An Epistle from Paul: Are We Authentic CHRISTIANS? Charles Spurgeon had a close preacher friend by the name of Newman Hall. This same friend had written a book entitled Come to Jesus. Another preacher published an article in which he ridiculed Hall. Now Newman Hall bore the ridicule for a bit, but when the article gained popularity something had to be done. Hall sat down and wrote a letter of protest. His answer was full of retaliatory invectives that outdid anything in the article which attacked him. Before mailing this letter, Hall took it to Spurgeon for his opinion. Spurgeon carefully read over Hall’s letter of retaliation. Handing it back to Hall, Spurgeon asserted that it was an excellent letter and that the writer of the article deserved every bit of it. “But,” he added, “It just lacks one thing.” After a pause Spurgeon continued, “Underneath your signature you ought to write the words, ‘Author of Come to Jesus.’” These two preacher friends looked at each other for a few moments. Then Newman Hall tore the letter to shreds! Let me use the above to illustrate another important Biblical principle. The name CHRISTIAN literally means: “a disciple or learner of Christ…; belonging to Christ alone…” What was Spurgeon’s point when he said, “It just lacks one thing. Underneath your signature you ought to write the words, ‘Author of Come to Jesus’”? That was Spurgeon’s way of saying, “Do you really think this is the Christian thing to do?” Should you and I not be thinking and asking ourselves this question all the time? Should we not be authentic or genuine Christians every moment we live?! In His Marvelous Love, Paul The Church of Christ 725 US 35 West P.O. An Epistle from Paul:

Are We Authentic CHRISTIANS? – Charles Spurgeon had a close preacher friend by the name of Newman Hall. This same friend had written a book entitled Come to Jesus.

Another preacher published an article in which he ridiculed Hall. Now Newman Hall

bore the ridicule for a bit, but when the article gained popularity something had to be done.

“But,” he added, “It just lacks one thing.” After a pause Spurgeon continued, “Underneath your signature you ought to write the words, ‘Author of Come to Jesus.’”

These two preacher friends looked at each other for a few moments.
