NEWS & INFORMATION

A hearty thank you to the wonderful, generous people of Encanto. Your donations have provided some much needed items for our food, hygiene, clothing, and bus card bank. Thank you! As the weather changes to cooler temps, we will provide food bags, bus passes, shoes and clothes (mostly slacks, T-shirts, and shorts).

Our target needs for June are soup (chicken noodle is a favorite), shampoo, socks, and water. Thank you friends and members of Encanto for your caring attitude and donations so that we can serve our call to minister to those in need.

ECC Volunteers at ICM On Thursday, May 16, seven Encantonians went to ICM Food & Clothing Bank to volunteer for the morning. We had a wonderful time! We filled food boxes, helped distribute them (they give out about 150 a day!), and sorted clothes for the free boutique. We’ve decided to make it a monthly outing (every third Thursday) so if you are free, join us at 8:15 AM in the ECC parking lot to carpool to nearby ICM. If you have questions please contact John H. or Cindy W. or email: [email protected].

It is time to begin collecting for our August back-to-school drive. This year our Deacons have chosen the Glendale Elementary School District Teacher Resource Room as our beneficiary. The GESD Teacher Resource Room is a place where elementary school teachers can go to pick up materials for class projects and lessons. Things like paper towel & toilet paper tubes, shoe boxes, check registers, fabric scraps, craft items, potato chip cans, children’s books, yarn, any other items a creative teacher might use. So don’t toss that paper towel tube, bring it to church!

ECC Empties the Landfills Well, we’re not completely emptying them but we like to do our part. Take a look at the table below and remind yourself of the many ways you can help ECC and our planet.

I hope you celebrated your mother yesterday. If she is still living, please tell me that you planned something very

special which you could enjoy doing together. If she is no longer around, I am just as hopeful that you celebrated her

memory. Wonderful times remembered can also be a great cause for celebration. Besides, I doubt that any of our relatives would choose to

have us suffer endlessly under the unbearable weight of a ceaseless list of burdens. I think the departed would rather be remembered fondly

and with great affection.

Kathy and I could share an endless stream of stories about all the fun we have had through the years planning special times to honor

our mothers. Ella and my mother really enjoyed each other’s company, so having them together for an afternoon or evening really didn’t pose

any special problems. They accepted one another in the level ground of varied opinions, so each person felt a sense of mutual respect for the

other. There was no feeling of bitterness or resentment on the part of either lady. These were two women who had met the goals they had set

for themselves in life, and they were quite content to celebrate their individual victories as they met each struggle encountered throughout their

lives.

Mother and Dad took me to see my first play when I was twelve years old, and they had no idea what they were starting. The play was

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, and the place was Muny Opera in St. Louis. This would be the first of many “enchanted evenings”

we spent there. Later that same summer (1955), we enjoyed a “Rodgers and Hammerstein” concert in the same venue. Following this

experience, I was hooked for a lifetime of enjoyment. I was privileged to see an endless parade of stars recreate the roles they had played on

Broadway. It was an experience rich in memories, and one I shall never forget. I was very fortunate to have parents who allowed me to

develop a passion which has endured throughout a lifetime of wonderful encounters shared with a huge list of thoughtful and loving friends.

These times together have expanded the world for all of us. Mother spent countless hours enjoying the theatre with me. She became almost as

big a fan as I was. She would often say, “Don’t take anyone else to see this one, because I want to see it, too.” I always got her a ticket for

anything she wanted to see. Mother was always ready to see another musical. She really loved a score rich in melody.

Most of you have been reading my column long enough to know that I have always really enjoyed music. I am one of those people

who goes to a movie and listens to the music while I am keeping pace with the dialogue at the same time. Just to give you one example, Victor

Young’s score for Michael Todd’s production of Around the World in 80 Days is one of my favorite soundtrack albums ever. As soon as I saw

the movie, I rushed out to buy the soundtrack. I have dozens of movie scores in my collection.

I have heard two concerts that really impressed me in recent days. One was a concert by the Acacia Elementary School Choir. These

kids were 4th through 6th graders, and they were just plain wonderful! If I said anything less, I would be selling these kids short, and that would

be unfair. These students were 60 strong and certainly long on talent. It was a joy to watch the kids throw themselves so completely into the

music. They were having fun, and passing that sense of fun along to the audience. It was a great prelude to Mother’s Day.

On Mother’s Day, our celebration ended on an especially high note. Those who live here have become acquainted with a couple of

fellows who enjoy singing together. Their names are Roger and Dale. These are two guys who really know who to put it together musically.

They both have deep, rich, and sonorous voices that blend perfectly. Listening to them perform together is a matter of sheer pleasure. We are

so fortunate that they come to entertain us on a regular basis. Their concert was the perfect way to end a very special day.

Enjoy your June and celebrating your Dad. Next month is our time to celebrate with a Big Bang (and there is no theory involved

here)!
