Our Sermon Series “Dare to Dance Again” runs through Sunday, May 20th .

As Easter people, we are called to dance our dances of freedom for all the world to see. Dances of

hope. Dances of justice. Dances of love. During this season, post-resurrection stories point to the

joy of living in the beloved community and extending that fellowship through our witness as we

dare to dance and “sing out strong!”

THE INN PROJECT ALWAYS NEEDS PERSONAL HYGIENE SUPPLIES!

It has been brought to our attention that The Inn Project shelter at First UMC constantly needs personal hygiene supplies. If

you would like to donate items, there is a bin for them in the church office or give them to Barb Reuter, Julie Jenkins or

Mary Jo Floyd. (Do not place them in the bin on the patio.)

The Wired Word

This week's Wired Word discusses two studies, both of which are important to growing our church and recognizing that our words are powerful tools to either bring comfort and joy to someone, or great hurt and insult. First Topic: A recent study found that 51 percent of U.S. churchgoers didn't know what the term "Great Commission" referred to, which is Matthew 28:18-20. Since those verses, which quote Jesus, have been important in impelling Christians in the work of missions and evangelism, the lack of familiarity with the Great Commission among churchgoers today may be worrisome to those who want to see the Christian faith spread.

This news gives us an opportunity not only to acquaint -- or reacquaint -- ourselves with the Great Commission, but also to consider its applicability to us personally and the church generally today. So that will be the topic of this installment of The Wired Word. Second Topic: This article examines the growing problem of meanness in our society, particularly in the context of social media. Social scientists who study human behavior on the Internet are learning that under the right conditions, most people can make hurtful comments online that they would be less inclined to make in person. Those who make nasty remarks tend to provoke more of the same from other people. The good news is that people can also learn to tone down their own unkind speech, which can positively influence others to do the same.

May God bless us in the scriptures this week. Rev. Matt

“M-M-Good Worship” In our last update on the worship team, we told you about our subscription to an on-line resource called “The Worship Design Studio” that has been guiding us as we learn more about worship and work better as a team in preparing for, and carrying out our worship. The Worship Design Studio talks about worship that is “M-M-Good”–meaningful and memora-ble. It has meaning when the faith story connects with our life stories and it is memorable when the way we tell those sto-ries sticks with us beyond the time and place of worship. Worship that is meaningful and memorable is worship that shapes our lives outside of worship as well and draws people into a closer relationship with God.

So we are beginning to collect “M-M-Good” worship stories from the congregation because remembering these meaningful and memorable moments helps the worship team find out what kinds of experiences “stick with us.” During the next four weeks, will you recall a worship moment that was unforgettable to you and describe it to us? Here are the ways you can do that:

Share it in a post on the church’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/DesertSkiesUMC/

E-mail it to [email protected]

Tell it to a worship team member after church (Rev. Candace, Rev. Matt, Doc Shawn, Raymond Ryder, Scott Jones, Mary Ellen Dawson, Susan Haynes or Pat Walker)

Call and tell it in a voicemail at 749-0521. Shalom, Rev. Candace

Desert Southwest Conference Annual Mission Project The Desert Southwest Annual Conference is asking all churches to support three projects that our bishop has selected. The success of these mission ministries depends on the generosity of people like you and me. The selected projects are:

ARIZONA JUSTICE FOR OUR NEIGHBERS (AZ JFON) This is a legal clinic welcoming immigrants by providing affordable, high-quality legal services, as well as engaging in advocacy for immigrant rights, offering education to communities of faith and the public about these issues.

THE INN PROJECT Located in Tucson at First UMC, it provides temporary housing to people seeking asylum in the United States. In collaboration with ICE, it helps to get children and their accompanying adult(s) out of detention centers to a friendly and safe environment as they await arrangements from their family in the U. S. .

TONGAN RELIEF AIDE POST CYCLONE DAMAGE In February of 2018, Tonga was devastated by the worst storm in 60 years. They experienced winds of more than 2301 m/h flattening buildings and bringing down power lines. Cyclone Gita ravaged Tonga and our Tongan churches are seeking all of our support to help their friends and families back home.

WE ARE EXTENDING THE BLESSING OPPORTUNITY TO ALL OF THE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF DESERT SKIES UMC TO CONTRIBUTE A SMALL AMOUNT EACH SUNDAY IN A PEW ENVELOPE TO PLACE IN THE OFFERING OR A ONE-TIME CHECK FROM NOW UNTIL JUNE 3RD. (Please indicate “Conference Mission” on the pew envelope and the memo line of the check.) The offerings from each church will be added to the mission offerings given during Conference worship services.

call Glenda Burdick at 760-5520.

ning to go out of town, or If you can not do the watering anymore, please let me know. Thank you, Janet Johns-907-3351

Endowment Committee Did you know that the Desert Skies United Methodist Foundation (a 501c(3) religious charity) invests and manages the

a new fund in memory of Emmitt Warner?
