Pak-China FriendshipPakistan and China gained independence in 1947 and 1949 respec-tively; and since 1951 their diplomatic ties have moved from strength to strength. Both countries are all-weather friends and have formed a relation which is deep-rooted, multi-dimensional and sustainable in all ways.
During this 7-decade old friendship, both countries have been strategic partners and have supported each other on national and international matters. Pakistan took a stand in the United Nations for China; Pakistan helped China in reestablishing its ties with Western countries including the United States; and, seeing its strategic importance, Pakistan also served as a link to vest China’s influence in the Muslim World.
China, on the other hand, has always backed Pakistan on regional and international levels at all forums. China has supported Pakistan economically, technologically and strategically. China paved a road to success for Pakistan by helping build the Karakoram Highway (Pakistan-China Friendship Road); China provided defense-related support to Pakistan; China helped Pakistan build Chasma and Karachi Nuclear Power Plants; China provided unconditional support to Pakistan on the expansion of Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG), Kashmir Issue, and full memberships of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Most recently, China-Pakistan collaboration spans over a wider canvas than ever before, ushering in the strategically-important project “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)” which will help strengthen the regional position of both countries.

“One Belt – One Road” is an initiative that was started by the Chinese imperial dynasties more than 2,000 years ago to establish a trade routes’ network that would link China to Central Asia and the Arab World. That network of routes was called the Silk Road, a name derived from China’s most important export product – Silk. This route helped establish the economy of the whole region, and China dominated as the leading economy of the world for almost a millennium. Now that road is called the Old Silk Road.
In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping, proposed a new plan to reinforce the millennia old Silk Road and gave this a new form that would create the world’s largest platform for economic cooperation including policy, trade, financing, social and cultural cooperation.
One Belt – One Road (OBOR) is a network of trade routes - in the form of railways, roads, pipelines, and utility grids - that would link China and Central Asia, West Asia, and parts of South Asia. OBOR mainly consists of two components, one being the Silk Road Economic Belt, and the other being 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The effort has started taking practical shape, and more than 70 countries, with a combined GDP of $21 trillion, have expressed interest in the OBOR action plan. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship project that China has started in Pakistan, and it is worth more than $62 billion.

China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship project under One Belt – One Road (OBOR) initiative, and a game-changer for Pakistan. So far, it is worth more than $62 billion, and it would help Pakistan to become economical-ly self-sufficient. As the tip of the iceberg, CPEC will create 700,000 jobs in Pakistan, and millions more will benefit from this project.
These figures include the construction of new dams, new power projects, new roads, revamping of the Karakoram Highway, motorways, railways, training centers, Special Economic Zones across Pakistan, Gwadar Port, Gwadar Airport and much more.
In a broader perspective, CPEC is the express link between Western China, Middle East, Europe and Africa. CPEC is an important part of China's future vision and it is the southern corridor of Silk Road Project. Similarly, it matches the ambitions of Pakistan’s vision 2025 and it has placed us on the journey to prosperity.

Gwadar Port
Significant Characteristics:
Gwadar Port is a game-changer for the region, and especially Pakistan. It is a part of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and once fully operational, it will save a distance of 11,000km for China, whose cargo ships are heavily dependent on the Arabian Gulf, and pass through the Straits of Malacca and travel a distance of 16,000km and reach China in 2-3 month. Gwadar would cut that and save the time by 2/3rd. The port has been handed over to the China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPHC), and it was officially inaugurated in November 2016.
To transform this small town of Gwadar into an international port city, massive development projects are undergoing there. Local and interna-tional investors are part of the projects.
