JewelryThey had ring brackets and

necklaces were widely worn. A lot

of there jewelry where made out

of glass or cheap bronze. Most of

the women had there ears

pierced for earrings. There

brooches held the clothing on

for it would not fall of. They allso used gold for jewelry but

the people that did had the

money for it.

Chores.Women in Ancient Rome did not take part

in the daily work life of the empire in the

same way as men.!Although women were

respected, their place in Roman Societywas the home.!They were expected to cook,

clean, sew and in general maintain and run

the household.! CosmeticsMost of the roman women used makeup. A

popular fashion was having pale skin it was

made of applying powder chalk or they used

white lead. And red ocher was for the

cheeks and lip color and eyes were madeup with compounds based on ash or

antimony. Some cosmetics were

poisonous. The women's dresses have a

inner and outer layers.

WomenvotingDuring the years of the Roman Republic,

women had no political rights. They were

not allowed to vote, directly address the

Senate, nor mill about in the forum.Respectable women who spent time in

public places were frowned upon.

Nonetheless, there were times when women

used the power of public protest to get what

they wanted. One was the

demonstration of women

against the law.

Questions I had on this topic-did the women get to vote and make therules?-What where the chores they did?- What jewelry and cloths did they where?

- what did they do as beauty?

BOOM POW

THUNK!Natalia Segal!!History !!Wrestling was the first competition

to be added to the Olympic games

after the foot race. Wrestling was

added in 700 BC. Wrestling was

represented by the Greek god

Hercules.!  !The first recorded Olympic

wrestling match was in 708 BC.

Wrestling was used as a military

exercise without weapons. They

wrestled in a “ Keroma,” a muddy

and sticky arena. The wrestlers

were covered in olive oil and then

covered in powder to make themeasier to grasp. !!Wrestling was called “pale” in

Greek. Three points had to be

scored in order to win the wrestling

match. A point is scored when one

wrestler’s back, hip, and shoulder is

touching the ground at any time.

Another way is for a wrestler to feelpain or fear. !!One important wrestling position is

when one of the wrestlers is on his

belly with the other wrestler on his

back, trying to strangle him. The !wrestler on the bottom would try to

grab an arm of the one on top and !turn him over onto his back. The

wrestler on top would try to

complete the choke without being

flipped backwards.!  !!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When wrestlers broke the rules, thereferee would whip them until they

stopped. In today’s wrestling, whippingwould not be allowed.!!!

Rules !!No one was allowed to kick or hit

on purpose. No one could pull out

the eyes or hair of the other. No

biting was allowed. If one wrestler

was out of the Keroma, that would

count as a point for the wrestler

who pushed the other wrestler out.

A referee decided wether or not

twisting was allowed.!Famous Wrestlers!!Milo Of Cranto was the most

famous wrestler from ancient Greek

times. At one set of games, no one

challenged him, but as he walked

to the arena he slipped and fell and

was bothered by the crowed as

they yelled that he should not be

crowned because he fell. !

Milo Of Cranto!

!Milo of Cranto.!Leontiskos of Messene was also a

champion. He was not known for his

good wrestling skills, but for hisflexible finger bending skills. He wasable to bend his fingers back so far,up to the point that his opponent wasdisqualified. Leontiskos won twochampionships with this technique.!

What is the aulos

The aulos is made of one

cylindrical tube it is really similar

to a recorder with holes on the

side and a mouthpiece.

Originally the aulos was built of

reed or bone, but in time it was

ivory. At the player's end of the

mouthpiece is the

the Holmos is a bulb of

was more common than

two reeds. Throughout the

ancient Greece period the

aulos had three to five

holes. The number of

holes got bigger later in

the Roman time.The holes

The holes were covered in

a lot of combinationsusing the fingers to

change the pitch of the

nosie coming from the

instrument . The aulos

was played in pairs with

one player projecting two

auloi from his or hermouth at the same time.

The pair are not

connected but they are

held by the player one in

each hand at an acute

angle. They were held

with the thumb on the

bottom for support and the

fingers on top. The male

players often wore a

Greek phorbeia. This was

a piece of clothing that

surround the neck with

a strap on top. of the head

and it covered the cheeks

and lips with small

openings for the

mouthpieces to fit into.

GREEK WOMEN ROCK !By Tatiana Rizzo !

In ancient Greece, women had no rights. They were the propertyof their husband. They had to ask their husband's permission to

leave the house or to talk to a neighbor who came visiting. As time

went on, rights for women remained the same.!How were greek women treated?!

!Women were treated differently in different regions and poles (city states),

though always considered inferior to men. In Athens they were very limited,

and women of nobility were basically just emprisonned in their houses.

Ordinary women were allowed to go outside to fetch water from public

springs. In Sparta women were honored because they gave birth to new

soldiers for the polis, and had several rights Athenian women did not have, they could

own private property for example, and were usually managing everything cause their menfolk were always off to war. SO it depends on the region and the polis.!!

Welcome to the

Land of the

Dead !By Anthony Ayala !!Hades the god of the underworld

was swallowed at birth by his father,

the Titan ruler Cronus, he swallowed

underworld is hidden in the earth. It is

the kingdom of the dead and ruled

over by Hades. Hades is a greedy god

who is greatly concerned with

increasing his subjects. Those whose

calling increase the number of dead

are seen favorably. The Erinnyes are

welcomed guests. He is exceedingly

disinclined to allow any of his subjects

leave.Upon death a soul is lead by

Hermes to the entrance of the

underworld and the ferry across the

Acheron. There is a single ferry run by

Charon to take the souls across the

river. Only those who can pay the fare,

with coins placed on their lips whenburied, receive passage. The rest are

trapped between two worlds. The

souls then enter through the gates.

Cerberus will allow all to enter but,

none to leave. The souls then appear

before a panel of three judges,

Rhadamanthus, Minos, and Aeacus,

who pass sentence. The very good go

to the Elysian Fields. Others are

singled out for special treatment.

Sisyphus and Tantalus being prime

examples of the later. The Titans, also

known as the elder gods, ruled the

earth before the Olympians overthew

them. The ruler of the Titans was

Cronus who was de-throned by his

son Zeus. Most of the Titans fought

with Cronus against Zeus and were

punished by being banished to

Tartarus. !

!Magnificent music!

By Jaeleen M.!

!What's a Aulo?!!! The aulos made of a

single cylinder tube. It looks

like a recorder with holes in

the top and a mouthpiece.

The aulos was made of reed

or bone, but eventually it

was made of wood. The

aulos was used with one or

two reeds, but one was

more common. Through the

ancient Greek period the

aulos contained three to five

holes. The number of holes

raised later. The holes were

used to make the tone. It is

made by a flow of airpushed through the

instrument. The holes were

covered in combinations,

using the fingers, to change

the pitch. The aulos was

played in pairs. The autos

had three or four finger

holes and used double

reeds made of cane that

were held by the pipes by

the sockets. When played in

pairs the pipes were held

one in each hand and

sounded like the two aulos

was just one. It is the most

important of the Greek reed

instruments. A aulos has

two pipes, both with double-

reeds, and 4-5 finger holes

per pipe. !This a aulo and it looks like

a recorder and I though it

was the thing that gets the

snakes in your control. !!That's a Lyra !!

The Lyra originally called

Chelys, because of the turtle

shell used as the sound box.

When Orpheus was killed by

the women, the lyra was

thrown into the sea, and

washed up at Antissa, where

it was found by fishermen.

No one knows how many

strings the original Lyras

had. When time past the

Lyra was a seven stringed

instrument. Then an eight

string came along. Then

there were Lyras with strings

from 9 to 12. The strings

were made of animal guts.

The strings and it can be

tuned up a-e-a or a-d-a.

Whoever is playing the Lyra

does not tap on the strings

but touch them with his nail

from the side or it can be

played with a bow. There

are many kinds of lyras in

Crete, and they come with

different kinds of bows.

Some Lyra has three steelstrings. !

This is a Lyra and to me it

looks like a bull. !!Web sites:

If a runner started earlier thanthe start of the gong, they were eitherwhipped or forced to leave the games. There were several different types of racesin the Olympics. One of them was thestade. The runners sprinted one length ofthe stadium. The second race was thediaulos. Runners sprinted two lengths of thestadium. The longest race was thedolichos, which was the longest race at

Did you know that tons of people watched

gladiators fight each other for entertainment?

The colosseum was finished in AD 80. The

building is measuring 188m by 156m and it is 48

meters tall. In the colosseum there were 80

entrances, 76 numbered gates and 4

unnumbered gates, the 4 were grand entrances. The colosseum was covered in awning, awning

was used to block out the sun. A team of 1000

men were used to put up the awning. The

colosseum is 4 stories high and the lower seats

took place in 264 AD, the battle was in a cattle

market. They chose gladiators by picking 3

unlucky slaves to fight to the death, sort of like

the hunger games. !Fun Facts!• Gladiator games started 300 years before the

colosseum was even built. !• If the games were held every five years it was

because the Romans wanted to honor the

Please say this title in a deep and powerful voice !The Great and Powerful Gladiators!

!!What were gladiators?!The first recorded gladiator fight occurred whenthree pairs of gladiators fought to the death in264 bce. The gladiator games became verypopular. As they got more popular the gamesneeded a better and more comfortable place towatch and fight. Gladiator were usually unfreecriminals. Some gladiator chose to volunteer forthe fame and excitement. A small number ofwealthy men competed in the arena but they didnot live very long. All gladiators swore a Solemnoath "I will endure to be burned, to be bound, tobe beaten, and killed by the sword. Theentertainment took form of combat and fightingand they also had wild animals trying to killthem to. If one of the gladiators felt he wasdefeated he would raise his left arm with onefinger extended, this was a way to beg formercy. The crowd voted for death of for the onebegging for mercy to live, they would signal thiswith thumbs up he lives, thumbs down, off withhis head, the defeated gladiator knelt down tohis knees and then his life was headless.!!The starting point! The men would star with there weapons. Theexited roman crowd was ready for the fight. Both of the men fired it would be there last dayever but for one they live to see the world onemore time. The gladiators start the fight they jab

swords swing axes theres one thing on theremind attack, attack, attack. Both gladiatorsburning in the hot sun sweating, bleedingwaiting for death, suddenly one is trapped in anet the one trapped is fighting back with all hismight then the other one comes up and takeshis life, smelling victory and a little of bloodcrying maybe tears of joy maybe because of theguilt that he just killed someone. Killing becameentertainment in ancient Rome.

The Colosseum!Emperor Vespasian founder of Flavian dynasstarted construction of the colosseum in ad 72It was completed in ad 80 the year afterVespasians death.

This is a photo of a gladiator beingtrapped by his opponent and his opponentis about to die but he will try and fightback.

Greece's gruesome army !Spartans was the most feared cityof its time because it's untouchable

army and military. They wouldrecruit boys at the age of 6 and 7 and would learn to read and writeand not just to throw spears anduse a shield. They were treated withonly what they needed and that was clothes and food. With the

young Spartan reaching 12 histraining increased with morevigorous tasks and harder challenges. 8 years later they havereached the age of 20 they areallowed to join the army (And byallowed I mean forced to) the group

They walk in, the crowd exploding asthey lock in mortal combat. These are the gladiators. The gladiators where romanwarriors that fought to the death in the

coliseum arena. ( see article by AidanMiltner. ) People greatly enjoyed seeing the gladiators fight. They though of it asa sport. A very gruesome, bloody, graphic sport.!! The warriors started fighting mainly in the 1st century BCE to the 2ndcentury CE. Julius Ceaser greatly

enjoyed watching the murderous sport. The gladiators where skilled fighters onlythey where usually slaves. They wherestrong but very heartless.!! There where three types of warriors. First the retarius was a fighter that fought with a net and trident. Hewasn't well armored. All he had was a full

arm guard to deflect blows. Next thesamnite was well armored and had a gladious ( a short sword ) and a largeshield. Last the Thracian was a very light armored fighter with just a helmet, smallshield and dagger. They where All veryskilled fighters though, besides how wellthey where equipped. !! Sometimes if a fighter did not havea opponent, they would let lions or tigersinto the ring so the warriors could strikedown a worse apponent. Or die a worsedeath. Most times one gladiator would dieand the other would stand victorious. But !

sometimes if both the fighters whereexhausted and couldn't fight any longer,or if one fighter is down, he can hold uphis first finger. If the crowd holds a

thumbs up the man will live. If a thumbsdown he will be killed.!! In conclusion the gladiators wherevery brave, ruthless fighters. Andstrength and honor is what made them thefighters they where. !

!Act it up in Rome !!People from rome commonly copied drama fromGreece and the most talented actors of plays fromRome we're most commonly Greek. The first showswere put on at religious festively. Tickets for these playshad no cost. All the Romans of every sort enjoyed theplays. The audience thought the actors were makingwrong and women couldn't sit in the front because peoplethought they would want to run away with a actor. They mostlydid there comedies based on Greek plays. People from Romewho watched the plays liked comedies more then they liked tragedies. People fromrome also made their own ways of performance. They made mime performances.

Theaters in Rome usually didn't have roofs 9000 people could fit in there for actingarena in France. There are. Lots of mosaics that represent the world of theater like theone in Pompeii where acting is going on so is dancing and so is costume changes there

is also a different one with different designs in Naples. Actorswore masks but mimes didn't. In Rome you had to be a man tobe in a roman play unless it was miming. Miming has changedovertime because it used to be that mimes would talk. Theactors would wear feelings masks to show what was happeningin the plays but thats not all the masks represented a charactersthat were men wore brown masks and characters that werewoman wore white ones. Usually behind white makes were

men though because of the rules against woman beingactresses. Masks"did not weigh much but they were steamy

inside. Overtime masks became more detailed and interesting. Normally a rich personwould pay for the play to give it as a gift to his/her fellow citizens. Every town had athing called a forum a forum is an arena. When plays were gong to happen they made aplatform and put it in the arena for the play. In plays back then actors would"play manyroles because of this their costumes were not very elaborate. When people were inaudiences of roman plays and they disliked plays they saw they would say mean thingsto them from the audience and sometimes even threw things!!Unlike coliseums the theaters of the play would be in a semi Cecile shape in conclusionI would want to go to one of these plays but don't worry actors I won't throw anything at

you.

Music Strings Us Together

! Music wasan important part of Ancient Greece

daily life. The Ancient Greekswere music lovers.Music was their life. Athenianchildren were taught music for their

education. They usually learned lyre. A

wooden stringed instrument that theyplayed with a plectrum. Musicians worespecial cheek-straps while they were playing

instruments. Greek men enjoyed drinking parties. Women were banned from theparties unless they were working or

performing. They would sing or dance. Or even both. "Studies in musicology has proof stringing together modern Greek folk song to ancient Greek music. Despite the change from to

refreshing prosody,

the ancient Greekrhythmical formationslive on in modemGreek folk melody. The researches of

ProfessorsThrasyvoulosGeorgiadis andSamuel Baud-Bovy

known to have been made as early as thefirst century A.D., from an ancient Greekinscription. In addition, dance formationrepresentations on vases, figures andterracottas show dancers linked either

hand-on-shoulder or hand-in-hand with the

instrumentalist in the center. "Greek folk song, either diatonic or colorful, like Byzantine music, is monophonic and

are based on a different sequence of intervals than that of the major and minor modes of Western music. As is true of any

monophonic music, the Greek folk song isperformed on the!natural!rather than on theWestern!tempered!scale. Certain songs of northern Epirus, sung in polyphony without any instrumental accompaniment, constitutean exception to the bulk of Greek

monophonic and modal folk songs. A formof "low two-voice singing" is alsoencountered in certain songs fromKarpathos. These songs, where one singsmelody and the other takes up a vocaldrone, is symptomatic of

the!tsabouna!(island bagpipe).!!From the point of rhythm, the Greek folksong is divided into the periodical and freerhythmic types. The periodical ischaracterized by a free flow of various

rhythmic patterns (table songs) while thefree rhythmic is characterized by the regular redo of a given dance tunes.!!

Along with singing and clapping, the Greekpeople have since the early days used everyavailable combination of instruments to

is to popular musicians who play instruments

for open-air village fairs that the Greek owes

his sense of traditional music. Those self-

taught players bore upon themselves theentire weight of Greek musical tradition not

only of the performer, but also of the

instrument maker. More often than not,

the players performed on instruments of

their own form. A good player's

instrument remains under continuousform he adds, removes or alters a spare

part but constantly dig away to improve

the sound of his instrument. Hence, the

 great differences found in the

dimensions, decorations and even shapes

of their instruments; each bearing thepersonal stamp of its player maker.!!Gypsies have always held a special place

in the musician's world. Early on, locals

would not stoop to the profession of

musician, thus instrumental music fell intothe hands of gypsies. As musicians, gypsies

decisive influenced the progress of an

instrument style as well as, in some

instances, the structure of folk melody

Gypsies were also responsible for the

frequent change in a given melody from a

hard core to a melodic style.!

Family tree of honor! What were the god/goddesses back story?!!

Pandora box ( don't worry it was already !opened ) !!

Once up a time, a long time ago, Zeus ordered

Hephaestus to make him a daughter. It was the

first girl made out of clay. Hephaestus made a

beautiful girl and named her Pandora."!!Zeus sent his new daughter, Pandora, down to

earth so that she could marry Epimetheus, who

was a gentle and lonely man."!!Zeus was not being nice. He was his revenge.

Epimetheus and Prometheus were brothers. Zeus

was mad at one of the brothers, Prometheus, for

giving people fire without asking Zeus first. "!!Zeus gave Pandora a little box with a big heavy

lock on it. He made her promise never to open the

box. He gave the key to Pandora’s husband and

told him to never open the box. Zeus was sure

that Epimetheus' curiosity would get him to openthe box, and that either Epimetheus or his brother

would open the box."!!Pandora was very curious. She wanted to see

what was inside the box, but Epimetheus said no.

""You know your father," Epimetheus said, talking

about "Zeus. "He’s a tricky one."!!One day, when Epimetheus was sleeping,

Pandora stole the key and opened the box.!!Out flew every kind of disease and sickness, hate

and envy, and all the horrible things that people

had never experienced before. Pandora slammed

the lid closed, but it was too late. All the bad

things were already out of the box. They flew

away,"!

!

Epimetheus woke up when he heard pandora

crying. “I opened the box and all these ugly things

flew out,” she said. “I tried to catch them, but they

all got out.” Pandora opened the box to show him

it was empty . But the box was not "empty. One

tiny bug flew out before Pandora could slam the

lid shut again."!!“Hello, Pandora,” said the bug. “My name is

Hope.” "Hope flew out into the world, a world that

now had hate, envy, sickness and disease- and

hope.!!!!PANDORA!

was alone, living

in the Underworld.

Hades was NOT

the lord of theunderworld it was

his job to run then

land of the dead.

Hades was a

awesome ruler.

Parts of the

Underworld were

very nice. You

might think Hadeswould be terribly

lonely, surrounded

by the souls of the

dead. But he

wasn't lonely. Not

at all. His brother

Zeus visited, as

did his nephews

Apollo, Hermes,and Ares. Hades

had everything he

needed. He had

an invisible

helmet, which he

liked very much.

Hades has a three

headed dog that

he loves so much. The truth was,

Hades preferred

the Underworld. It

was home!!!!!!

HADES!Hades is the uncle to more than half the Gods.!

!!!!!In ancient Rome, music, song, and dancewere really popular. Music was played inthe theater and performed at parties. It was also played in religious services. Manyof the Roman instruments were from

Greece. Wind instruments were the most common, from wind pipes to horns.!!!!

 APOLLO: THEGREEK GOD OF

MUSIC! Apollo was the sonof Zeus and theTitan Leto, andwas the twinbrother of Artemis.

They were the twinarchery gods.!He was the god of light,

youth, beauty, poetry, and music. He wasoften seen with a golden lyre that he wasplaying. Apollo was usually represented by !

Roman artists as a young man with long  gold hair in a knot above his head, carrying his lyre or bow and arrow.!!!FLUTE!Like a modern flute, ancient roman fluteswere played by blowing across a hole. There was a small bronze

figure decorating themouthpiece on the ancient

ones, unlike modern fluteswhere the mouthpiece isplain. It also had finger holes, yet they weredifferent from the modernflute because they were just

holes. The flute today has buttons that arepushed down, making different notes. Thefinger holes on the ancient flute were morewidely spaced, and there were less of

them. It has been restored by worn away

pieces, probably wrongly, and can't be

played.!!WATER ORGAN!The most complicated instrument used, the

water organ, was invented by a Greek in the

3rd century B.C. The water organ used a

pump to force water into a closed space,

compressing the air inside. A system of

hand operated valves released bursts of

this air in to a set of pipes, making notes or chords like a modern organ.

Unfortunately, even though we know a lot

about Roman music, we will never know

what the water organ actually sounded

like.!!SPIRAL HORN!The spiral horn was a very long horn,

curved into a spiral. It was called a Cornu,

and it was used in the army for signaling.

The cornu was also used at ceremonies.

The mouth of it was like a modern trumpet,as the mouthpiece had the same shape.

The rest of the cornu pretty much formed

a spiral shape, the end of it coming to end

above the player's head. It was quite simple

looking, as it did not have twists and turns

like a modern French horn or tuba.!!BRONZE CYBALS!Bronze cymbals had holes where there

once was a strip of leather or cord for

holding them. The ancient

Romans only played a

little bit of percussion

instruments, whichincluded the sistrum (a

metal rattle mostly used

for religious things) and drums that were

like tambourines. They are very similar to

modern crash cymbals, especially in looks,

except modern cymbals are shiny and gold, and ancient roman cymbals were bronze

and sort of rusty looking.

Romans: Copycats

or not?!!

!

!Roman art came from Etruscan art,

and looks a lot like it. It also looks a

lot like Greek art, as well. Some

people even say that the Romans

conquered

the world,

yet copied

their art

completely

from the

Greeks. In

fact, most

people think

the Romans

are

copycats,

because of

how similar their art is to Greeks,

Etruscans, and even Egyptians. Butbasically, all the Romans were doing

was taking all of these different styles,

mixing them, and adding a little bit of

their own creativity and detail, making

a different kind of art altogether.

That's what Roman art is all about. !!Around 200 BC, the Romans began

conquering Greece. This made a huge

change in their style of art. When the

Roman soldiers went

marching through Greece,

they saw lots of Greek art intemples, crematories, and

other public places. The

Romans thought that the

Greeks were cooler than they

were, so they decided they

wanted some Greek art for

themselves. They brought

home a lot of Greek art they

saw, by either stealing it,

buying it, or, in some cases,

My inquiry questions! Was ancient Roman art

original? What was it

made of?

LINGERING QUESTIONS !I still wonder if anyone will ever clarify the truth; are

ancient Romans copycats? Do they have any art thatis just theirs?

being given it as a present.

They sometimes even brought

home Greek sculptors, often

slaves, to make more art for

them in Rome. This is one of the reasons

why people

think of

Romans as

Greek

copycats- the

Greeks DID

do a lot of

their

paintings. !!Roman art had

lifelike detailsdetails. The Romans

liked to show people's

natural character and people's

oddities. Their paintbrushes were

made from twigs, wood, and

sometimes even hair. For drawing and

writing there were wood and ivory

shaped sticks. Some paint was made

with an egg yolk. Other paints were

made from ground rocks, powdered

plants, and dyes. Red and yellow

were made from ochre a substance

like clay. White was made with chalk.

Green was made from

soil. Blue was glass

and copper mixed.

Black was from soot,

and purple from a

special kind of shell.

These ingredientswere mixed with lime,

milk, gum, or egg, to

make paint. !!As well as scripts and

books, Romans used

sculptures and paintings

called reliefs, that told their

victories in war. The Greeks

did this too, but they used symbols to

tell their stories, while the Romans

showed the real details which were

sometimes gory. These art stories

were like advertisements, they

persuaded and convinced people. They

announced victories, and showed that

Rome was great.
