A.2 Read the passage given below : (12 marks)

1. Why is it that there are very few women players in our orchestras ? If onecould reply flatly - sex discrimination : they don’t want women in orchestras- that would be a definite answer. But one can’t say that. As a matter of factthere are, if not many, a few women playing today in symphony orchestras.Nevertheless, it is true that male orchestral players are in an overwhelmingmajority. Why is that ? I’m afraid, there is no one answer. There are physicalreasons why women don’t perform well on certain instruments. The averagewoman is not likely to possess sufficient lung power and sheer muscularstrength to play the tuba just as an average woman’s hands are not likely tobe large enough to finger a double bass satisfactorily. But what about theother instruments ?

2. I think social and family pressures have been very strong in keeping womenout of orchestras. Think of the prejudice that existed half a century ago againstthe so-called ‘nice’ girls going on stage. The stage was won out for thesimple reason that it had to have women to play feminine roles in plays andoperas, and was willing to offer a young woman more money than she couldmake in any other profession. Moreover, on stage, she was appearing as anindividual, as a center of attraction. This was gratifying to both her and herfamily. To this day, while the average parents are reconciled to seeing theirdaughter become an opera singer or concert artist, they don’t like the idea ofseeing her submerging her personality to become the member of a chorus ofthe orchestra.

3. Another reason why we have so few women orchestral musicians is that sofew of them play wind instruments well enough. They don’t play well enoughbecause they haven’t had the proper training; and the reason for that lies inthe history of orchestral music. You will find that famous European familiesof bassoon players or clarinetists taught their sons to play the familyinstrument. Their sons; but never their daughters. If they had any other pupils, those were also boys; not girls. And to this day, while women vote, holdpublic office and practise many other professions, without shocking oursensibilities, in this particular field, the orchestra, our attitude towards womenstill remains the same.

4. However, this prejudice is rapidly crumbling, and is likely to disappear entirelyin a few years. For this we have to thank our high-school bands andorchestras, which offer instruction, practice, and experience in playing allorchestral, instruments to boys and girls alike.

A.2.1 Complete the following sentences. Write the answers in your answer sheet againstthe correct blank number : (1×8 = 8 marks)

QUESTION PAPER CODE 1/1

SECTION — A (Reading) 20

Al. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow : 8

1 We’ve just left the dinner table, when I hear music coming from my daughter’scomputer. It surprises me that my daughter Ida is listening to music from a time sherefers to as the very old days. “What are you playing ?” I ask. “It’s Phil Collins,”is her prompt reply, while she shows how, with a few strokes, she can downloadalmost any song from the Internet. Times have certainly been changing since Iscratched my first Beatles record. Tactfully I don’t mention that I had bought therecord she’s listening to before she was born. The concept of a phonograph recordbelongs to a bygone age and I don’t want to spoil the pleasure she’ll get fromdiscovering her “own” new favourite musician.

2 The music brings memories flooding back. I have a sudden urge to bringback my record collection from the attic, where it has mouldered for almost adecade. Only one thing stops me : my turntable succumbed to the damp air in a

Page 9: And as I paused to hear his song - CBSEcbse.nic.in/engcomun.pdf · And as I paused to hear his song While swift the sunny moments slid, ... Your answer should be in not more than

cellar where I stored it for a good ten years. No, I don’t care if turntables areancient technology : I will find one. And I will restore my long lost record collection— which took up a good amount of shelf space — to its former glory. Buyingsomething as uncool as a turntable takes courage and planning. I find a promisingTV and radio store in the phone book but I am expecting a mountain of questionsfrom the clerk, who will most certainly have been born and raised after the demiseof the turntable.

3 “A turntable ? Coming right up !” says the young man behind the counter. He disappears into the storeroom and before I can say long-playing record, he’sback with a small cardboard under his arm. It’s too good to be true. An hour latermy new acquisition is in the living room and a respectful atmosphere descends.I’ve sorted my records into piles all over the floor. I find a Beatles album.

4 Behind the wonderful music now flowing through the loud-speaker isthe unmistakable sound of vinyl. It doesn’t take long for my twelve year old son’seagle eye to spot the turntable and he has to try it out. Jonas is technically minded,a child of the computer age, yet I sense a certain reverence as he picks up the tonearm and tries to place it in the middle of the record. Brought up in the CD age howcould he know what’s wrong ? I say in a soothing voice : “The starting groove ison the edge of the record.” “Does it matter which side is up ?” queried mydaughter. “It does matter,” I replied. Soon we were listening to a Phil Collinsnumber we both like. The generation gap vanishes as the music takes over. I relishthe moment to the full and cast a glance at Ida. She’s relaxed and smiling.

A2. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow : 12

1 Legends will tell you that flamingoes are no ordinary visitors to Kutch. Theywere the honoured guests of King Lakho and he had forbidden thehunting of flamingoes, which came to Kutch from various parts of the worldevery year to breed. For centuries the region has been a haven for the migratorybird. Today, Flamingo City, an island in the middle of the Rann of Kutch, knownthe world over as one of the biggest breeding grounds of the Greater Flamingo,is strewn with bodies of hundreds of flamingo chicks. The parents of these chickshave fled the island due to lack of food. Zooplanktons, algae and small fish thatthese birds survive on are dying due to a sudden increase in the salinity of the Rannwaters. One can even see dead fish floating.

2 Flamingoes need salt-encrusted, damp mud to build nests. The place wherethey build their nests has to be inaccessible to predatory cats and birds. It shouldalso have sufficient food. The right mix of sweet and brackish water in the Rann iscrucial for the proliferation of planktons and algae that the flamingoes feed on.Faced with starvation flamingoes have fled the island leaving their chicks to fendfor themselves. Till date around a thousand flamingoes have died.

3 Maharaj Kumarshri Himmatsinghji, a member of the royal family of Kutchand an expert on the birds of Kutch, traces the problem of increased salinity in theRann waters to the construction of dams on rivers that flow into the region. He emphasizes that efforts should be made to ensure that, at least some waterflows into the Rann. In fact over the years, the number of flamingoes coming to theisland have decreased because of the change in salinity of the Rann water. In1945, Salim Ali, the late ornithologist, had found 5 lakh birds on the island. Sincethen, the number has not gone above 2.2 lakh. However, the studies carried outon the Flamingo City so far cannot be taken as 100 percent accurate becausevery few ornithologists have conducted regular studies on flamingoes in the area. The reason : the terrain is so inhospitable that it is simply not possible to visit theplace every year.

4 Says Himmatsinghji, “The ringing of flamingoes is mandatory to conductaccurate and long term studies on the bird.” Unfortunately, ever since FlamingoCity was discovered in 1893, not a single bird has been ringed. No wonder questionslike from where these birds migrate every year remain only partially answered.

A2.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage given above, complete the followingsentences.
