Homoeopathic Medical System: An Overview

Homeopathic medicines are safe to use as they rarely cause side-effects. This means when used appropriately under the guidance of a qualified homeopath they can be taken by people of all ages, including babies, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. (British Homeopathic Association) Homeopathy is a medical system invented in 1796AD by a medical-genius, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Based over his doctrine of Similia Similibus Curentur, i.e. “like cures like”- a claim that a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people would cure similar symptoms in sick people. This could be understood as, the homeopathy is a natural form of medicine used by over 200 million people worldwide to treat both acute and chronic conditions. The holistic nature of homeopathy means each person is treated as a unique individual and their body, mind, spirit and emotions are all considered in the management and prevention of disease. Taking all these factors into account a homeopath will select the most appropriate medicine based on the individual’s specific symptoms and personal level of health to stimulate their own healing ability. Entrance Criteria in BHMS Course Qualifying Age: He/she has attained or will attain the age of 17 years but not crossed age of 25 years. Educational Qualification: Candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with- English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology etc. subjects. Candidates must have passed in all subjects individually. Provided that a general category candidate must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks (45% marks for Scheduled Case and Scheduled Tribes candidates) in aggregate in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English. Selection Process: Entrance Examinations.

Course Duration In Indian Universities, the degree program of Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery- BHMS is a 5.5 year’s long, full time, regular degree course; which is further segregated into 05 different academic learning sub-sections:

1. 1st BHMS (duration-1 year) 2. 2nd BHMS (duration-1 year) 3. 3rd BHMS (duration-1 year) 4. 4th BHMS (duration-1.5 years) 5. Compulsory Internship (duration-1 year) etc.

Course of Study The B.H.M.S Degree Course comprises of a course of study (full time) consisting of curriculum and syllabi, prescribed by the Central Council of Homoeopathy, New Delhi, and provided in the regulations of The West Bengal University of Health Sciences, spread over a period of 5½ years. Each medical student has to undergo compulsory rotatory internship of one-year duration after passing the final Degree Examination as prescribed in the Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery- BHMS Regulations 1983 of the Central Council of Homoeopathy. Usually the compulsory medical internship or houseman ship shall be undertaken at the Hospitals attached to the homoeopathic medical colleges or universities only.

5. Medical Internship

Note: Usually college hours get notified from time to time. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th year Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery-BHMS, students shall attend the outdoor and indoor clinical classes.

Exit-Profiles of BHMS Graduated Doctors

After successful completion of A 5.5 year’s BHMS degree program from an Indian university, the BHMS Graduate may further move into two broader directions, i.e. either joins higher study, or join profession after getting a practitioner license from state and/or central council of homoeopathy. Registration in State or Central Homoeopathic Board is necessary by a BHMS graduate. Post-BHMS: Higher Study Pathway: For gaining more knowledge and enhance their professional richness through academic upgradation by joining a MD (Homoeopathy) or other associated masters programs like, Master in Hospital

Management, Master in Public Health, Master in Clinical Psychology, Master in Food and Nutrition etc. A sizable number of postgraduate diploma and certificate course are also being offered by different institutions/ colleges and universities in India with different super-specializations for BHMS graduates. Post-BHMS: Employment Pathway: There are multiple job avenues available in India for a BHMS graduates. Some of them are listed below: Homoeopathic Medical Officer Homoeopathic Social Advisor Homoeopathic Doctor Homoeopathic Researcher Hospital Manager etc.

Post-BHMS Salary Packages (For Fresher) Government Sectors: In Government sector, BHMS graduates are being recruited in different profiles. Below mentioned pay scales are being applicable (as per 6th pay commission) these days:

1. Junior Research Fellow: Tenure track research positions (for 03 years, regular). 2. Senior Research Fellow: Tenure track research positions (for 03 years, regular). 3. Medical Officer (State Government Cadres): Gazetted and Permanent position with Salary

Pay Grade 9300-34800, with Grade Pay 4600 (Group-B); however, few state governments are also offering Salary Pay Grade 15600-39100, with Grade Pay 5400 (Group-A).

4. Medical Officer (Central Government Cadres): Gazetted and Permanent position with Salary Pay Grade 15600-39100, with Grade Pay 5400 (Group-A).

5. Scientist-I: Permanent position- Central Government: Salary 15600-39100, with Grade Pay 5400 (Group-A) etc.

Private Sectors: These days a fresh BHMS graduate is being offered salary packages in private sectors ranging INR 15,000 per month to INR 45,000 per month- depending on the nature and location of the private establishments. (As on January 2017)
