.MODERN-DAY CINDERELLAS(ALTERNATIVE TITLE: NO NOISE IN FRANKFURT AFTER TEN)
On the rare occasionswe gathertogether
as the clock strikes tenwe remove our shoes
dance in our stocking feetchanting to soft, hushed music
or huddle round a tablemurmuring jokes:
unruly football fanssneaking passes of laughterpast our neighbours.
.

.THIRD WORLD WIFE AND HER EUROPEAN HUSBAND
What I saw in his eyeswas a beachand I literally was drowning.
What he seesin my eyesis pain suffered in silence
like the night that my best friend Reawas murderedafter a gang rape
meant to cleanse the family honour…
but he thinkshe sees valleys, lakes and hills.

.

THE MASTER OF CREATION
Never needed to leavewhen he had farming.
Never needed toreadwhen he was farming.
Now he gets an allowancethat’s a pittanceand their two non-thatched roomshave but one window
and there’s never been sunreaching the windowduring the winter months.
Now he’s forced to receiveassimilation coursesand his wife and his children, with the ladies, also attendassimilation courses.
But the afternoonhe suddenly saw a tablein the five letters gatheredon a sheet of white paperthat happened to be lying on a table;
the afternoonwhen he made that connectionhe left the room the master of creation.
Pero la tardeque de repente pudo ver una mesaen las cuatro letras reunidassobre una hoja de papel marfilque por casualidad yacía sobre la mesa;

FRONTWARDS
A man cycles down the lane, a little boylodged between his bodyand the steering bar.
Leaning forward slightlythe man cradles his sonever so gently
while the little boy, unwittinglyturns his back on love.
It will be years, decades most probably, before it is his turnto hold love ever so gently
frontwards
between his sturdy hands.
.
HACIA ADELANTE

AT A RECITAL OF BERLIOZ SONGS BY MARTHA SENN
I
In the centre of sexa peal of laughterrules its sinuous hills;its plainswhere soaring birds gliderevive and soothe us.
The orgasm of lifeand the platitudes of deathsink into the unknown, into another glory, not our own.
How comfortingare wordswith lifebesieged by song.
II
Morse codeof love,musictapson our souls
washing the world,
wrestling our painonto a beach of soundslike dying whaleslaunched one more timeinto life’s swirl.
Love flies its gullsabove our unspent joys, which bristle, sigh, and then recedeonce againInto silence.
To Rafael Vega., who treated me to the concert
EN UN RECITAL DE MARTHA SENN CON CANCIONES DE BERLIOZ
I
