Ancillary Evaluation

+How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary tasks? My two ancillary tasks, a radio trailer and an article for a listings magazine all link to my final documentary film piece and would both benefit the distribution and viewing figures if they were real media products.

It was important for me to use the correct colours, language and images in my  article for my documentary as my target audience was a broad one. I therefore did not want to target a specific social group, age or gender and therefore in order to do this I had to insure that my listings magazine would use the correct language to do so. I studied Time Out listings magazine and researched into its target audience and language.

One of the main reasons for an ancillary is to advertise and promote a documentary I therefore made sure that my ancillary targeted a broad audience to do this successfully. When presenting my article/review I used photos of the interviewees used in the documentary in a way which shows their personality to give the audience an immediate feel and personal view for the characters which is something that would I would want to do for the audience in order to make it more engaging and entertaining.

I decided to use KISS.FM as a suitable radio station to advertise and discuss my documentary. KISS.FM have three main presenters, Ricky, Melvin and Charlie all of which are young, bubbly and also chatty characters. This is something, which immediately attracted me to this particular radio because I believed these presenters attracted a younger audience, which was my goal. Kiss FM also support young people in advertisement with 600,000 unique visitors who visit kissfm.co.uk monthly. The script itself is very informal and chatty language, which I believe gives the audience themselves a comfortable feel when listening to the station. It also allows the presenters and myself to discuss the documentary in a friendly entertaining way which is something that I wanted to focus on. The time of which I would want the radio trailer to be aired would be around the busiest time that viewers tune in.
