The miracles of science™

Page 2: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

Take a look at Singapore now

Page 3: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

It is a miracle that Singapore has become the way it is now. Reaching our 50th year of independence, we are one of the most prosperous countries in Asia. In 2012, Singapore ranked 3rd in the list of the world’s

busiest seaports by cargo tonnage1. Singapore

has also been named the best country to do

business for the last 7 years2.

Things were not all that great when the journey first started…

On the 16th of September 1963, Singapore formally merged with Malaya, North Borneo and Sarawak to form Malaysia. It was thought that the merger would benefit the economy by creating a common trade market, offering more job opportunities and support new industries. However, the merger did not last long as political differences within the parliament arose. Singapore was hence, kicked out of Malaysia.

On the 9th of August 1965, the Parliament of Singapore passed the Republic of Singapore Independence Act, establishing the island as an independent and sovereign republic.

The new state became the Republic of Singapore with Yusof bin Ishak appointed as its first President.

A Future UncertainSingapore’s gain of Independence

Page 5: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

However, Singapore’s future was bleak and filled with uncertainties with this sudden gain of independence.

5

The emotional announcement of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was vividly captured on TV. It was a moment to be remembered by many, as the declaration signified the birth of a new nation - and television’s potency as a medium.

Many problems such as lack of basic necessities like portable consumable water begun to surface. People in Singapore had poor living conditions as many of them were living in squatters, further highlighting Singapore’s low chances of survival.

On top of that, a huge fire broke out in Bukit Ho Swee destroying the squatter settlement and leaving 16,000 people homeless.

6

The 1961 Bukit Ho Swee fire proved to be a pivotal moment in the development of modern Singapore.1

The flats constructed to house the fire victims constituted the first large-scale building project undertaken by the HDB 2.

Page 7: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

Before Singapore’s Independence, the Economic Development Board was set up in 1961 to formulate and implement economic strategies, which mainly focused on developing the manufacturing sector in Singapore. Industrial estates were set up, and foreign investment was attracted to the country.

The government also invested heavily in an education system that adopted English as the main language and emphasized practical training to develop a competent workforce well suited for the industry.

Singapore’s national security was also at risk. With very limited defensive capability, threats from the Indonesia military were aimed towards Singapore. Hence, Singapore began to seek international recognition of its independence.

The new state joined the United Nations on the 21st of September 1965 and founded the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 8th of August 1967 together with four other South-East Asian countries. Then, National Service was introduced in 1967 where full bodied Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are required to serve and protect the country.

The Beginning of a MiracleHow DuPont started in Singapore

Page 9: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

DuPont was also one of the many global multinational corporations to establish their presence in Singapore. Today, the company operates in over 90 countries worldwide.

DuPont Singapore employs over 500 people at its manufacturing facilities in Jurong Island and Tuas, as well as its marketing and administrative office at HarbourFront Tower.

9

During the period of 1970s, trading was easy and free from restrictions due to the transparency of the trading port.

The Government also encouraged foreign companies to set up their business in Singapore, as it provides a platform for business and trade connections with countries, worldwide.

DuPont believed in Singapore and became the first tenant of Jurong Island. It is currently home to more than 94 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies, with a total gross investment of about $34 billion.

Jurong Island is the largest outlying island of Singapore. It was created when the 7 offshore islands: Pulau Pesek, Pulau Sakra, Pulau Seraya, Pulau Merlimau, Pulau Ayer Chawan, Pulau Ayer Merbau and Pulau Terumbu Pesek were joined together by the reclamation of land around these islands. The purpose was to provide space to house more chemical companies.

10

Believing in SingaporeThe Story of Jurong Island

Page 11: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

To realise this vision, we needed companies to believe in us and our perseverance paid off, with some of the world’s largest chemical companies, such as DuPont, ExxonMobil, Eastman, Mitsui Chemicals, Sumitomo and Vopak, agreeing to invest millions of dollars on an island which was very much still under water. These companies came in on our assurance and our track record that we would soon reclaim the plots of land and lay the network of infrastructure. We exceeded their expectations.

When standing at the SkyPark, 200 metres off the ground, the glass that protects you from falling off is an innovation of DuPont.

By adhering two or more layers of glass together, clear DuPont Sentryglas® interlayer helps the glass withstand wind barrier and residual load-bearing capability.

Combined with low-iron glass, DuPont SentryGlas® creates an extra-clear, durable windscreen at the Singapore Sands SkyPark. This innovation allows you to have a clearer view of the city skyline.

The strength and stiffness of weather-durable DuPont Sentryglas® allowed for the use of thinner glass in fins, which makes it a suitable choice for this project.

Together with London-based engineers Atelier One developed the current spectacular, complex geometry shell roofs of laminated glass incorporatingDuPont Butacite® PVB that give a 1,800 seat theatre and an equally large concert hall two distinct identities1.

The Esplanade uses DuPont Butacite® and Butacite® G Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) Interlayers which unlike the typical glass, that shatters in extreme impact, this interlayer remains intact.

DuPont Butacite® and Butacite® G Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) Interlayers retain dangerous shards in case of glass breakage.

These interlayers are flexible and resilient, it helps to absorb the impact. It is often used in laminated architectural and automotive glass.

Not only does the laminated glass roofs give people a 360° degree view of the outside from within, it will keep them away from the hot and humid weather of Singapore.

When Roy J. Plunkett first discovered the Teflon® brand formula in 1938, he had no

idea how many uses it would ultimately have. Till today DuPont is still exploring the uses of

Teflon®. The possibilities are endless.

Teflon® non-stick coating has been your partner in the kitchen for 50 years. Teflon®

non-stick coating systems last 7 times longer than ceramic or silicone coatings pans.

DuPont ensured durability by providing a non-stick coating that is not only abrasion and scratch resistant, but

also helps protect against adhesion and corrosion.

The Singaporean Tom.Tom wakes up in the morning and brushes his teeth. The filaments used in

the tooth brush very likely come from DuPont Tynex® monofilament. DuPont supplies the majority of filament for tooth brushes in the world.

When Tom’s wife cooks his breakfast she is likely to be using a non-stick cooking pan that has DuPont non-stick Teflon® materials on them. With Teflon®, we use less oil in cooking, make cleaning easier and more efficient. The food may also be prepared on the kitchen top made of DuPont Corian® solid surface materials. The sandwich bread and cheese for breakfast contain DuPont enzymes and emulsifiers. His yogurt contains DuPont dairy cultures that

provide an acidic taste and pectin to distribute the fruit evenly. The salad prepared for his lunch has dressing that uses DuPont stabilizers

and antioxidants for perfect texture and sustained freshness. The cellophane film she uses to wrap and protect his salad is also a DuPont

product that was produced since 1923.

When Tom drives his Japanese-made car to work, there are many car components made with DuPont engineering polymers like Zytel® (intake

manifolds), Vespel® (power windows) and Delrin® (powder window regulators)

Touching LivesDuPont contributions to Singapore you may not be aware of

You may not see DuPont logo as often as you do with other commercial products. You will be amazed you actually use DuPont products much more often than you do others on a daily basis. Let’s follow an ordinary S’porean for a day to illustrate how DuPont makes lives safer, happier and healthier.

Page 27: An Extraordinary Journey of Miracles

and other thermoplastics. These polymers are substitutes for metal reducing the weight of the car and thus saving on fuel consumption. Zytel® and Vespel® products are made in Singapore in our Jurong Island and Tuas West plants respectively. The refrigerant for his air-conditioner may be DuPont Opteon® which has lower global warning potential (GWP).

On the road a fire truck passes Tom to attend to an emergency. The firemen personnel inside the fire trucks are likely to be wearing life saving flame retardant clothing made with DuPont Nomex® materials. As Tom enters his newly painted office, the Japanese paint used had DuPont Ti-Pure® pigments and Telfon® that give the whiteness, brightness and opacity, and easy to clean quality. The widow glass panels on Tom office may have DuPont Sentryglas® glass to make the glass safer and stronger and reduce construction cost.

Throughout the day, Tom uses his computer, printers and mobile telephone for his work. These machines have DuPont engineering polymers like Zytel® (computer connectors) and Delrin® (printer parts) in them. If Tom uses a popular US brand of printer, there is a high chance that the ink used is made by DuPont at our Tuas South plant.

After work, Tom plays with his son flying a Tyvek® kite at Marina Barrage before attending a concert at Esplanade where the glass is made from SentryGlas®, enjoys a drink at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and SkyPark where

SentryGlas® is also used. The bread, cheese and ice cream that Tom has is tested by regulatory bodies using DuPont Qualicon®

Tom retires to get a good night sleep. He rests his head on a pillow that contains Invista Darcon® anti-mite and anti-bacterial microfill that was built on DuPont technology.

The next day Tom flies Singapore Airlines A380 on a business trip. DuPont provides lightweight composite materials Nomex® and Kevlar® honeycomb to A380 to reduce airplane fuel consumption and reduce aviation emission. Its engines contain DuPont Vespel® parts made in Tuas West plant.

So Tom, a typical Singaporean gets through the day and is touched by, uses and or comes into contact with DuPont materials, innovations and products without even knowing it. DuPont’s contributions to Singaporeans are silent but equally significant and make lives safer, healthier and happier for everyone.
