Heard Him whisper softly, “Now, I’ve made a volunteer.” Copyright, June 15, 1994, By Lorie Pope Pauly

Volunteers are Special People There’s a rare and special quality In the way some people live.

However busy they may be, They still have time to give.

Anything you ask or need They’ll do their very best.

No matter what the task is Or simple the request.

Kindness just comes naturally To this rare and selfless few, Special giving people, People just like you!

Thanks for volunteering . . . Unknown

I’ll Show You a Volunteer Show me a person who spends endless hours in training without pay, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Show me a person where a cry for help brings split-second dispatch, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Show me a person who is devastated when lives are lost or maimed, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Show me a person who is graciously welcomed as a next-door neighbor, And, I’ll show you a volunteer. Anonymous

The Gift The gift of encouragement Should be given each day— Pass it out freely And in gentle ways. There’s no need for ribbons To make it look grand— Just the simple encouragement Of a kind, helping hand. Joan Stephen

The Rarest of Gifts Everyday is a reason for giving, and Giving is the key to living . . . So let us give “ourselves” away Not just today but every day . . . And remember a kind or thoughtful deed Or a hand outstretched in a time of need Is the rarest of gifts, for it is a part Not of the purse but of a loving heart . . . And he who gives of himself will find True joy of heart and peace of mind. Unknown

Kindness It is the history of our kindnesses That alone makes this world tolerable. If it were not for that, for the effect of Kind words, kind looks, kind letters… I should be inclined to think our life A practical jest in the worst possible spirit. Robert Louis Stevenson

Friendship I hold in my hands A box of gold. With a secret inside That has never been told.

The box is priceless But as I see, The treasure inside Is far more precious to me.

Today I share This treasure with thee. It’s the treasure of friendship You’ve given to me . . . Unknown

The Priceless Gift A quiet walk, a tender touch An eager smile can mean so much I recall, as dawn breaks, filling days And touching lives in many ways. I helped a loved one find a gift I’m there when spirits need a lift. I hold the hands of those in pain And listen as our guests explain Their tears of joy or tears of grief My presence here provides relief. I start each morning with a prayer— “Where there is need, let me be there” For little things I do each day Help those I meet along the way I’m a caring part of every shift. I VOLUNTEER – THE PRICELESS GIFT. Unknown Submitted by Paula D. Castles, Woodland Healthcare Auxiliary, Woodland, CA

How to Make a Great Day Give away a smile. Forgive yourself for past mistakes. Realize your imperfections. Discover your possibilities. Make a new friend. Accept responsibility for everything you do. Refuse responsibility for anyone else’s actions. Dream one dream. Watch a sunset. Cherish what you have.

There Is Only One You Even in stillness, there is beauty and life, Even in solitude, there is happiness and love. What you see and what you feel matters. Who you are, what you will become is up to you. You are the master of your universe! Until there is chaos, you don’t appreciate the quiet. Until there are crowds, you don’t appreciate being alone. Now is the time to reflect and realize what you have. No matter what your lot in life, you are unique. Take time now to discover yourself; it’s never too late. You always have something to contribute. If you are lonely, be a friend, share a smile. For the hectic, find a slice of solitude, no matter how small. Life is not always as it appears. You have the power to alter yours and make a difference. You are rare and unmatched… There is only one you. And YOU are SPECIAL. Contributed by Linda Yarbrough Mayers Memorial Hospital Auxiliary

A Little Time If you want to make a difference In the theme and scheme of things If you want to be a doer Not just a player of life’s games We’re not asking for your money Wouldn’t accept a cryin’ dime What we need from you most of all, Is a little of your time. Volunteers Through the door walks an inquisitor, I smile from the station reading “Visitor” And I point her on her way. At the Gift Shop she finds, Again, I am there. I understand. I fill her hand With items reflecting love and care.

On another floor, I give relief To loved ones overcome by grief. I hold the hand of one in pain And listen as policies are explained.

You see, I have many roles, many faces’ Different names in different places. But whenever there is need for care, Look around – I am there.

These little things along the way, I trust make this a brighter day. Guiding those I encounter on my shift. I volunteer. THE PRICELESS GIFT. Contributed by Karen Garvin, DVS Presbyterian Community Hospital, Whittier, CA

Creed for Volunteer Leaders To foster creativity rather than conformity To guide rather than lead To clarify rather than supplant To respect rather than judge To motivate rather than captivate To listen rather than tell To encourage rather than discourage To link rather than divide To innovate rather than imitate To free rather than limit To make independent rather dependent. Volunteers Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes. All ages are found within. But they all have one thing in common They all help folks to win.

They must come equipped with a warm heart That daily beats with a sense of caring To see that others around are not hurting And if there’s a chance of sharing.

Volunteers are unselfish and giving When they see someone with worrisome needs Never think twice when you are assisting After all, you are planting God’s seeds. Fred Connolly, Volunteer Fallbrook Hospital Auxiliary

This Moment I may never see tomorrow, there's no written guarantee, And things that happened yesterday belong to history. I cannot predict the future, and I cannot change the past, I have just the present moment; I must treat it as my last. I must use this moment wisely, for it soon will pass away, And be lost to me forever as part of yesterday. I must exercise compassion, help the fallen to their feet, Be a friend unto the friendless, make an empty life complete. I must make this moment precious for it will not come again, And I can never be content with things that might have been. Kind words I fail to say this day may ever be unsaid, For I know not how short may be the path that lies ahead. The unkind things I do today may never be undone, And friendships that I fail to win may nevermore be won. I may not have another chance on bended knee to pray, And thank my God with humble heart for giving me this day. I may never see tomorrow, but this moment is my own, It's mine to use or cast aside, the choice is mine, alone. I have just this precious moment in the sunlight of today, Where the dawning of tomorrow meets the dust of yesterday.

Courage Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”

On Changes Change is the only absolute in the world, the only thing that you can depend on. Nothing stays the same, bringing with it new beginnings and sometimes unexpected endings. You can hold on to the past and get left in the dust; or, you can choose to jump on the ride of life and live a new adventure with perseverance and an open mind.

Irene Dunlap

Attitude The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company . . . a church . . . a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past . . . we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude . . . I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you . . . we are in charge of our attitudes.

Thanks, Volunteer Thanks for all the little things, The “done and then forgotten” things, The “oh, it’s simply nothing” things That make our days much brighter. With unobtrusive, friendly things, And “never mind the trouble” things, And “won’t you let me help you” things, You’ve made our hearts much lighter.

The Value of a Smile That thing that goes the farthest Toward making life worthwhile That costs the least and does the most, It’s just a pleasant smile. The smile that bubbles from a heart That loves its fellow man Will drive away the clouds of gloom And coax the sun again. It’s full of worth and goodness, too, With genial kindness blent, It’s worth a million dollars, And it doesn’t cost a cent. Anonymous

A Poem for Volunteers Once upon eternity Above the clouds so high, There were some chosen angels Who had no wings to fly. Their hands were made for helping, And their hearts were tender, too. Their smiles were warm and happy. And glowed as halos do. So God sent down these angels, Because they were such dears, To spread their gentle love on earth, We call them VOLUNTEERS.

Good Things There’s something good that you can say About each person whom you know, Some kindly thought you can convey That lights the eye and brings a glow. You have the power to bring some joy To one who finds the going rough. Some anxious girl or troubled boy May find a word from you enough. It’s strange what kindly words can do To cure an inward hurt and shed Some light that brings a brighter view Why should we leave those words unsaid? Charles G. Reigner

Thinking If you think you are beaten . . . you are. If you think that you dare not . . . you don’t. If you’d like to win but think you can’t It is almost a cinch you won’t. For out in the world you’ll find Success begins with a person’s will. It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you’re outclassed . . . you are. You’ve got to think high to rise. You’ve got to be sure of yourself Before you can ever win the prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man. But soon or later the man who wins Is the one who thinks he can. A Creed to Live By Don’t underestimate your worth by comparing yourself to others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Don’t set goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would life, For without them life is meaningless.

Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living life one day at a time, you will live all the days of your life.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love, the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly, and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Don’t dismiss your dreams – to be without dreams is to be without hope; To be without hope is to be without purpose.

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you’re going.

LIFE IS NOT A RACE, BUT A JOURNEY TO BE SAVORED EACH STEP OF THE WAY. Author Unknown

We Get What We Give There are friends for those who are friendly, And beauty for those who see. There is knowledge for those who seek it, And that means you and me. There is gentleness for the gentle, And joy for those who cheer. There are chances for those who seize them, And music for those who hear. There is love for those who are loving, And kindness for those who are kind. For we get what we give to others, And whatever we seek—we find.

What a Hug Can Do It’s wondrous what a hug can do, A hug can cheer you when you’re blue. A hug can say, “I love you so” Or “I hate to see you go.” A hug is “Welcome back again” And “Great to see you! A Memory System Forget each kindness that you do As soon as you have done it; Forget the praise that falls to you The moment you have won it; Forget that slander that you hear Before you can repeat it; Forget each slight, each spite, each sneer, Wherever you may meet it. Remember every kindness done To you, whate’er its measure; Remember praise by others won, And pass it on with pleasure; Remember every promise made, And keep it to the letter; Remember those who lend you aid, And be a grateful debtor. Remember all the happiness That comes your way in living; Forget each worry and distress, Be hopeful and forgiving; Remember good, remember truth, Remember heaven’s above you; And you will find, through age and youth, True joys, and hearts to love you. Patricia Leonard

The allergists voted to scratch it, The anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, The cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no, The dermatologists preferred no rash moves, The gastroenterologists had a gut feeling about it, The internists thought it was a hard pill to swallow, The microsurgeons were thinking along the same vein, The neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve, The obstetricians stated that they were laboring under a misconception, The ophthalmologists considered the idea to be shortsighted, The orthopedists issued a joint resolution, The parasitologists said, “Well, if you encyst,” The pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body,” The pediatricians said, “Grow up!” The plastic surgeons said, “This puts a whole new face on the matter,” The podiatrists thought it was a big step forward, The proctologist said, “We are in arrears,” The psychiatrists thought it was madness, The radiologists could see right through it, The surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing, The urologist felt the scheme wouldn’t hold water.

The Gift of the Volunteer You are a special person. You have chosen at this stage in your life to be a volunteer. Without you, life could not continue at the level it now exists. Hospitals could not deliver the personal attention needed. Churches would be empty. Civic groups would cease to exist. Most of the programs, which now provide health care and special services to the less fortunate, would end. You are important. We need you and the “we” I am referring to is the world. So thank you for sharing the most valuable resource you have— yourself—with us. We can never repay you, but of course you know that and, therefore, you have discovered the greatest secret of all—that love, the greatest emotion, can be the only reward for the “sweetest debt”—service. Thank you for adding to the LOVE in the world. Mitch Henson, Associate Pastor, Glendale City Church

The Volunteer A rare breed, they, the volunteers, opposite of the profiteers. They give their time, seek no return of gratitude, they little earn. They give their cash and talent, too. Their gifts are known by very few. They rarely hear the accolades, or ride in front of big parades. Day after day they help mankind, a better lot in life to find. They lead the young, assist the old, and yet their story’s rarely told. Unlike the greedy of this earth Who count their gold to fix their worth. The Volunteers with hearts of gold Can count their worth a million fold. Dr. Lew Hayes

What is a Volunteer? Volunteers have a style; they are fiercely independent. If you have to ask how much they cost, you cannot afford them. They are a part of an aristocratic era that is rapidly disappearing. Seen as a luxury in a world that has become very practical, they are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfishness, caring, patience and need for love of one another. Their presence transcends politics, religion and ethnic background. They are a luxury too often taken for granted. It’s frightening to somehow imagine what the world would be like without them. Find Room in Your Heart Find room in your heart for a stranger, your friends are already there, But there are many others who need some love that you could spare. Make room in your heart for the weary, for the lost and lonely, too, You know—but for the grace of God, one of them could be you. Each good deed becomes a seed you plant along the way, And it’s said—they will all come back tenfold to you someday. Doris A. Orth

“The way that light passes through the boughs of ancient cedars to spotlight a tiny flower on the forest floor the way that radiant ripples move towards the shore at the edge of the ocean, the way that a gentle breeze carries the scent of roses into a room is the way that kindness and compassion move through the world and blessings bloom.”

R.H. Grenville

Count the campfires by glowing flames Never by the ashes that fall. Count your days by the golden hours Don’t remember clouds at all. Count the nights by stars, not shadows Count your life by smiles, not tears. And with joy on every birthday Count your age by friends, not years. Count your garden by the flowers Never by the leaves that fall; Count your days by golden hours Don’t remember clouds at all. Count the nights By stars, not shadows, Count your life by smiles, not tears, And with joy on every birthday Count your age by friends, not years.

Volunteer Objectives Let every day start with a song in your heart. The good we do today becomes the happiness of tomorrow. What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. It takes both rain and sunshine to make a rainbow. In the eyes of a child you will see the world as it should be. You can complain because roses have thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have roses. Strangers are friends you have not yet met. Live for today, dream for tomorrow, learn from yesterday. How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it. If you love life, life will love you back. If you love someone, let them know it. Sometimes the perfect gift to give is a cheery smile.

“Volunteering is giving in return for all we have received.” Anonymous

Volunteering Expands Your Horizons! Volunteers make it happen How does your program grow? Look at the rainbow’s colors For a blend with perfect glow. Let’s join together as members To make a working team . . . The individual shades of color Joined together to create a beam Then by blending all the colors When we reach rainbow’s end We have the seal—a symbol That all our members comprehend. Ann Mazur

Helping Others Helps You! Volunteering can be good for your health. A study conducted by the Institute for the Advancement of Health in New York found that people who volunteer regularly—at least once a week for two hours—are ten times more likely to be in good health than people that don’t. Benefits include reduced feelings of helplessness and depression, fewer aches and pains, and an increased sense of self-worth. One important element in volunteering is getting directly involved with the people you’re helping. Donating money to a good cause may not be as satisfying as actually going and doing something for someone. Also important: volunteering because you want to, not because you feel obliged to. Cheryl Embrett, Performing Arts and Entertainment, Canada

Stats on Volunteering Here is a quick form that shows the key statistics on volunteering in America as reported in Independent Sector’s biannual report: Volunteering in the United States, 2000.

Percentage of adults who volunteered: 44% (Note: I.S. used different measurements to get this number. Don’t try to compare it to the 56% from the previous study.)

Total number of adult volunteers: 83.9 million Average weekly hours per volunteer: 3.6 hours Annual hours volunteered: 15.5 billion Estimated hourly value of volunteer time: $15.40

What is a Volunteer? V ery warm, gracious person willing to give of themselves to others. O ften a person with a busy schedule who finds time for others less fortunate. L iving by loving and loving by living. U ndying dedication to bettering the well-being of their fellow humans. N atural born givers of themselves. T he biggest people in a small group. E xceptional understanding of others feelings and needs. E ntering into the spirit of giving. R ewarded only by their own self-satisfaction. H.Q. MacAdam

Thoughts on Volunteering We live in a society that has always depended on volunteers of different kinds—some who can give money, others who give time, and a great many who freely give their special skills, full or part-time. If you look closely, you will see that almost anything that embodies our deepest commitment to the way human life should be lived and cared for, depends on some form of volunteerism.

Rewards of Volunteerism I was a “thousand points of light” long before volunteerism lighted up the sky and had an official name. I have had my lights short-circuited, burned at both ends and occasionally punched out. I hang in there because generally volunteerism is a dazzling galaxy of gems that streak across the sky and illuminate the world when it falters and cannot find its way.

I was thinking the other day that Americans are intrigued by royalty. Hardly a week goes by that we are not treated to headlines of a member of a royal family somewhere who is too fat, fools around, is a bad mother, doesn’t earn his allowance, drinks too much or is just plain boring.

Americans have never felt the need for a hierarchy who live in castles and get paid for waving and going to funerals, but I would like to propose a royal family for this country who would have no political power, but would symbolize what we are all about and set the tone for our nation . . . the Royal Family of Volunteers.

You cannot be born to this royal family. You must earn your way through its ranks. Just because your mother was a “queen” among volunteers and helped stock the treasures of your local art galleries doesn’t mean they are your legacy or that you will inherit her deeds.

Congress will not appropriate a salary for your efforts. If you are a Red Cross worker who rushes to California to aid victims of an earthquake, expect to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week, for no less than a month before you return home.

The perks of royalty, which usually add up to yachts, box seats, parades and state dinners, may translate into long hours, tired sandwiches, cots, rejection, cold coffee, screaming kids, broken down buses, and emotional pits that are tough to climb out of.

Royalty as a rule is recognizable. The Royal Family of Volunteers are nameless, faceless and forgettable. They are often taken for granted and only a fraction of them are recognized for their talents.

So how do you know you’re royalty? Ah . . . it’s the crown jewelers that give you away—that sparkling tiara of smiles you have given and tears you have shared, and the rich legacy of caring.

Unfolding the Rose It is only a tiny rosebud; A flower of God's design But I cannot unfold the petals With these clumsy hands of mine. The secret of unfolding flowers Is not known to such as I. GOD opens this flower so sweetly, When in my hands they die. I cannot unfold a rosebud; This flower of God's design; Then how can I have the wisdom; To unfold this life of mine? So I'll trust in Him for leading Each moment of my day. I will look to him for His guidance Each step of the pilgrim way. The pathway that lies before me Only my Heavenly Father knows. I'll trust Him to unfold the moments Just as He unfolds the rose.

A Volunteer Prayer I thank You, Lord, as a Volunteer, for the chance to serve again this year, To give myself in some small way to those not blessed as I each day. My thanks for health of mind and soul, to aid me ever toward my goal; For eyes to see the good in all, a hand to extend before a fall, For legs to go where the need is great, learning to live and forgetting to hate, For ears to hear and heart to care when someone's cross is hard to bear, A smile to show my affection true, with ample energy for the talk to do, And all I ask, dear Lord, if I may, is to work with others better, day by day. A Blessing May the blessing of light be on you, light without and light within. May the blessed sunshine shine on you and warm your heart till it glows like a great fire, so that the stranger may come and warm herself at it . . . and also a friend. And may the light shine out from your two eyes, like a candle set in the two windows of a house, bidding the wanderer come in out of the storm; and may the blessing of the rain be on you—the soft sweet rain. May it fall upon your spirit so that all the little flowers may spring up and shed their sweetness on the air. And may the blessings of the Great Rains be on you, may they beat upon your spirit and wash it fair and clean, and leave there many a shining pool where the blue of heaven shines . . . and sometimes a star. May your light shine on others and may the light of others shine upon you!

Twenty-Third Psalm for Volunteers Volunteer work is my candle, I shall not want for light. It maketh me to forget self in remembering others. It radiates God’s love to patient and worker alike; it restoreth my spirit It leadeth me down the bright path of service to my fellow man. Yea, though I walk within the walls where life is given or taken away, my candle burns brightly, the light ever gleaming. Through a nod, a smile, or a word, I know I am needed. I glow with the knowledge of my hospital, what it stands for, how it serves and my cup runneth over. Surely the rewards of my job far exceed what I have given, and the light of my candle of service shall glow in my heart forever, Mrs. Howard McAffee, Tulsa Oklahoma

Healing Touch May we console those who are exhausted, inhibited or uncertain. Help us to increase our capacity to listen and respond to one another. May we speak words of encouragement, recognition, and affirmation. Give us the grace to meet the lonely, neglected, ill and misunderstood, with patience, understanding, and acceptance. May we be sources of strength, hope and inspiration for one another. Give us the strength to express our concern and grief. May we embrace every chance to help, to heal - touching not only individual persons, but also a wounded world. Unknown

The Many Gifts We Each Have to Give Giving is one of the greatest gifts we can give to one another and to God. We have

gifts to share that enrich and give life and fullness to the whole community. Let me suggest some gifts that we can give to one another:

The gift of listening—really listening with no interruptions.

The gift of affection—appropriate hugs, pats, touches, small actions that demonstrate love.

The gift of laughter—humor, jokes, great stories, spontaneous responses that say “I love to laugh with you.”

The gift of a written note—a simple “I love you” or “Thanks for your help.” Brief notes that may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.

The gift of a compliment—simple and sincere: “You did a good job” or “That was a wonderful meal” can make someone’s day.

The gift of a favor—go out of your way to do something kind every day.

The gift of solitude—there are times when we want and/or need to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others.

The gift of good cheer—one of the best ways to feel good is to help others feel good by being positive, cheerful yourself.

You have so much to give and we gain so much from your sharing. God be with you in giving gifts.

God God, let me spread a little cheer. Erase a doubt, cast out a fear. Lend a prompt and willing hand. Be there to listen and understand. Let me be filled with thoughtfulness— Love others more, my own self less, And lighten hearts with a smile or word Too seldom given, too seldom heard. Frank Arnett

Why . . . ? Why is it necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin? Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin? Why doesn’t glue stick to the inside of the bottle? Why is “abbreviated” such a long word? Why is a boxing ring square? Why is that doctor’s call what they do “Practice”? Why is it that rain drops but snow falls? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? Why is the third hand on the watch called a second hand? Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food? The only thing wrong with doing nothing is that you never know when you’re finished. The human mind is like a parachute. It functions best when it is open.

I’m careful of the words I speak, I keep them soft and sweet. I never know from day to day Which ones I’ll have to eat . . .

Be Careful Be careful of your thoughts For your thoughts become your words.

Give and Do Someone is lonely, wants tender care. Someone needs someone, just to be there. Someone is longing for a hand to hold, To hear, “I love you,” words of gold. Someone you know needs a friend, Make it you, with help to lend. Someone near you has much to give, Graciously show them how to live. Reach out and touch, give and do. That “someone,” someday, may be you. Ruth Moyer Gilmour

Thought of the Month The body of every organization is structured from four kinds of bones:

WISHBONES, those who spend all their time wishing someone would do the work.

JAWBONES, those who do the talking but little else.

KNUCKLEBONES, those who knock everything anybody else tries to do.

But, fortunately, in every organization there are also . . .

BACKBONES, those who get under the load and do most of the work.

Volunteers—God Bless Them Many will be shocked to find When the day of judgment nears That there’s a special place in heaven Set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners, Satin couches and footstools, Where there’s no committee chairmen, No group leaders or car pools. No eager team that needs a coach, No bazaar and no bake sale. There will be nothing to staple, Not one thing to fold or mail. Telephone lists will be outlawed, But a finger snap will bring Cool drinks and gourmet dinners And treats fit for a king. You ask, “Who’ll serve these privileged few And work for all they’re worth?” Why, all those who reaped the benefits And not once volunteered on Earth. Unknown

Why be a Volunteer? It’s not for the money, Its not for the fame, It’s not for only personal gain. It’s not just for love of fellow man, It’s just to reach out with a helping hand. It’s just to give a little of self, That’s something that can’t be bought with wealth. It’s not medals worn with pride, It’s more a feeling you hold inside. It’s that reward deep within your heart. It’s feeling that you have been a part Of helping others far and near— That’s what makes you become a VOLUNTEER. Unknown

The Chair I’d like to take a moment at the closing of the year To comment on a subject that to you may not be clear. The question is more complex than at first it may appear Just why is it the Presidents are also called “the chair?” It doesn’t boost one’s ego to be likened to a chair. It’s true one may be well-upholstered, overstuffed or bare, But just between us—I don’t think that I look like a chair. This problem really puzzled me, then finally grew clear, A conscientious president must function like a chair. Some chairs are only beautiful; they are delicate and rare. The kind I refer to is the ordinary chair. Can anyone imagine any object anywhere? That is more downright useful than the ordinary chair? A chair should never squeak, or say or anyway complain But just go on functioning no matter what the strain. A chair must be efficient and equal to the task Of sometimes being “sat upon” by some well-meaning lass. A chair should be dependable and always well aware It’s awfully hard to sit upon a chair that isn’t there. A chair should not seek privileges that it does not deserve But should remember at all times—“it’s only there to serve.” The proper chair will not collapse when burdened with a care But stand upon its sturdy feet and calmly bear its share. At last there comes a moment when with worn and weary face The chair must tactfully take off—and find a corner place. It needn’t seek retirement in corners dark with gloom— Just clear a place for fresher chairs that come to grace the room. I hope I’ve served you well and never let you down. For surely I’m the luckiest of all the chairs in town. You’ve sat on me most gently throughout the months of use. I honestly can testify I’ve never known abuse. I’ll cherish every spot on me that you have given wear And so I close these thoughts to you With much love, “The Chair”

Funny Tidbits Contributed by the Twin Cities Community Hospital Volunteers Newsletter “Does your boyfriend have any money?” a man asked his daughter. “You men all think alike,” she said. “That’s exactly what he asked about you.” A Police Officer stopped a motorist on the highway. “Sir,” the officer asked the driver, “didn’t you realize your wife fell out of the car about a mile back?” “Thank goodness!” the driver replied. “I thought I’d gone deaf.” A GI stationed in Germany received a “Dear John” letter from his sweetheart. She was going to marry a sailor and wanted him to return the photo she’d given him. The GI’s buddies collected photos from every soldier they knew and shipped a huge crate of them to the fickle girl. When she opened the crate, she found this note: “Please pick out your picture and return the rest to me. I don’t remember which one is yours.” A golfer told his caddie, “I’m eager to make this shot. That’s my mother-in-law up there on the clubhouse porch.” “That’s over 300 yards,” the caddie said doubtfully, “you’ll never hit her from here.” At a New Year’s Eve party, a woman whispered to her husband, “That’s the fifth time you’ve gone back for more punch. Doesn’t it embarrass you a little?” “Not at all,” he grinned. “I keep telling them it’s for you.” Grandma and Grandpa had a busy day on their 50th wedding anniversary, with many well-wishers stopping by to offer congratulations. When all the guests had gone home and the two were settled in their recliners, Grandpa said, “Mother, I’m proud of you.” “What’s that you say?” she asked. “You know I can’t hear you without my hearing aid.” “I said, ‘I’m proud of you.’” “That’s all right,” Grandma murmured. “I’m tired of you, too.” Uncle Wilbur asked that Aunt Agatha sing Amazing Grace at his funeral. He always claimed his wife’s singing could wake the dead and figured it was worth a try.

Hospital Humor What’s the difference? A valve is a valve! (It’s a wee bit different in the medical profession.)

Morris was removing some engine valves from a car on the lift when he spotted the famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey, who was standing off to the side, waiting for the service manager.

Morris, who was somewhat of a loud mouth, shouted across the garage, “Hey DeBakey . . . is dat you? Come over here a minute.” The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where Morris was working on a car.

Morris, in a loud voice that all could hear, said argumentatively, “So Mr. Fancy Doctor, look at this work. I also take valves out, grind ‘em, put in new parts, and when I finish this baby will purr like a kitten. So how come you get the big bucks, when you and me are doing basically the same work?”

DeBakey, very embarrassed, walked away, and said softy, to Morris . . .“Try doing your work with the engine running.”

The Clique in the Auxiliary Word has been received by the Board that there is a clique in the auxiliary. Upon further investigation, we found this to be true. Furthermore, we find the clique composed of faithful members who go to meetings, who accept appointments to committees and who give willingly of their time and energies. They sincerely believe that the more one puts into one’s auxiliary, the more one gets out of it.

There is no question that the enthusiasm, responsibility and efforts of these members are of great value to your auxiliary. We suggest that you join this clique—it’s not difficult, in fact, it’s easy.

Begin by taking an interest in your auxiliary’s activities—make helpful suggestions, accept appointments to committees, and show a genuine interest in all auxiliary affairs! Before you know it, you will have become a member of the clique. You will be surprised to find how anxious they are to have you! Try it, you’ll like it.

Hesitation Her hopeful words attack our ears. The president needs volunteers For vital club events forthcoming To keep its infrastructure humming. I cringe. I rearrange my purse. I check my broken nail (looks worse). That clock must be a little fast— My watch reads just a quarter past. They ought to paint the exit door. Is that a penny on the floor? An angel voice sounds from afar: “I’ll organize the next Bazaar.” Another saint deserves ovations— She offers, “I’ll head Nominations.” The president relaxes, then . . . And I can look at her again.

A single SMILE just like mine could travel ‘round the earth.

So if you feel a SMILE begin, don’t leave it undetected.

The Secret of Happiness If you want to be happy for an hour—take a nap. If you want to be happy for a day—go shopping. If you want to be happy for a week—take a trip. If you want to be happy for a year—inherit money. If you want to be happy for a lifetime—serve others, volunteer.

The Garden Come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses . . . For the garden of your daily living, plant three rows of peas:

1. Peace of mind. 2. Peace of heart. 3. Peace of soul.

Plant four rows of squash: 1. Squash gossip. 2. Squash indifference. 3. Squash grumbling. 4. Squash selfishness.

Plant four rows of lettuce: 1. Lettuce be faithful. 2. Lettuce be kind. 3. Lettuce be patient. 4. Lettuce really love one another.

No garden is without turnips: 1. Turnip for meetings. 2. Turnip for service. 3. Turnip to help one another.

To conclude our garden we must have thyme:

1. Thyme for each other. 2. Thyme for family. 3. Thyme for friends.

Water freely with patience and cultivate with love.

There is much fruit in your garden because you reap what you sow. Jan Roediger

What is a Volunteer? A volunteer is a person who believes that people can make a difference—and is

willing to prove it.

Volunteers can be trained to do anything that doesn’t require a license or a certificate.

God gave us two ends. One to sit on and one to think with. Success depends on which one you use. Heads you win—tails you lose.

Volunteering is a key way for people to learn new skills, meet new people, enlarge community bonds, and contribute to the health of their community.

Volunteers brighten up the lives of those they help like flowers brighten up a garden in the spring.

Volunteers plant the seeds of love.

Unconquerable Volunteer Spirit 1 pinch of craziness 1 dash of bitter experiences 1 box of detours 1 pound of obstacles 1 cup of tenacity 1 ounce of determination 1 quarter cup of friendly sassiness and rebellion 1 whole bunch of appreciation and grace

Stir lightly until it puffs up with pride, know it’s done to a golden brown . . . and fills every corner of your life with the courage, compassion and truth of an unconquerable volunteer spirit. Judy Pearson, Portland, Oregon

Value Ten loyal volunteers in a line, One disliked the President, then there were nine. Nine dedicated volunteers offered to work late, One forgot—so then there were eight. Eight creative volunteers had ideas good as heaven, One lost enthusiasm, then there were seven. Seven volunteers got into a fix, They quarreled! So then there were six. Six volunteers with spirit and drive, One moved away! Now there were five. Five steadfast volunteers wished there were more, One became bored, so then there were four. Four cheerful volunteers who never, ever disagree, They did! Then there were three. Three eager volunteers! What can they do? One got discouraged, so then there were just two. Two volunteers remained; this rhyme is nearly done! One joined a health club, so then there was just one. One lonely volunteer feeling rather blue, Lunched with a friend, then there were two! Two earnest volunteers each enrolled one more, Doubling their number to four! Four determined volunteers could hardly wait, ‘til each other got another, total now eight. Eight excited volunteers signed up sixteen more, In another six verses, there will be a thousand and twenty four! So the rhyme is ended; I do not wish to bore, But let’s remember to value each other even more. Anonymous

What are Volunteers? Volunteers are like Henry Ford, they have better ideas. Volunteers are like Coke, they’re the real thing. Volunteers are like Pan Am, they make the going great. Volunteers are like Pepsi, they have a lot to give. Volunteers are like Dial Soap, they care more, don’t you wish everybody did? Volunteers are like VO-5 hair spray, their goodness holds in all kinds of weather. Volunteers are like Hallmark cards, they care enough to send you the very best. Volunteers are like Standard Oil, you expect more and you get it. But, most of all . . .Volunteers are like Frosted Flakes, they’re GR-R-R-E-E-E-A-A-A-T-T-T!!

Time is Short Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round, Or listened to rain slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight, Or gazed at the sun fading into the night? You better slow down—don’t dance so fast, Time is short—the music won’t last. Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask “How are you?”—do you hear the reply? When the day is done do you lie in your bed With the next day’s chores running through your head? You better slow down—don’t dance so fast, Time is short—the music won’t last. Ever told your child “we’ll do it tomorrow,” And in your haste, you don’t see his sorrow? Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die? Cause you never took time to call and say “Hi!” You better slow down—don’t dance so fast, Time is short—the music won’t last. When you run so fast to get somewhere You miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day, It’s like an unopened gift—thrown away. Life’s not a race—do take it slower, Hear the music before the song’s over. Anonymous

Recipe for a Volunteer A cup of caring A dash of daring A teaspoon of time on your hands A level teaspoon of your level best A gallon of self-rising energy A pinch of inability to say no A scoop of dependability A bushel of enthusiasm A peck of positive thinking Instructions: Mix with a dry sense of humor until attitude is firm; season well with miles of smiles.

Volunteers are Like Yachts Volunteers are like yachts. No matter where they are, they arouse your curiosity.

Who are they? Where do they come from? Why are they here? They could stay moored where it’s safe and still justify their being, but they choose to cut through the rough waters, ride out storms and take chances.

They have style. They’re fiercely independent. If you have to ask them how much they cost, you can’t afford them.

Volunteers and yachts have a lot more in common these days. They’re both a part of an aristocratic era that is disappearing from the American scene. They’re both a luxury in a world that has become very practical.

Day by day, the number of volunteers decreases in this country as more and more of them equate their worth in terms of dollars and cents.

Three years ago I did a column on volunteers in an effort to point out that they don’t contribute to our civilization. They ARE civilization—at least the only part worth talking about.

They are the only human beings on the face of this earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfishness, caring, patience, need and just plain loving one another. Their very presence transcends politics, religion, ethnic background, marital status, sexism, even smokers vs. non-smokers.

Maybe, like the yacht, the volunteer was a luxury. And luxuries are too often taken for granted.

One has to wonder. Did we, as a nation remember to say to volunteers “Thank you for our symphony hall. Thank you for the six dialysis machines. Thank you for sitting up with a 16 year old who overdosed and begged to die. Thank you for the hot chocolate at the scout meeting. Thanks for reading to the blind. Thanks for using your station wagon to transport a group of strangers to a ball game. Thanks for knocking on doors in the rain. Thanks for hugging the winners of the Special Olympics. Thanks for pushing the wheelchair into the sun. Thanks for being.

Did the media stand behind them when they needed a boost? Did the professionals make it a point to tell them they did a good job? Did the recipients of their time and talent ever express their gratitude?

It frightens me, somehow, to imagine what the world would be like without them.

Erma Bombeck, 10/88

Magic NEEDED: Magic wands (for all) Carrier pigeon (fake) Stop watch Measuring spoons Rubber bands Giant candy kiss Clock Although the face of volunteerism is changing, one of the things that remains constant is the “magic” that volunteers bring to their organizations. A bright smile, the touch of a hand, a pat on the shoulder, or a warm hug—the willingness to help—this is the magic that makes volunteer programs work, proving that volunteers do indeed have that magic touch.

Once again it is time for us to install our officers for the year. Installations are a special time when our officers reaffirm their goals and commitments to the hospital. It is also a time for us to express our appreciation and pledge our support to our leaders. Today we set sail for the tropics. Our ship is named “The Harmony.” We sail through lovely turquoise waters with the golden sun shining down upon us, headed for the pristine white beaches, the swaying palms and the balmy breezes of the island of __________. Before we begin our cruise, we must first ready ourselves for our voyage and pack some belongings. I would like to present each of you a tote bag—please use this to stow your equipment. Although we do not anticipate a rough journey, I would like to each of you to have a small supply of a seasick remedy. Should we encounter a storm, which could produce an electrical failure, this small candle will light the way. Should we be marooned, an unlikely event, I would like each of you to have a coconut, which will sustain you until your rescue. We do not anticipate any of these problems—I know you will have a safe journey that will take you to your destination. TREASURER: ___________ (Name), as our Purser on this cruise, it is your responsibility to maintain the financial records of our Ship and to report to us during our travels. I happen to know that you use Excel on your computer to keep your records, so here is a mouse pad to help your mouse move along smoothly. Should a financial shortfall occur, I would also like you to have this supply of cash. CO-PRESIDENTS:

Second Year Co-President: ________________, as a Co-President of this organization, you have had to understand the many instruments and their roles in the orchestra. Symbolic Gems NEEDED: Colored stones from Craft Store Small jewelry boxes Since the beginning of time, mankind has been fascinated by rare and precious stones. At one time, gems were believed to have supernatural qualities. They have been used to guard against evil spirits and to bring the wearer good luck. After a gem is cut and polished, it becomes a jewel. Just as jewels are cherished by their owners, the officers of your organization become jewels and are treasured by the membership.

(Ask each officer to be installed to come forward.)

TREASURER: __________________, the Treasurer’s gem is the emerald and is believed to bring riches to its owner. Playing Cards NEEDED:

Deck of Cards for each officer A, K, Q, J, and 10 of one suit attached to outside of each deck. The origin of playing cards isn’t very clear, but it is believed that the very first cards originated in China or India thousands of years ago. Once cards were introduced into Europe, the Europeans played many different kinds of games with them. Cards became so popular that in the Mid-18th century, Edmond Hoyle wrote a book describing the rules of almost every known game. Today, cards continue to be a favorite pastime, and people of all ages spend hours playing the various games that a deck of cards can provide.

Today for your installation, I am using cards as our theme. Within a deck, no two cards are alike, and every single card is needed for that deck to be usable. Likewise, in our organization, no two officers duties are the same, every distinctive task must be completed for our organization to have a successful year.

Will the elected officers please come forward?

TREASURER: ______________, you have been elected to serve as Treasurer. You are responsible for keeping an accurate record of all financial affairs of the organization. You will also serve as chairman of the budget committee. The card representing your office is the Ten of Hearts (give deck of cards). In this office, you may find yourself running to the bank or the auxiliary office quite often. Sometimes you may think you are at one or the other at least ten times a week. May this ten of hearts remind you of your tasks. Good luck.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: ______________________, you have been elected to serve as Corresponding Secretary. You shall keep an accurate roster of membership, and your duties also including taking care of any correspondence as directed by the President (give deck of cards). The card representing your office is the Jack of Hearts. Notice that he is holding a plume—that plume symbolizes the pen that you will be holding as you write notes to members and take care of other correspondence. Let the Jack of Hearts remind you of your tasks. Good luck.

RECORDING SECRETARY: ___________________, you have been elected Recording Secretary. Your duties include keeping minutes of the Auxiliary board meetings and the quarterly membership meetings (give deck of cards). The card representing your office is the Queen of Hearts. The Queen is the third highest card after the Ace and King. Likewise, you are your organization’s highest leader after the President and the President-Elect. Take care to accurately record the activities of your organization for history. May this Queen of Hearts remind of your duties. Good luck.

PRESIDENT-ELECT: _________________, you have been elected President-Elect. You are the understudy to the highest office in the auxiliary. When the need arises, you will assume the powers and perform the duties of the President (give deck of cards). The card representing your office is the King of Hearts. The King is second only to the Ace. You must assist your President in any way possible. May this King of Hearts remind you of these responsibilities. Good luck.

PRESIDENT: ________________, you have elected President of the Auxiliary.

You are serving in the highest office and are the Chief Executive Officer. It is an honor and a privilege, as well as a great responsibility (give deck of cards). The card representing your office if the Ace of Hearts. Listen to your members and lead with enthusiasm and integrity. Best of Luck.

You will notice that all your cards are in the suit of Hearts. This suit was chosen to symbolize the love, patience and kindness that you, as leaders, must exhibit to your fellow auxilians.

In the game of poker, alone your cards mean nothing, but when they come together (hold your cards up in a line), they are a Royal Flush, the highest hand. You alone can do little, but when you work with one another, you will be able to reach your goals.

As your installing officer, I duly pronounce you installed for the year ________. Thank you for your dedication, and I wish you the best of luck.

Endangered Animals NEEDED:

Elephant Beaver Dolphin Bald Eagle Owl

(These can be stuffed animals, posters or pictures of the animals.)

Over the years, many species of animals have faced extinction. Although the officers in our organization do not face extinction, the decisions they make while in office affect its future. Our organization will thrive under competent leadership. Today, we will install our newly elected officers using endangered animals as our theme. Each animal that we will use has characteristics that we will compare to the duties of each office. Will the newly elected officers please come forward?

TREASURER: _______________ (Name), the animal that represents the Treasurer is the Elephant. The elephant is the largest living animal on land, is a fast learner and has an excellent memory. Like the elephant, may your memory assist you in your journey as treasurer. (Give elephant to officer.)

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: _______________ (Name), the animal that represents the Corresponding Secretary is the Beaver. A beaver appears to be working constantly. It builds dams even if there is no place for another one and gathers food even if it has more than enough. Like the beaver, you will be busy writing, collecting, and storing letters and notes. (Give beaver to officer.)

RECORDING SECRETARY: _______________ (Name), the animal that represents the Secretary is the Owl. A symbol of wisdom, the owl has very large eyes and sensitive hearing. Like the owl, may you show wisdom as your pen flies quickly and noiselessly over your note pad. (Give owl to officer.)

PRESIDENT-ELECT: ________________ (Name), the animal which represents the President-Elect is the Dolphin. Dolphins have a distinct sonar system, a keen sense of hearing and excellent vision. Traveling in groups, they play and hunt together. As President-Elect, play and work with your members. Be attentive to their needs and help detect any obstacles that might be in your organization’s path. Like the dolphin, may your eyes and ears always be on the alert. (Give dolphin to officer.)

PRESIDENT: _____________ (Name), the animal that represents the President is the Bald Eagle. A symbol of freedom and strength, eagles are considered to be the most powerful birds in the world. Their large wings help them to soar gracefully in the air. Although eagles are courageous birds, they carefully stay away from danger. Eagles are believed to have the keenest sight of all birds. As President, you have been given power, but you also have responsibility. You must show courage, and be careful to avoid dangers. Like the eagle, use your keen sight to lead your organization to new heights, where it may soar gracefully. (Give bald eagle to officer.)

Congratulations to all—by working together you can keep your organization off the endangered list.

The Gift of Time NEEDED: A replica of time, an actual clock, a picture, or a small pin or charm

Today we will install our newly elected officers for the coming year. As we do so, let us remember that we donate our time to the service of others. What better way to show our support to these new leaders than by the gift of time.

(Ask officers to come forward.)

TREASURER: Our Treasurer is _____________ (Name). The clock that best represents our Treasurer is a Digital Clock. Each digit represents every dollar that we make—and spend. Keeping track of the numbers on your clock will take much of your time, and definitely keep you ticking.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: ______________ (Name) is our Corresponding Secretary—may I present to you this Clock Radio. The important parts of your clock are the hands. Your hands will be kept very busy responding to all correspondence. Your communications should come in “loud and clear” and with great frequency. Make sure your clock radio is dependable and set for the right time, so you will wake up each day tuned in to all our important events.

RECORDING SECRETARY: ______________________ (Name), as Recording Secretary, your hands will move fast. To help you perform your duties, here is a Stop Watch. You will start your watch as the meetings begin—keeping an accurate record of the proceedings. Then, as they end, you will stop your watch.

VICE PRESIDENT: _________________ (Name), as our Vice President, you are essential to the working order of our Organization, just as the second hand is an integral part of any timepiece. If our President, the Mainspring of our organization, ever breaks down, you must take over because you are the Second Hand. But as long as the Mainspring is working properly, your job is to assist her in any way possible. Please accept this Alarm Clock to remind you that your job is essential to our organization.

PRESIDENT: To our President, ______________ (Name), we present the grandest and wisest of them all—the Grandfather Clock. You are the leader of the family of timepieces. You must constantly be listening to all the other clocks to make sure they are still running. You will find that there are some who run fast, some who run slow, and others who just plain quit. The key to your job is keeping all the clocks wound. If this is done, then everything will run like clockwork.

You are now duly installed, and I offer you my congratulations!
