LEARNING IS FUN with Margo and Tony Mullane ^ m

fm=*m

It takes courage to give up a secure career with a reliable company and decide to start a new one, but that is what Tony Mullane did. Of course this would never have happened if he did not have the complete co-operation and shared enthusiasm of his lovely wife Margo. They are partners in this new business - Futurekids - which is proving highly successful.

Tony and Margo were both born in Cork, and although they lived less than a hundred yards from each other, it was only when they worked in the same office, that they met. Margo never wanted to leave Cork, she loved her hometown dearly, but the day she met Tony sealed her fate. He was an ambitious young man who knew he would get a better job in Dublin so off he went - not however, without becoming engaged to the love of his life. They were married in 1974, and soon afterwards bought a house in Idrone, where they lived until five years ago when they moved to Templeroan with their two sons, Tommy and James.

Margo always had a great interest in children, so much so, that she trained with The Irish Playgroup Association and opened her own Playgroup in Idrone. They were happy years and she often remembers the small boys and girls who are now vibrant teenagers. She was also involved as a member and secretary of the ISPCC.

During the years, Tony was doing extremely well in his job with The Norwich Union Insurance Company. In Management, he had successfully completed all the A.C.I.I. exams. It was a busy life, yet behind the rush and bustle, Tony secretly nurtured a secret love. It was, and still is, his fascination for computers. He remembers his first en-counter with a computer, an enormous machine which took up the space of two rooms. "It is hard to imagine", he says,

"that a small P.C. today can do vast amounts more than that huge, early model which was greeted with such enthusiasm and held in such awe".

It was the tightening up of costs within the company that gave Tony the opportunity to branch out and do something on his own. Computers were really his life. His job in Management gave him plenty of scope for preparing projects , problem-solving and his skills in general management were rewarding enough - but, the fact was -he loved computers - not insurance. Work was, of necessity, a 12 hour day, leaving home at 7 a.m. and returning at 7 p.m. The thought of making a new start was attractive, and financially, an opportunity not to be missed. It was a time for change, but a lot of soul searching and discussion took place before a family decision was agreed -"take a chance". Tony was free - but what next?

For a while they took it easy, reflecting and waiting for something to happen - and suddenly it did. An advertise-ment appeared in the newspaper offering a franchise in a computer-based learning system for children - an American idea known as Futurekids which is now "being used in over 1200 locations throughout the world. Margo and Tony investigated and knew it was for them. Training courses followed and now they have opened their own Centre in Rathfamham. The whole system is based on Fun Learning and is open to all ages from 5 years to 16 years. Two classes are already being held twice a week (after school hours) in St. Colmcille's School, and two in Loreto National School, Rathfamham. Classes are small, four to six per group, and emphasis is on sharing and co-operative learn-ing and are run personally by Margo and Tony. Four to seven year olds are trained in using computer technology and software, specially designed for their age group -among other things - exploring colours, shapes and puzzles or experimenting with words and letters and each child receives their own coloured print-outs. They love it and it is tremendous fun. This learning process progresses to various other subjects according to age and progress is exception-ally fast. As Tony and Margo say, "the sky's the limit". Classes for children are also held in Rathfamham Shopping Centre and Summer Camps will be held there during the summer months.

RE: CARELESS PARKING Dear Editor,

My elderly parents have the misfortune to live in Idrone Park. I say this because I have the occasion to travel up and down Idrone at about 1.30 p.m. most week days past your school. I have repeatedly been delayed for about fifteen minutes due to the absolute chaos in children being collected by their parents in cars, and the cars being parked everywhere, on both sides of the road all the way from the church, all the way down. The most frightening thing is, God forbid, if there is a need for an Ambulance or Fire Engine, I can assure you the people would be dead or burned alive before help could get to them. There is no way any car can get up or down the road due to the cars being parked on the sides and even in an emergency there is no way any vehicle could get out even going on the green into Idrone Park or any-where in that vicinity. Are you going to wait until there is a death before you do something?

Please act now as there must be something that can be done. You should inform the parents of the extreme potential dangers their thoughtlessness is creating.

1 feel so strongly about this as 1 am sure other people do about where to park, especially as it is a narrow road.

On behalf of myself and my three children I wish to thank the people of Knocklyon for their non-stop concern, support and good will on the recent death of my husband. In particular, my neighbours and friends in Knocklyon Avenue. I am totally over-whelmed by their comforting words, deeds and "shoulders to cry on". We would not have survived without them. Thank You.

m I.C.A. N E W S • On Wednesday 27th April last the Knocklyon Guild of the I.C.A. visited DSil Eireann following an invitation by Minister Eithne Fitzgerald. The members were met by Eithne and her staff who took the ladies on a tour and gave them the history of the buildings and an insight into what takes place from day to day. The evening was very inter-esting and educational. Many thanks to Eithne and staff.

Our outing to Newland's Garden Centre was very pop-ular again this year. The staff gave us demonstrations and great tips for the garden. Everyone came home laden with plants.

Mary Hey wood and Ann Fox held a coffee morning on Friday 20th May. They raised £273 for Telethon. Well done ladies!

The book Knocklyon Past and Present detailing the history of Knocklyon is still available from Superquinn. It's a must for anyone interested in the area.

SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL NEWS Courtesy Cllr. John Hannon

• Proposed change of name from 'Orlagh Dale' to 'Orlagh Wood'. In response to an application submitted on behalf of the residents of Orlagh Dale, Scholarstown Road, to change the name of the road to Orlagh Wood, Scholarstown Road, a plebiscite will now be undertaken by the Council to decide the matter. • Traffic Management Proposals - Firhouse Road/ Knock-lyon Road/Ballycullen Road The Knocklyon Road Improvement Scheme will be completed within the next month. The possible re-alignment of the junction with Firhouse Road, the provision of a pedestrian phase in the traffic lights and the provision of a railing on the Delaford side of the road (as requested by the residents) are being discussed with the National Roads Authority as a matter of urgency.

Traffic Section is also examining the junction with Delaford Avenue with a view to allowing traffic from Delaford Avenue easy access to the new road.

Work has commenced on the Ballycullen Road Improvement Scheme and the contractor has been asked to complete the northern section, linking to Firhouse Road, as quickly as possible. The junction with Firhouse Road will be signal-controlled and linked to the other two sets of traffic lights at the Firhouse Bridge and Ballycullen Road. It is not intended to open the re-aligned Knock-lyon Road until this section of the Ballycullen Road is completed.

The Southern Cross Motorway Scheme awaiting the outcome of High Court proceedings, provides for the closure of both the Knocklyon Road and Ballycullen Road where they are crossed by the Southern Cross Route.

The proposal to extinguish public right of way for vehicular traffic at some points on both the Knocklyon and Ballycullen Roads in conjunction with the opening of the re-aligned Knocklyon Road will be discussed at a forthcoming Council Meeting. Cllr. Hannon would welcome your opinions at 4942045.

Courtesy Cllr. Maty Muldoon • Planning & Development Meeting 1 / 3 / 9 4 At the above meeting the Scholarstown Draft Action Plan was formally approved. This plan deals with the development of residentially-zoned lands for housing, the improvement of the road network serving lands in the area and the adequacy of provision of facilities including Primary and Post Primary schools, shops and other neighbourhood facilities, also the provision of open space. However, in the Scholarstown area there is not sufficient open space. This space must be found elsewhere, possibly south of the motorway reservation, which will also need access. Cllr. Muldoon will monitor this situation and will keep us informed when the opportunity arises to acquire open space.

• Pedestrian Bridge at Mount Carmel, Firhouse A tender has been accepted and approved for the construction of a new bridge at the same point exactly as the old one. Work is due to

commence very shortly and is expected to continue for twelve weeks. • Footpath Development at Riding Stables, Knocklyon Rd. Arrangements are in hand for the publication and service of the Statutory Notice of Confirmation dated 11 /5 /94 (and referred to under Cllr. Ormonde's contribution). An appeal can be made to the High Court to question the validity of the Order within twenty-one days following the publication of the Notice of Confirmation.

Courtesy Senator Ormonde • Flooding The flooding problems in Knocklyon Green and Delaford Drive have been investigated, and work will commence shortly on a proposed overflow system to alleviate such occurrences in future.

• C.P.O. Riding Stables The Minister for the Environment has indicated to Senator Ormonde that he has confirmed without modification on 11th May 1994 the Compulsory Purchase Order for a piece of land adjacent to the Riding Stables, Knocklyon Road.

KNOCKLYON COMMUNITY COUNCIL UPDATE

As this is our last chance to communicate with you before the Summer Holidays we take this opportunity to remind you that it is important to re-activate inactive and defunct residents' groups because there are many issues coming up for Knocklyon which require a strong united front. Each recognised residents', neigh-bourhood watch, sporting or community group is entitled to one representative on Knocklyon Community Council.

In response to representations to the Minister for the Environment Mr: Michael Smith last year, regarding the unsightly Knocklyon/Firhouse Road junctionf we are pleased to say that £200,000 has been allocated to start the work of cleaning up this very untidy and dangerous area. There have been a number of minor accidents here and we would appeal to the Minister to urgently provide the extra funds necessary to build the retaining wall at the Dodder River and complete the outstanding work.

I would ask the residents of Knocklyon to keep watch on newly-planted trees in the area. We particularly deplore the mindless vandalism carried out on the trees on Templeroan Road causing great expense to South Dublin Council plus the loss to the local environment.

The pending High Court Case regarding the Southern Cross Route has not yet been listed for hearing.

I would like to wish everyone in Knocklyon a very enjoyable Summer.

YOUTH CLUB UPDATE

The club is held on Friday Nights for juniors and

Saturday afternoons and evenings for seniors

and young adults. The main activities are indoor

soccer, basketball, arts and crafts, table tennis,

snooker and board games. A number of discos

were also held during the year. The fact that the

club is consistently well attended must indicate

that we are successful to some extent. Recently

we had a Fun Night in aid of "People in Need"

(Telethon) and raised £250 in just two hours.

We would like to thank our sponsors who

donated prizes - Superquinn, Musgraves, Lee Jeans, Ulster Bank and Knocklyon Florists.

To end our year we had an enjoyable outing to

the Blessington Leisure Pursuits Centre on Sun-

day 29th May. We were extremely lucky with the

weather, and 150 children participated in both

land and water sports. As an added bonus the

group were given a trip on the Water Bus.

The A.G.M. of the club was held on 26th May

at which three of our youth leaders - Grainne

Doherty, Barry Doherty and Keith McCluskey -

were elected to the Committee. A full list of the

committee will be published in September.

We have over 350 members and it is expected that this number will increase dramatically when we open on Saturday mornings (hopefully in October).

New members are always welcome and you can save by standing order if you wish.

We would like to thank Mr. Pat Kelly most sincerely for giving us the use of the Senior School. Thanks are due also to all our volunteers for their hard work and dedication and to our members for their support and encouragement (and sometimes their patience).

We are open every Friday night in St. Colmcille's Senior School from 7.15 p.m. to 9 p.m. (including holiday times).
