Mr. R. Bernatchez of Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited requested testwork on

the recovery of feldspar, quartz and mica from a pegmatite sample. The sample was

contained in tvo drums and was received on January 22, 1981 at Lakefield. A combined

flowsheet of screening, magnetic separation and flotation was to be used to produce

the three products.

On February 5, 1981, Mr. R. Bernatchez and Mr. G.E. Wood of Steep Rock

Iron Mines Limited visited Lakefield to discuss and direct the testwork.

The size range of the head sample was about 95 1* minus 20 mesh and about

73 1o retained on 100 mesh.

2. Testing Flowsheet

The ore sample as received was minus 8 inches. The complete testing flowsheet

included: 3 stages of crushing, l stage of screening, 2 stages of magnetic separation

and 2 stages of flotation.

The ore was fed to a Jaw Crusher with a discharge opening of 2 inches. The

minus 2 inch material was then passed through a cone crusher with a 1/U inch opening

and a roll crusher.

The discharge materials of the roll crusher was separated on a 20 mesh screen.

The oversize contained mainly muscovite. The size range of the mica was from 20 mesh to

about l inch, most of the mica flakes were in the range of 1/8" to 1/V. The mica was

considered to be of marketable quality.

The 20 mesh undersize was fed to a High Intensity Dry Magnetic Separator.

The non-magnetic fraction was again treated at a higher flux density. The non-magentic

material was further processed by flotation.

A Denver D-l flotation cell was used in this investigation. The sample

was pulped to about 30 'fa solids. The pH of the pulp was lowered to about 2 .k by adding

concentrated sulphuric acid. Cyanamid reagents Aero Promoter 825 and 801 (300 g/t

and 50 g/t respectively) were used as collector for the ferromagnesian minerals and

50 g/t Dowfroth 250 was added as frother. After removing the ferromagnesian minerals,

the pulp was conditioned with 1+7^0 g/t hydroflouric acid (pulp pH 1.8) for five

minutes. About 250 g/t Armac C of Armak Chemicals was used to float the feldspar

from quartz.

4. Discussion and Recommendations

Using three stages of crushing and screening, a clean muscovite fraction

could be removed. In this investigation only one stage of screening was used. The

total weight of mica obtained about 3 # and the flakes were in the size range of 1/8

inch to l inch.

High intensity magnetic separation reduced the iron content of the samples

from 0.45 lo to 0.15 1* Fe203, but the weight lost to the magnetic fraction was almost

20 55 of the total weight. Better conditions may exist by which less quartz and

feldspar would be removed with the magnetics.

The separation of feldspar and quartz by flotation was not optimized.

Although the grade of feldspar was acceptable, the quartz fraction still contained some

feldspar.

Summary - Continued

' k. Discussion and Recommendations - Cont'd

Based on the above discussions, further investigations should be

conducted in the following manner:

1) Several stages pf screening should be inserted in the crushing flowsheet

to recover larger mica flakes.

2) Magnetic separation tests should be carried out in which the rotor speed -

flux density relationship is optimized.

3) Flotation of the ferromagnesian minerals should be tested before magnetic

separation to evaluate its effectiveness in lowering the iron content.

H) To establish the optimum conditions for the quartz-feldspar separation.

5) To examine the effect of different size distributions on the quality of

the end products.

SAMPLE PREPARATION

Two composite samples, representing the West and East portion of the

deposits, were received at Lakefield. Each sample vas reduced to about 2 inches

with a Jav Crusher. About 7/8 of the sample vas riffled out and stored. The

remaining 1/8 sample was crushed to minus 20 mesh with a cone crusher and a roll

crusher. The mica flakes were retained in the 20 mesh oversize. Head samples were

prepared for assay. About fifteen 2 kilogram charges were prepared from each

composite for testwork.

Conditions:

To remove ferromagnesian minerals and separation of feldspar-quartz.

De-mineralized vater was used in this flotation test. pH of pulp was brought to about 2. k with concentrated sulphuric acid. Ferromagnesian minerals were removed by R825 and R801. pH of pulp was further brought down to 1.8. Hydroflouric acid was used to depress quartz. Feldspar was floated with Armac C.
