I have been talking to friends who are in significant drought stricken areas and the recent rains have brought the land back to life. Dams have filled, crops are growing, lambs are going to be born soon. New life is springing forth. There is a fragile hope within their hearts once more. The message of Easter is a great reminder of hope and new life. On Good Friday the altars of churches are stripped bare, the mood is sombre and deeply reflective. All hope seems lost. I often imagine the immense sense of despair for Jesus’ family and his disciples. They saw him die and accompanied him to his burial place. They went home grieving and questioning. An Easter message from our Chaplain …

Dear St James Families, Many within the College community have had a challenging few months and may be feeling hopeless. But God has always had a rescue plan, a good loving plan in place for his people who felt lost then and feel lost now. Our Easter narrative moves onwards to Sunday, 3 days later. “For this is how God loved the world; that he gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” -John 3:16-17 “But he was pierced for our rebellion and crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.” -Isaiah 53:5 “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last.” -Job 19:25 Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in the books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.” -Martin Luther “Easter was when Hope in person surprised the whole world by coming forward from the future into the present.” -N. T. Wright A safe and blessed Easter season to you all. Peace and Grace, Ingeburg Dell’Antonio Chaplain

From our Principal…

Dear Families,

May your Easter long weekend be a blessing, as we remember what Christ has done for us. As our Chaplain, Ingeburg reminds us – to fix our eyes upon Jesus. Over this Easter it is my prayer that you are able to stop and remember the true meaning of Easter. I hope that all our students are able to have a refreshing break and change in routine and come back refreshed and ready to jump into Term 2 with vigour. God bless Luke Schoff Principal

From the Head of Secondary School …

Term 1 has not been without its challenges and I can’t believe we are closing the term with a sense of uncertainty reminiscent of twelve months ago. It is during these difficult times that our ‘X factor’, that ‘thing’ that makes us different from the rest becomes really clear. It is our sense of community, the way we – staff, families and students - hold each other up and support one another when we need it most. It is because of this that we also get to enjoy the awesome moments together, in exactly the same manner – holding each other up and supporting one another. This became so clear to me when I was looking at photos from our Year 12 Aquatics/Science camp who have just enjoyed four days at 1770. For staff on this camp the deadlines don’t stop in their absence, they become earlier and the days away become longer. For students, there is work to be completed for other subjects prior to leaving, commitments to be juggled and time away from their families also. These trips would not be enjoyed as they are if there wasn’t a mutual respect and understanding between staff and students, one that comes from being part of such a wonderful community.

Thank you to everyone for all you do, it does not go unnoticed and is dearly appreciated.

‘Fast Five’ with Alec Ferguson Year 12 How long have you been a member of the St James Community? Two Terms

Tell me about a moment that you often reflect on from your time at St James Lutheran College: The first school camp I went on I really got to know the grade and was treated really well.

What has been your favourite subject? Aquatics and Sport and Recreation. Where will I find Alec five years from now? I don't really know but I hope I'm doing good.

What will you miss most from St James when you graduate in November? I'll miss being in a good school.

God Bless,

Julie Higgins Head of Secondary

From the Head of Primary School …

Dear Families,

Here we are at the last week of term and when we reflect on the term – it was full of exciting learning opportunities and time to connect with each other, our teachers and families. Trips to Mon Repo, Gala days, Cross Country, in-class visits from park rangers, Smart Start super heroes and a whole lot more!

Parent Teacher Interviews. Thankyou for supporting these over the past few weeks – we see these as an important opportunity to connect with you and to plan some goals for your child moving forward. These are time to identify your child’s strengths and areas of focus for next term.

Inclusion. Our philosophy here at St James is for all children to receive the support or adjustments to curriculum or environment that they need to assist them on their learning journey within the learning environment. Some children require support with their interactions with others, some with extra reading, the structure of their writing, extra practice of their mental computations – all this is done with the greatest respect for your child so they don’t feel different or singled out. This support changes with the needs of the child and results are not always evident immediately. Children learn at different speeds and in different styles. We do contact you as soon as we think there is something to be investigated and always look for your support in either seeking outside professional input or home support or to work with us within school.

Devices. A common theme across Parent Teacher Interviews was the use of devices – how long is too long? What should my child be playing? How do I monitor this? We need to be very present with what our children are playing or participating in on devices. We strongly recommend you regularly check your child’s device. Be watchful of Apps being hidden behind other ones, look at the use of chat rooms, Anime and games that have an ‘M’ rating. Within games, setting up groups to play against needs to be known children so you can monitor that there are not strangers interacting with your child. You can use an App to shut down your child’s device after a period of time, to monitor when they are in sites they shouldn’t be etc. There is lots of information about what parents can do on a myriad of places – simply google and you will see – it makes for interesting reading, a little unsettling but it is better to be safe than sorry. If your child becomes defensive or aggressive, then there is a high chance they are hiding something!

Thankyou. Our thanks to you for the beautiful way our children come to school each day, in their uniforms, with hats. Drink bottles are getting forgotten but a quick teacher email and you are on to making sure the next day your child has what they need – thankyou. On behalf of Primary, we wish you safe and happy travels over the holidays, a chance to re-charge and to share some precious family time together. We look forward to seeing you all next term and I know that the Primary teachers have started to plan exciting, creative and innovative units of work!

God’s blessings and Happy Easter !

From our Kindergarten …

The Kindergarten team would like to wish all our wonderful families a happy Easter. Thank you all for the wonderful connections we have made during the first term. As I reflect, I can see how settled the children have become within our environment. The Kindergarten will continue to operate during the Easter school holidays and only close on the public holidays, Good Friday – 2nd April and Easter Monday – 5th April. If you are going to keep your child home over the school holidays, please make contact via phone or email to let staff know you will be away, as this assists with staffing over the break. Early next term we will be having parent teacher meetings with families, a note will be sent home next week. Please ensure you are checking Xplor notifications as important messages will be shared using this method.

Blessings, Jackie Heath Kindergarten Service Leader

Cross Country Carnival…

Well done to all the students that competed at the recent St James Cross County Carnival. With a large amount of rain falling in the days leading up to the event, the course had many boggy patchers for the students to avoid (or to plough straight through!). Many races were hotly contested right up until the closing stages and all students showed great determination to finish in their best possible time. Congratulations to the students listed below for finishing in the top 3 of their age group. Students eligible to represent St James at the upcoming Hervey Bay District Cross Country event on the 4th of May will be notified this week. Our winning house for Cross Country 2021 is McKenzie!

How do I order Winter Uniforms? Until such times as Government restrictions are fully lifted our shop remains closed. However, we have order

forms are available online https://www.stjameslc.qld.edu.au/community/uniform or alternatively you can

request a printed one from the office. We anticipate 1 – 2 day turn around times. In most instances we will

send home with the child.

I don’t know what size to get, what do I do? All uniform order forms have sizing charts on the back of them. We encourage families to be proactive

with sizing your child based on these. If you are unsure of sizing please put down what size your child

wears currently, even if it is not our uniforms. This gives staff a starting point. We will offer exchanges on

wrong sizing, however items must come back unwashed and in original packaging.

How do I pay? Please note, payment is required with the order. You can send the order in with cash or alternatively

complete the bottom section with credit card details. We do not store credit card details, and all forms

are returned to parents.

Caring for your Uniforms We want your uniform looking better for longer. On all our garments, you will find care instructions; please

follow these instructions to ensure our quality garments always look their best.

• To protect the colour of your garment we recommend you wash it inside out. This will also reduce pilling

on your garment.

• A hot iron will damage garments. It can cause pilling, shrinkage and even colour loss.

• Never hang washing out in direct sunlight.

• Avoid using the dryer if possible. If you do need to use the dryer we recommend a cool setting – a dryer

may shrink and damage the fibres in your garments.

• Wash garments before they are worn (for color fastness and comfort)

• Pre-treat any stains before washing (machine washing and drying without pre-treating may set stains in

permanently).

• Do not put undiluted washing powder directly onto your washing as spot bleaching can occur (dissolve

the powder into the water before adding garments.

• Always fasten all zips, buttons and studs prior to washing so that they don’t damage the garments or get

caught during the wash cycle.
