When organizations and their employees describe leadership, we often imagine dynamic men and women who function in the role of the executive in large and powerful organization. Recently more attention has been given to the significance of managers at all levels to provide the basis of modern leadership concepts. The reason for this attitude is in part because leadership is everyone’s business and responsibility. We also realize that leadership is often a very complex subject. But, with the right tools in the hands of the right leader we can use our knowledge to improve effectiveness and planning for our organization’s future. The ACHE offers you these tools.

Your board of the South Carolina Chapter exemplifies the ideals of good leadership. With the Chapter’s needs at the forefront they lead the organization in an effective way to assure our members have services to meet their needs as executives?

As we end 2016 and begin our 2017 Board season, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our 2016 Regent, Sue Shugart, for her leadership and commitment, as well as all of our Board members, Committee members, LPC leaders, and volunteers for continuing to make the SC ACHE Chapter the organization it is today. I also want to acknowledge our new Regent for 2017, Mr. Adam Allen for what I know will be an outstanding degree of support as he serves in his new role.

Annually, the board meets to develop a strategic plan to assure the mission and vision of the organization is meeting our needs as health care executives and leaders within our state. We meet to continue this focus and to leverage the abilities, skills, and knowledge of your board members. The planning and development session is conducted early in the calendar year so that we can set the stage for the upcoming year.

To determine where we need to go as an organization, it is important that we reflect to where we’ve been this past year. Again this year, we made significant progress in many areas of our strategic plan as well as making great strides to improve the services of those we serve. The South Carolina Chapter continues to make significant efforts in improving organizational development by integrating skilled volunteers in leadership roles to aide in operations, governance, and support for our membership. The South Carolina Chapter has a strong history of integrating successful leaders and by doing so we continue to build on our previous successes.

Through the efforts and achievements of our board and our membership, our Chapter recently received ACHE’s 2017 Award of Chapter Merit. The Award of Merit was previously won in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. Our Chapter also received ACHE’s 2017 Award of Sustained Performance. The Chapter won this award in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

These awards and positive attributes are a direct reflection on you, our SC ACHE membership. I encourage you to become actively involved in a leadership role within the SC ACHE. If you have an interest, please contact me at [email protected] to discuss how your interests might align with the Chapter’s needs. Your active engagement and participation in our Chapter is a great way to expand your professional network, sharpen your skillset, and give back to the healthcare industry, your organizations, and your peers.

Respectfully,Donald M. Peace, Ph.D., FACHE

To highlight some of our successes and describe some of the salient successes that are identified through our annual leadership conference that helps us to define our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for this chapter. Some strengths noted this year include:

Continued from page 3.

+ We provided quarterly newsletters to our membership,

+ We established our Early Careerist Committee,

+ We established a process that provides an opportunity for each committee chair to provide an article to the Chapter newsletter. This is done at least once per year to update membership on the activities of that Committee and encourage member participation,

+ We analyzed Chapter membership and identified greatest opportunities for growth,

+ We assure the development and delivery of a Board of Governor’s exam preparation course to be delivered to our membership. There are plans to provide this to the Georgia Chapter as well at no or minimal costs,

+ We developed potential sponsors for ACHE events,

+ We enhanced collaboration with the SC Hospital Association and Palmetto Hospital Trust,

+ We developed strong relationships with our Health Education Network (HEN). Our HEN expanded this year to include Winthrop University and Anderson University,

+ We sought opportunities taken to maximize Senior Leadership engagement,

+ We increased the breadth and depth of our board,

+ We enhanced marketing strategies through the use of LinkedIn, Alumni news, Chapter newsletters, and membership blast emails, and

+ We also increased the number of persons receiving ACHE Recognition Awards (three this year).

12 2016 ANNUAL REpORT CONNECT | LEARN | SUCCEED | LEAD

The South Carolina Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (SC ACHE) embraces diversity within the healthcare management field and recognizes that priority as both an ethical and business imperative. The SC ACHE Chapter values diversity and initiatives that promote diversity because they can improve the quality of the organization’s workforce. The SC ACHE Chapter also values and actively promotes diversity in its leaders and members because diverse participation can serve as a catalyst for improved decision making, increased productivity, and a competitive advantage.

The SC ACHE Chapter understands that diversity in healthcare is no longer just about morality, ethics, social justice, or representation. The definition has evolved and today, diversity in healthcare includes the multiple societal factors that affect disparities in care, including environmental and other social determinants.

Notwithstanding these issues, the SC ACHE Chapter will support efforts in our State to affect health disparities by embracing and promoting the three core elements as proposed in the 2012 National Call to Action to Eliminate Health Care Disparitiesi:

+ The collection and use of race, ethnicity and language preference data

+ Comprehensive Cultural Competency training among health system leaders and staff

+ Strategic efforts to increase diversity in health leadership and governance that reflect the population of South Carolina

WiTHiN THE CHApTER ORgANizATiON:+ Support the efforts of the South Carolina Hospital

Association to engage senior professional and member leaders of both organizations in a comprehensive dialogue regarding racial and ethnic disparities in health care processes and outcomes among South Carolina’s hospitals and health systems.

+ The SC ACHE Nominating Committee will identify and promulgate chapter leadership who understand the complexity, opportunities, and challenges of diversity in healthcare; and who, when possible, represent the diversity of South Carolina. The Committee will further broaden its representation by encouraging membership beyond the traditional hospital sector.

+ The Chapter will conduct an annual self-assessment of its diversity and inclusion practices and will propose new practices and programs, as appropriate.

WiTHiN THE HEALTHCARE mANAgEmENT FiELD:+ Host an annual SC ACHE educational offering on

the topic of diversity, cultural competence, and equity (e.g. Panel Discussion Template #71 “Equity of Care”).

+ Publish at least one chapter newsletter article on the topic(s) of diversity, cultural competence, and equity.

+ Develop relationships with the National Association of Health Service Executives, the National Forum of Latino Healthcare Executives, and/or other industry affinity groups to identify opportunities for collaboration.
