The Woman in Black
For my analysis I decided to analyse the women in black; directed by James
Watkins and was released in 2012. The sequence of eents and the !ortrayal of
the whole conce!t of the "lm !ortray clear codes and conentions of the horror
#enre. The o!enin# sequence of the "lm "rst shows a shot of three small #irls
!layin# with dolls who then suddenly look u! blank faced almost as if they were
bein# hy!notised$ the score here dee!ens soundin# more sinister to build more
tension for the audience$ makin# them wonder what will ha!!en ne%t. The score
#radually builds becomin# louder; in sync the three youn# #irls ste! u! onto the
led#e and &um! at once out of the window. 'trai#ht away there is a scream$ to
#ie the idea that !eo!le hae become aware of the situation and react$ this
hel!ed to aoid showin# the #ruesome scene of a children dyin#.
(ditin# done in the trailer only added more a)ect to the scene
as it was slowed down in some scenes to hel! brin# out and
em!hasise an im!ortant or dramatic !art$ in this case when
the #irls &um!ed out of the window.
The director uses die#etic and non*die#etic sounds
to enhance and the dramatic a)ects and
understandin# of the slow*motion editin#. This
would be im!ortant as the o!enin# sequence does not
#ie away much about the moie; therefore the sound had to
be a!!ro!riate accordin# to the horror #enre.
The scene is set in a lar#e +ictorian nursery room
with di)erent ornaments and ob&ects !laced around
the room; this hel!ed to show the era the "lm is set in.
,ise*en*scene included 1-00s settin# and costumes of
characters; wearin# lon# !lain and dull coloured dresses.
In addition to this$ there is also dull$ #rey and dark
li#htin# which hel!s to create the scene set in a small
town/illa#e in the countryside.
In the o!enin# sequenced there was a ariety of
di)erent shots and camera an#les some of which were;
wide shots$ lon# shots$ trackin# shots$ e%treme close*
u!s and ooms. The di)erent shots were used at
di)erent !oints in the sequence. The e%treme close*u!s
were used to !resent emotion on the characters faces
and also to create silent tension for the audience when
the children are show !retend !layin# with the dolls
and also when they be#in to stand u!. The trackin# and
ooms hi#hli#hted the key !arts of a scene for e%am!le
when the #irls walk toward the window; this indicates
to the audience that somethin# bad was #oin# to

ha!!en$ whereas$ the wide and lon# shots hel!ed to #ie the audience a better
understandin# of the location/set.
