Breakfast at Tiffany’s Opening Sequence

.

In this screen shot of the opening sequence of Breakfast at Tiffany’s we get a wide shot of New York City to set the scene of the film. As well as this, we see a low shot which emphasises the height of the building and the prestige atmosphere of New York, this low shot highlights that New York is a high status city and that people are miniscule compared to the city.

The repetition of low angle shots in the opening sequence highlights again that New York is grand. This shot of the main character looking up at Tiffany’s creates awe about the shop which stresses that it will be the main feature of the film. We also get a bit of information and an impression of the character through her clothing and style, she has her hair in a be-hive bun which was the fashion around the time and also she has multiple strings of pearl around her neck giving connotations of wealth and status

The mid-shot shown in this screenshot is used to show the reflection of the main character. We see her expression as she looks into the tiffany’s shop which gives the audience the impression that the main character has a fascination about the shop which also exaggerates the connotations of wealth. Additionally, in the reflection we can see her reaction whilst looking into the shop which creates a connection and relationship between the shop and her. We liked this shot in the opening sequence as the reflection showed the emotion and the location- we wish to replicate this kind of shot in our own opening title sequence.

We get a mid-shot of the main character, Audrey Hepburn, which shows her personality and style through the clothing she is wearing. We get a first clear shot of her face which gives the audience a clearer insight of the character. However, she is wearing large sunglasses which form an enigma about the character.

LINK TO COURSEWORK:

This opening sequence of Breakfast at Tiffany’s has given us inspiration for our opening sequence because the genre of romance is one that we would like to replicate as both of us connect to this type of genre over others.

The location of the city of New York inspired us to replicate some of the shots in London as we have easy access to main tourist attractions.
