Some good feelings were generated during last winter's Children's UKK by our introducing a program designed to meet the all-around needs of the children. At this UKK those efforts will be expanded by integrating Anancla Marga!s spiritual philosophy and practices i nto the week's overall activities of rt musico exercise and studyo

For Instance. In studying the pratik the teacher can explain simple concepts while the children are constructing pratlks from various mediums. and perhaps ending with a song

in this way incorporating art and music for understanding a spiritual subject. This is a real opportunity for using our creativity to share and experi ence Ut i l ization , Katha and Kiirtan with His children.

What i would like from YOU Is to come forward with enthusiasm for this program immediately. If you are lnterested In contributing in «Iny way whatsoever' please contact me NOW!

Primarily needed is 6 to 8 supervisors. They will be responsible for a certain age group for the duration of the UKK. Room and Board will be paid by UKK for this participation. Please send name. address, age group desired along with any helpful qualifications and personal sentiments you might have regarding the Children's UKK. AMUFIT._ws ________ __

Never before in the history of AMURT in this sector has the sentiment been so high, the climate so ideal, or the conciousness so expanded to establish a strong and solid base for our relief operations. The roots are just beginning to take hold and our credibility amoung various other disaster relief agencies and governmental officials throughout the country is growing. With the advent of spring the ground is fertile, and now we must continue to nuture and care for the seeds we have planted .

The work we are doing in Guatemala has taught us all a great deal, from the knowledge we have gained in the field work in Guatemala to the fundraising efforts within each unit. A few mistakes occurred. These are a crucial part of our growth too.

The $36,000 which we have collected to date is a definate indication o f the growt h of the sentiment in others to serve. Two years back for our Nicaragua relief efforts less than half this amount was collected (which primarily was contributions from Margiis). A financial breakdown of the various units frundraising efforts has been compiled to this date. Below are some of the units who collected the most money:

1. Denver, Colo. 8. Wichita, Ks. 2. Bloomington, I nd . 9. Washington D.C. 3. Seatt Ie, Wash. 10. Los Angeles, Cal. 4. Menlo Park, C alif . 11. Blacksburg, Va. 5. Ithaca, N.Y. 12. Atlanta, Ga. 6. M issoula , Mont. 13. Louisville, Ky. 7. Minneapolis , Minn . 14. Boulder, Colo.

The Rocky Mountain Region has raLsed the most money with the Pcwific and Millwe!Ot right behindl All the units who have contributed in the drive are

to be greatly thanked. My CIH'fwst appreciation to all of you who have helped our beautiful brothers and sisters in Guatemala.

At this summer's UKK we will have a Guatemala presentation with slides and f irst hand accounts of our work and involvement.

Baba's vision for AMURT I believe is vastly more expansive than any of the disaster relief agencies I have come in contact with, We are pione<?ring a c.Jhole new field of disaster relief, one Hith a spiritual perspective. We need to become self-sufficient, not relying on others to be involve d in relief work. This entails having our OHYl resources and disasti'r plan of action. A large goal perhaps , anri one that needs focus ,

enFT(';Y and i deation to accomplish. A forest comes to my mind where the large pines tower over the forest floor. All the small seedlings trying tc grow at the bottom do not have enough room or light. Moving out from the conges ti on enables our grov .. th to oCcur, y et He should stay close enough to ut.Lli7P the support of others, Let us become pioneers, and farm the frolllipr.

To understand better how He can become self-sufficient and implement Balla's vision for AMURT come to the AMURT U.K.K. seminars in June.

Baba has said at the time of disaster everyone is a member of AMURT, but before another disaster Al'1URT now needs dedicated leaders on all levels of our structure to co-ordinate activities. PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE. SEE YOU AT UKK NAMASKAR 'Ilo.f:'J,

Try, 0 Sadhaka, to know on l y Him, in whom are held the sky, the world, the voidg in whom are ensconced the mind, the five vital forces and the sensory and motor organs. taken from the book BABA, for His 50th birthday

A small child stood In front of Shive idol on a Shivaratri day reciting a mantra In perfect pronunciatIon and accent to the greatest wonder of the learned old priest. He !lev, nost seen the child earlier and on enquiries came to know that he was the four year old son of Shrl taksill;;l Narayan Sarka.p a devout and frequent visitor to the temple. Shrl Lakshmi Narayan Sarkar had not heard his son recite this mantra as he waq yet standing outside talking to some friend. The priest was so amazed and overwhelmed by the chlld's recitatIon that he almost ran to cQngrc"tu]ate the father" HO\'i could this chi ld v,ho even at that age shol-'ved aversion and dislike to the superstitious old traditions of the family. learn this Mantra? He did not remember having ever reciting It. Who could have then taught It to the son?

The priest and the father as well as many a ne i ghbor became deeply interested to find out how this small child who did not otherwise show any extraordinary qual i tie s of religiousness learn this uncommon Mantra. They were greatly amazed as the childis mother Shrimati Abha Rani had often complai ned to her husband and others that this child was perhaps a ueakling and got very frightened of ten in his sleep, She said tha t even when awake he kept on telling her the names of different species of animals w hich he thought were roaming about around him. He would often cling clOSe to his mother and tell her to beware of the multitude of men and animals walking out of his one ear and then he would turn straigh t in the bed and tell her not to worry as all of them were walking back into his other ear. The mother was at times g reat l y perplexed. She could not understand what her son meant. Nor could she see. Often she would think that he was under a hallucination and w ould draw him close to her bosom to save him from the f ri ght which she thought he mu s t have been suffering. It was more or less a regular feature and almost every night the child would wake up, cling close to his mother and keep on poin t i ng out to her a new name of an animal or an insect. Some of these were famil iar names but she could not see anything In t he room far less see them coming out of one of his ears and going back in again to his other ear. She told her husband and her brother one day more or less as a joke that the way this child takes these names it ap pears that the entire universe comes out of his cne ear while his other ear devours the w hole of i t at that very instant . It was a big joke in the family and when the child at the age of four recited the Shivs Mantra none of them thought that what the chi l d saw WI of any more significance than merely s leep talking or repeatln9 an wful dream that he might have seen. Th ey could not make out anything from the unfam11 iClr name$ of human being in various ages and places nor from the names which he described <IS <lnimClls flying bi rdg and small jr,=

J sects. It was to them only the childish pranks of • frightened one who invented these peculiar sounds which did not carry any sense much less Indicating an organism or a thing.

How could a child who was frightened so easily in dreams recite the obscure Shiva Mantra correctly and completely? This was a mystery to solve which the priest was more keen than the parentso The parents were advised in the interest of the safety and the life of the child to make him observe the Shivaratri for at least three years completely and in its minutest details of religious obligations. The priest's wish was acceded thinking that this would perhaps save the child from his frightening dreams and would bestow on him the blessings of God Shiva . From next year onwards the child Prabhata who it was no ticed had particularly changed his deep red complexion t o bright white with the change of his name from Arun to Prabha t at the age of four had to observe Shlvaratrl with complete details up to the age of seven. This however did not solve the mystery of his having learnt the Mantra.

!n order to explain the solutIon clearly It I s necessary to describe some experiences of an Acarya with the brothers Initiated by him into Ananda Marga. In the early of Ananda Marga when the Acarya were very few and hose few a so lad flO )racti 1 experience of the difficlJl les

experience was lImited to trolJbles they had fce i

sv\uytnq in the s thm in v!hlch in Sadhana with his eyes closeda He was naturall

and not able to carry out his practices till he had planation from the !\carYd. The Acarya was equally worried and had to con-suit fJaba$ Once the reason that it v,as a part of his ovm mind which had taken the form of a snake to Impose the wIll of that part of his mind against Sadhana. was knovII1. he vJOuld tackle the problem easily by making that part of his mind come back to its natu'ral placeo In several other cases also It was seen that during the course of Sadhana some potential reactions In one's mind would take a concrete shape and try to force the person to follev; them. It is nothing else but hi s own personality. For Ins tance. there was the case of a young advocate of Gorakhpur who faced a peculiar s i t ua t ion on doing Sadhana. This young man was the on ly son of the richest person of the town and having all that he wished for mere ask i ng had led him astray. A few months Sadhana made him face a peculiar problem . Often in the night he would be awakened by loud pee l s of l augh ter and even when his eyes Were wide open and he wide awake, he would see a person more or less 1 ike himself standing fn front and laughing sarcastically at him. Every time he encountered this double of himself he raised an alarm but before any help reached him the other person disappeared. He raised such an alarm so often in the dead of night . that even though

frightened, everyone in the house made a fool of him. They said it was not possible for anyone to come up to his bedroom on the first floor at a time when all the doors and approaches were securely closed and locked. His earlier experience and alarms had made everyone cautious and watchful 0

Yet very often the other person would confront him with his sarcastic laugh as if taunting him on his doing Sadhana. This again was the case of a part of his mind making an earnest effort to guide him in the direction desired by that particular set of Samskara or part of his mind. Thus the inherited mind always tries in some form or the other to guide every

· .e chi ld Prabhata was being questioned very carefully to ho he learnt the Shiva Mantra. He was an elusive chi ld and to draw from him was not easy. He had no I iking or respect for the ord i nary Sadhu coming and camp i ng near his father 1 s house. An incident connected with him and such Sadhu m ad e i t clear that none of them could have had any hand In teaching him. Once it is said that when 11e was in his f ourth year a group of Sadhu camped near his house. They were considered very devout and there was ost of the t i me some one or the other v i S i t i ng them w i th presents of sweets and other th i ngs. This little child watched them closely and told some one that all the time these Sadhu appear to be sitting in meditation they are only keeping a watch w i th half open eyes on the offer i ngs that their followers brought and placed before them. On being told that this was a sacrilege and that the Sadhu would punish him for saying so, the child in order to judge the strength and courage of the Sadllu or maybe to show the others that they were only frauds , one morning ran away with the sweets that a d i sc i ple had brought from the watch of the half open vigilant eyes of the Sadhu. He ran hard with the sweets and to avo i d the risk of being caught by them went and sat in a dirty service lane where he thought the sadhu would not pursue him. The Sadhu were however too lazy to do anyth i ng - or was i t, they were afraid to pursue this ch i ld? Th i s incident made the ch i ld more bold and his disrespect or aversion for any reI igious activities even more pronounced . His fear of sacrilege was completely rooted out and the awe of the well-fed robust

bodies of Sadhu el iminated. The question of any sadhu having taught h i m the Mantra had to be only ruled out, Yet on q u estioning the child said that he was taught this Mantra by a sadhu .

Th i s three year old chi ld's behavior durin g the nights was always pecul i ar . Apart from the awe producing narration of the room being full of known and unknown o rgan i sms , full of the various planets and stars or of men and animals not heard of by the mother, the chi ld would often describe a journey across the river Ganga to i ts sandy banks on the other side. He would describe a vast sandy stretch to which he

was carried by a strong storm. No one co l d make ou t any meaning of such a dream. The story was even forgotten till it was again revived during the Co urse of enquiry about the Mantra. It was found out that during quite a rH$llJber of nights a stronD storm would be raging in Jamalpur and the cnlld would find himself being carried away by the winds. He wou l d no t awake ti II the storm carried him to the other bank o f the Ganga and placed him on the WIGle :stretch of sands all alone in th.e dead o f night. As the storm slJbsided , a Sadhu with sa f fron crothes, a long, flowlntl beara and a Trishula in his hand!> would appear from almost nowhere before thl:; little child. The Sadhu will urge him to repeat the Shiva Mantra. He would not order the child like the other Sadhus he had met but would persuade him most politely and affectionately to follOW. He would urge "say child say" (Bol Khokha bol) and repeat the Shiva Mantra. The big Sadhu much bigger than those he had seen in flesh and blood In front of his house; urged him to repeat this three times and after this \'Ias done the storm would re-appear. With the re-appearance of the storm the Sadhu would disappear and the lIttle child would be carried back home to his bed. Only this time in bed he would be wide awake and start showing ,signs of worry and would wake up mother to show her the storm that had been raging all around. The repetition of this process every night for a few days annoyed the child very much. He had however in the process learnt the Mantra by heart. One one of such sojourns he was determined to finish off this annoying Sadhu who disturbed him every night for nothing. His fright of Sadhu in general was already finished and he thought that even this Sadhu was as much a coward as the others he had encountered earlier. So one night when he was almost entering the fifth year of his life he decided to take action. He was as usual carried to the bank of the Ganga by the storm that appeared to be raging not only in Jamalpur but all over. The same big Sadhu with his saffron clothes, his long flowing beard and his bj TrishuJa, bigger than the extraordinary height of the Sadhu appeared before him inviting him to Join in the repitlcfon o f the Dhyana Mantra o f Shlva. This enraged the little child, h e snatched the Trishula away from him and with a mighty push thrust it into the bosom of the big Sadhu. The big Sadhu was perhaps only wanting him to do sOp as he cast away his covering in a moment and in front of the little child stood sada Shivs. Before long the storm set In again and the image in front of him re-entered. This was the day of the great change and it somehow coincid with the change in his name from Arun

the rising sun to Prabhata RalnJana - the sun that illuminates everything; that gives colour to everythlf\9.

1 . Unit R egi strat ion R eport ing: over 60 unit s must be checked for proper registration procedure, the paying of necessary fees, and proper funct ioning . Though each unit is primar ily respons ib l e for it s elf, and though it s first resource is its reg ional office, the s ectorial office is int er ested and monitors the majvt' needs and developments of the unit . Each month a summary of every unit ' s activity is prepared for Dadaj i ' s inspect ion . R eporting back to unit s OCcurs through our monthly mailing s # the Crimson Dawn, and individual correspondence . This task could keep two full-t ime workers busy for s ix days a week . At present , we have

one half-time worker meeting the Various respons ib ilit ies of this post . He is doing except ionally well .

2 ,. T eachers · C ert ification Program : the implementation, administrat ion, and devel

opment of this progra'm, on which we ve report ed so frequently in unit mailings

and in the Cr imson Dawn, is succeeding through the dedicated work of former as

well as pres ent DhaPracar workers . We will be developing a program in which

highly experienced and compet ent persons will s erve as trainers for our cert ified

t eacher s , who will be abl e to cons tantly upgrade their skills with proper guidance . A t pres ent , this program is managed b y one half-t ime worker .

3 . Correspondence : we bas ical ly have two types of correspondence : general letters of inquiry about Ananda Marga and special reque s t s both from within and without the organiz ation. A form lett er, after it went through revision and review, was pr int ed to send to the many general inquir ies oming into the off ice . Spec ific inquiri e s demanding more particular attention are allswered by all four of us , depending on what program is involved .

4 . Retreat s : UKK and RDS, b oth o f whi ch occur b iannually, mus t b e planned in every detail, from facilit i e s . food, cost estimates , s chedule, nd program, to toys for children, spices for s pe cial foods , and spare t ires for road-worthy clunkers .

A s in the pa st , so now, UKI( requires a ful l-t i me roord inator ; RDS takes less t ime b ut requires the same skills as UKK .

5 . Monthly Commique s : program reports , reque s t s , guide l i ne s , f e edback, and all other types of informat ion are s ent out in unit ma i l ing s , circulars to reg ional personnel, and t he Cr imson . T he Dharma Pracar Se cre tary does t h is task .

6 . Pub l i cat ions R eview: the many pub l i ca t ions that are created for immediate and long-range use must be reviewed for ideologica l and grammat ical accuracy . T he Pres ident , Publ icat ions S e cr etary, and Dharma Pracar S e cretary j o intly work on this proj ect . Proposed books , brochures , pamphlets , art icles , news r eleases , news l e t t ers, and circulars from all departments need overview. T hi s is a timeconsuming but often i nterest ing j ob .

7 . A ddres s L i s t : this is a very unas suming task that r equir es a tremendous amount of at tent ion and pat i ence . The t a s k is diff icult b e cause Marg iis are moving around the sector one month faster than our address up-dater S s ab il ity to catch up . We have b e en belatedly told by many Marg i i s that they nevertheless appreciate the progr es s ive l it erature they final ly r e c e ive . The motto for this quas i program iSb "Forward$ p leas e . " The job has driven one full person into a half • • • •

8 . F inance : accurate records mus t be kept of the major financial act ivity in several areas on a monthly basis : postage , pr int ing, R aba l s photos » registrat ion and mai l ing fees, off ice supplies and equipment , and publ ications .

9 . SLT C : an 18 hour tra ining program g iven to all trainees at the Sector ial Local TraIning C enter has b een drawn up after much consultat ion. A 2 0 page syllabus

containing the pract ical details of basic pracar stateg ies has b een compos ed, and weekly s e s s ions provide the setting for introducing and practicing these t echniques . The four major areas of instruction include language skill s , organiz ational s tructure and respons ib ilit ies , leadership training, and accurate report ing . This is one of the most r ewarding aspects of our work ---to pass on informat ion to those who are eager to learn, to practice, and to ass imilate the experience of many others .

New Pracar A id s : a great deal of work goes into the composit ion of accurate, ess ential, and pres entab le materials that explain the g oa l s , practices , and activities of A nanda Marga . Such materials include s l ide shows , introductory bookl e t s , and an introductory book of the scope of The Path of B l i s s , which is now out of pr int . Several different per sons ar e coibuting-their talents , experience , love; and energy to "these tasks , and, though they ar e not in the Dharma Pracar Department as such, they are some of its mo st valuab le memb ers .

YWSA : this program is budding very succes sfully due to the effor t s of s everal dedicated women, one of whom, a worker in this department , devotes half of her t ime to t he pub l ishing of its newsletter and the organiz ing of retreat s . O ther r e lat ed programs t o YHSA are Society Building and YMSA . neither of which are even r epres ent ed in this department at this time . ""It'""should make us all happy that, in this cas e, the ladies are truly f irs t .

12 . Expans ion: this area i s a t op prior ity of the Dharma Pracar Department , and it is the area that , so far , at l east, has received the l east amount of attent ion . Expans ion has two dimens ions : internal and ext ernaL T he internal d imens ion of expans ion is a very delicate mat t er, b ecause it is based upon frank. open, and ( if they ar e to endur e ) cordial r elat ionships among a l l personnel, all Margii s , o f the s ector . Eff iciency without love is non-pr oduct ive, just a s i s J ove without eff iciency . W ithout personal nurture, our organizat ion b ecomes dry and tedious . The nurture of our personal relationships, though they might appear to b e intang ib le and therefore non-manag eab le, creates a delicate t i s sue that can b e given b ody and kept healthy t'hrough satya, honesty in love . We have attempted t o b eg in our expans ion f ir s t of all b y att ending to the many internal needs of our organiZ at ion ( time for an adequat e home l ife f or married worker s , encour-agement for s e lf-expans ion through courses and seminar s , f itt ing pers onal preferences with aSS igned work, l eadership training and communication skills for acaryas , r egular informat ion and repor t ing to reg ional personnel, et c . ) . W ithout this cent er , this focus on conf idence, love, and the meeting of needs on a personal level, further expansion is impos s ib le . To dat e . we have spent our energy on estab l ishing this foundation, which is no mean achi evement . What we have to show on a tangib l e l evel to demonst ate this level of growth is an orderly office, with delegat ed respons ib i l it ies and an atmosphere of cooperation and eff iciency, a cordial spiri t among the diff erent programs within Sector ial Off ice, and a b eginning at enhanced communication among acaryas and all worker s ,
