TheColorofDrinking

StudyDescriptionTheColorofDrinkingexaminedtheimpactthatundergraduatestudentsofcolorexperiencefromUW–Madison’salcoholculture.PurposeThepurposeofthisstudyistounderstandhowstudents—particularlymarginalizedandunderrepresentedstudentsofcolor—perceiveandexperiencealcoholcultureatapredominately-whiteuniversity.DeploymentDatesThesurveydeployedNovember20,2017andclosedJanuary1,2018.TargetPopulationsThesurveywasdeployedtoacensusofundergraduatestudentsofcolor(4,736)andasamplingofwhitestudents(2,000).Forthepurposesofthisstudy,astudentofcolorwasdefinedassomeonewhodidnotidentifysolelyaswhite.MethodsTwosurveysweredevelopedandadministeredinQualtricstothetargetpopulations.Allparticipantswhocompletedthesurveysreceiveda$5Amazongiftcard.CompletionRates1,195(25.2%)undergraduatestudentsofcolorand333(16.7%)whiteundergraduatestudentsrespondedtothesurvey. MicroaggressionsForthisstudy,microaggressionsweredefinedas“briefandcommonplacedailyverbal,behavioral,orenvironmentalindignities,whetherintentionalorunintentional,thatcommunicatehostile,derogatory,ornegativeracialslightsandinsultstowardpeopleofcolor(Sueetal,2007).”IRBTheresearchstudywasapprovedbytheUW–MadisonInstitutionalReviewBoard.
