MUSIC IN WORSHIP… what does that mean?
OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, I have pondered this very question. At times, I want music, music, music. At times I want silence, silence, silence. What gives?
IN 2008, I STARTED WORKING with the adult choir at Congregation Albert, a Reform Jewish Congregation off of Louisiana and Montgomery. It began as a one-time gig for the High Holy Days. What it turned into was a ten-year introduction into the origins of my Christian faith. I wish I could say, “It’s a long story, let’s have coffee and I’ll tell you all about it.” But, the story isn’t finished and the details aren’t quite solid. But here are a couple of things I’ve learned.
THE WORDS OF THE TORAH, the first five books of our Old Testament attributed to Moses, are not spoken in worship. They are chanted. The words are held so reverently that human hands do not touch them. A yad,
a special pointer usually made of silver or covered with fabric, that allows the chanter to follow the text in the same way I would use my finger to follow along in a complicated section of a textbook or to teach a child to read. So, I learned from my Jewish friends that God’s word is so wonderful, that I should do something special with it. I should sing it and hold it with care.
THE SECOND THING I learned is the origin of our
Communion. We know the story of the Last Supper. As a child it seemed kind of strange - bread at the end of the meal? It’s something we have as an appetizer or part of the meal. At the end of the first service I attended at the end of Shabbat on a Saturday evening, we sang. We shared a loaf of Challah bread and a cup of wine to show our thanks for the gifts of the earth. We passed around a jar of strong spices to remind us of the seasons of our lives. We held our hands up before candles to see the blood flow through our fingers to remind us of the life we’ve been given. And… we sang joyously! It made me think that perhaps the Last Supper wasn’t as somber as I had learned as a child. Maybe the puzzlement of the Disciples centered on the fact that they were celebrating and didn’t quite get what Jesus was saying.
AND NOW I COME TO THE SILENCE.
SO, HERE ARE THE DISCIPLES, singing boisterously, after all Passover is a celebration, while Jesus was talking and one of them says, “Excuse me? What was that you said?” And Jesus probably had to say it again, “This is my body. This is my blood.” Sometimes it’s in the stillness we hear God speak the loudest.
SO, I LOVE BOTH MUSIC AND SILENCE. In fact, to quote a friend, “Silence is a musical event.” In the next few weeks, we begin the season of Lent. May you experience both music and silence.

FROM THE CHURCH COUNCIL Any voting member of the Congregation who is interested in serving in any of the three appointed Congregation Officer positions (Secretary, Treasurer, or Financial Secretary), please notify the Church Office or any of the Council Members (list on the back of this
newsletter). The Council will consider those expressing interest in these positions and make selections/appointments for each at the next Council Meeting on February 20th.
FROM THE SACRISTY CARE TEAM On Sunday, January 28, we went back to using the communion practice of having individual portions of wafers (regular and gluten-free) and individual cups of wine and grape juice. The Saturday night service will continue to use intinction with either flour tortillas or pita bread (with gluten-free wafers available) and wine and grape juice. Due to complications observed with the corn tortillas, the sacristy team and Worship, Music, and Arts committee are making this change.

February i s . . .
AMERICAN HEART MONTH By Gayle Carleton, MA, BSN, RN
THE FIRST AMERICAN HEART MONTH, proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, took place in 1964. At that time, more than half of the deaths in the U.S.A. were caused by cardiovascular disease and it remains to be the global leading cause of death with more than 17.3 million deaths each year. That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030. ON AVERAGE, SOMEONE DIES of Cardiovascular Disease every 40 seconds in the U.S. Also on average, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds, with someone dying from stroke every 4 minutes. NEW MEXICO HAS THE 45TH HIGHEST death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. It is the second highest killer in New Mexico, with stroke being the fifth highest killer in New Mexico. YOU CAN MAKE HEALTHY CHANGES to decrease the risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and
preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.
TO LOWER YOUR RISK:
Watch your weight
Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke
Control your cholesterol and blood pressure
If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation
Get active and eat healthy
For more information go to: www.heart.org

Martin Luther
Of Prayer What Power Prayer hath.
O how great and upright and godly Christian’s prayer is! How powerful
with God; that a poor human creature should speak with God’s high majesty in heaven, and not be affrighted, but, on the contrary, knoweth that God smileth upon him for Christ’s sake, his dearly beloved Son.
… let us pray in heart, and also with our lips; for prayer, by our loving God, supporteth the world; otherwise, without prayer, it would stand in a far more lamentable state.
… Prayer is a strong wall, and a fort of the church; it is a godly Christian’s weapon, which no man knoweth nor findeth, but only he who hath the spirit of grace and of prayer.
