tenerife AT A GLANCE
Although Tenerife has less than 1 million inhabitants, the island welcomes more than 5 million tourists each year. Tourism is by far the largest source of income. But what exactly is the attraction of this ‘island of perpetual spring’?
Tourist paradise
Tenerife is synonymous with sun, relaxation and
enjoyment. The sub-tropical climate ensures
pleasant temperatures in both summer and
winter. The beaches are irresistibly beautiful
and are perfect for sunbathing and swimming all
year round.
The deliciously warm sea water offers numerous
possibilities for water sports enthusiasts, even
during the winter: jet-ski, surfing, pedalo, diving,
sailing, etc.
The island also has plenty to offer culture-
vultures. The different traces left behind by
pioneers from all over the world make Tenerife
unique. The picturesque villages and historic
towns are guaranteed to appeal to every lover of
local heritage and traditions.
The natural beauty on this volcanic island is
exceptional. The majestic El Teide, a volcano
that is visible from everywhere on the island, is
a memorable experience for every visitor. In the
winter months you can enjoy the spectacular
sight of its snow-covered top. The rough and
varied lava landscape of the beautiful Las Cañadas
nature reserve at the foot of the volcano provides
a stunning decor for Spain’s highest peak.
Tenerife is also a paradise for golf lovers. The
island has nine immaculate courses, where the
greenness of the grass contrasts dramatically
with the brilliant blue of the sea. Little wonder that
Tenerife and the Canary Islands have attracted
growing numbers of golfers in recent years.
The bustling shipping centres, the vibrant
nightlife and the many restaurants complete
the picture and help to make Tenerife what it
undoubtedly is: a top tourist destination.
Ideal climate
The sun always shines on the south coast of
Tenerife, both in summer and winter. Thanks
to the warm winds blowing from the Sahara,
the island archipelago enjoys a mild and
pleasant climate all year round, with average
temperatures of 18°C in the winter and 24°C in
the summer. Because the temperature hardly
drops after sunset, it is possible to sit outdoors
until late in the evening. The temperature of the
sea water varies between 18 and 22°C.
tenerife PRACTICAL
Travelling to Tenerife
Thanks to the numerous direct flights each day
from the European mainland, Tenerife is an easy
place to reach for Europeans. Costa Adeje is
about 20 minutes’ drive from the Reina Sofia
International Airport.
The numerous car rental firms at the airport offer
a wide selection of hire cars in all categories, both
for short and long-term leasing.
Travel documents
Tenerife is an autonomous province of Spain
and is therefore part of the European Union.
This means that residents from European Union
member states only need a passport or identity
card to travel to the island. It is compulsory for
children younger than 12 years to have a Kid’s ID.
Local transport
Car drivers will soon notice that the roads on
the island are in perfect condition. All the most
important tourist sites are easily accessible, both
by car and bicycle. The capital city of Santa Cruz de
Tenerife is just a short journey away by motorway.
There is extensive public transport on the island,
which is efficient and easy to use. There is a
direct bus connection from Los Cristianos to
most towns and municipalities.
People who want to explore the archipelago
further are recommended to use the excellent
ferry boat services that run between the
different islands, departing from Los Cristianos
and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Each island also has
a small airport, with several flights each day.
Money matters
The official currency in Tenerife is the euro,
but other currencies - such as American dollars
and British pounds - can be exchanged easily at
various points on the island. Major credit cards -
like Visa, MasterCard and American Express -
are widely accepted by banks and cash points.
The larger shops, hotels and restaurants also
accept these cards in most cases.

The Corales Suites Resort has a wide selection of the very best restaurants for the lovers of fine food. The restaurants serve a wide variety of dishes, from authentic Canary Islands menus to celebrated international cuisines.
Restaurants and bars
Top restaurants
Gastronomes will be delighted with the
selection of fine food and wines on offer in the
Corales Suites Resort. The resort has four top
quality restaurants with varied menus, so that
there is something to suit every taste.
Canarian cuisine
The secret of Canarian cuisine is simplicity and
fresh local produce. The most typical of these
products are fish, sea food, bananas, mangos,
rabbits, goats and goats’ cheese. Tenerife is
blessed with an abundance of natural goodness.
The fish is almost literally served ‘fresh from
the sea’. Redfish, swordfish and sea bream
are plentiful (and delicious), but there are also
less common species, such as damselfish and
parrotfish, a local speciality. Deep-fried, pan-
fried or as part of a fish casserole, the Canarian
fish dishes are mouth-wateringly good.
Another typical local dish is papas arrugadas
with mojo. Papas arrugdas are small but
flavoursome potatoes, boiled in the peel in very
salty water. They are served as a side dish and
go well with fish. The potatoes are accompanied
by a red and green mojo, sauces based on olive
oil. The red sauce is spicy, with peppers, paprika
and garlic, while the green sauce is milder, with
parsley and coriander. A true Canarian delicacy!
International cuisine
One of the four restaurants is dedicated to
serving international cuisine from around the
world. High on the menu list are typical Spanish
dishes, such as paella, tortillas and tapas, but
you will also find German, French and Italian
specialities. And for those with more exotic
culinary tastes, there is even a selection of
recipes with strong Chinese, Arabian and even
Indian influences.
Bars
The resort has a number of bars, spread
throughout the domain. You can order drinks
from the lobby bar or at the swimming pools.
The pool bars also serve a selection of snacks
and warm appetisers. In your suite you can
order drinks 24-hours a day from room service.
In the surroundings
There are plenty of fascinating things to discover in the immediate vicinity of the Corales Suites Resort. The island can offer a wide range of activities, whether you are a culture vulture, a sports lover or a nature freak. In Tenerife, you will never be bored!
The modern tourist centre of Playa de las
Américas is just 7 kilometres from the resort.
It is famed above all for its beautiful beaches,
which attract sun-worshippers from all over
the world, but there are also fun shopping
streets, supermarkets and countless bars. Not
to mention the trendy clubs, where you can
dance the night away with the Tenerife jet-set.
The spectacular water parks Siam Park
Tenerife and Aqualand are a paradise for
swimmers, with slides and wild-water chutes
that are amongst the best in Europe. The Siam
Park Tenerife covers an 18.5 hectare site,
including a magnificent tropical garden.
Charming spots
At the foot of the Corales Suites Resort lies the
charming village of La Caleta. This traditional
fishing village, nestling in the shelter of the bay,
is the best place to find truly delicious grilled
fish and tapas. The village has long been known
for its culinary excellence and has numerous
seafront bars and restaurants. A modest
promenade and a pebble beach complete the
idyllic picture. The authentic calm of La Caleta
is a welcome counterbalance to the hustle and
bustle of Playa de las Américas.
Adeje, just a few kilometres from La Caleta, is
also worth a visit. It is a well-preserved town in
the typical colonial style. You can visit several
historic buildings and churches, as well as a
monastery and the imposing 16th century fort.
Adeje was also the site of the royal residence
of one of the last kings (‘Menceys’) of the
Guanches, the original inhabitants of
the islands.
The underwater world
The port of Los Cristianos is the starting
point for different kinds of tourist boat trips.
The excursions on board a glass-bottomed boat
are a unique attraction, and definitely not to be
missed. The glass bottom allows you to admire
the magical underwater world.
Colourful parrotfish, seahorses, octopus,
cardinalfish and huge crabs swim under the
boat, right in front of your very eyes!
There are also daily boat excursions to spot
for whales and dolphins, again starting from
Los Cristianos and from the neighbouring
harbour at Puerto Colón. Tenerife is one of the
best places on earth to view these fantastic
mammals in their natural habitat.
If you want to take an even closer look at life
beneath the waves, you can always opt for
snorkelling or deep-sea diving, exploring the
wonderful world of rays, barracudas, turtles
and tropical fish. Tenerife’s south coast boasts
a large number of diving centres with many
different diving packages, ranging from test
dives and courses for beginners to expeditions
to the depths of the ocean.
The Corales Suites Resort has a wide selection of the very best restaurants for the lovers of fine food. The restaurants serve a wide variety of dishes, from authentic Canary Islands menus to celebrated international cuisines.
.45
Sun and sea
The Corales Suites Resort is ideally situated for beach lovers. There are kilometres of beautiful beaches on the Costa Adeje, guaranteeing limitless sand and water fun, far from the madding crowd.
Excursions
There are always lots of different things to do
in Tenerife. Shopping enthusiasts are certain to
have a great time. In Costa Adeje, Playa de las
Américas and Los Cristianos there are dozens
of trendy boutiques and luxury stores. In the
island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you
can visit the fashionable shopping street, Calle
del Castillo, or the famous department store,
El Corte Inglés.
If culture is more your thing, you will no doubt
be fascinated by the historic towns of San
Cristóbal de La Laguna and La Orotava. Here
you can visit several museums or enjoy an
atmospheric walk along the narrow streets,
filled with memories of the past.
For those who would like to explore the
northern part of the island, a visit to the
centuries’ old dragon tree in Icod de los Vinos
is a must. Close by lies the small town of
Garachico, which was almost completely buried
in lava during the last eruption of the Teide
volcano.
A visit to the Teide National Park is also an
unforgettable experience. Numerous travel
companies organise excursions to the park,
by bus, jeep or on foot. A cable car takes you
almost to the summit - the Pico del Telde - of
this 3,718-metre high volcano.
But you can also enjoy the wonders of nature
closer to the Corales Suites Resort. In Adeje,
the Barranco del Infierno is a real challenge

Exclusive beaches
The beautiful beaches of Costa Adeje stretch
over a distance of 700 metres and have all
the facilities you need, such as parasols,
sun loungers, showers, restaurants, bars
and parking areas. Not far from Costa Adeje
there are also excellent beaches at Torviscas
and Fañabé. These are situated on a busy
promenade, where there is always something
going on. The sea here is calm and a dip in the
deep blue water is super-refreshing. These
beaches also offer all the necessary facilities.
If you would like to try a beach a little further
away, La Enramada and La Pinta are both highly
recommended. La Enramada is near to Playa de
las Américas and is a pebble beach that has been
artificially remodelled with fine volcanic sand,
to make it easier for swimmers and sunbathers
alike. La Pinta is a pleasant, well sheltered beach
close to marina at Puerto Colón.
Water sports
For those who like action holidays, there is a wide
variety of water sports on offer. For many people
jet-skiing, water-skiing or a ride on a banana boat
is all the excitement they need.
The strong winds and glorious sunshine also
attract many windsurfers to the island’s shores.
In particular, the beach at El Médano is famed for
its ideal surfing conditions. Kite surfing is also
very popular.

numerous arrangements, from test dives and

Relaxation
Anyone who visits Costa Adeje will soon become familiar with the typical Spanish way of life, with its emphasis on siesta and fiesta. Sun-kissed terraces, trendy nightclubs, stylish lounge bars and fashionable shopping centres are guaranteed to get everyone in the right holiday mood.
At the busy local mercados or markets you can
find fresh fish, fruit and flowers every day of
the week. But if you really want to get away
from it all, why not go with the flow and take a
leisurely walk along the long boulevard that links
Costa Adeje with the town of Los Cristianos.
There are plenty of shops, bars and terraces to
entertain you along the way. And what could be
nicer than a refreshing drink in the shade of a
palm tree, with the ocean at your feet?
Why not try a mojito cubano or a zumo, a kind
of fresh fruit juice made with papaya, pineapple
or mango? Beer lovers will doubtless enjoy the
local Dorada and Reina beers. The island also
boasts many fine local wines. Another typical
local drink is ronmiel, a honey-based rum,
which is a great way to end a good meal.
Nightlife
Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos are
the most well-know nightlife hotspots on the
island. The numerous clubs, karaoke bars and
taverns are very popular with tourists and local
people alike. And if you are feeling lucky, why
not pay a visit to the Casino de las Américas?
Another favourite with foreign visitors are the
spectacular dinner shows in the Pirámide de
Arona in Los Cristianos.
Shopping
Residents at the Corales Suites Resort can
choose between several different shopping
centres, all with a wide range of products
and all within easy reach. The stylish Plaza del
Duque and el Mirador centres offer an excellent
selection of luxury articles, from electronic
appliances and photographic equipment to
perfume, jewellery, leather goods and fashion.
The best place for authentic and original
souvenirs is the ‘feria de artesanía’. This local
market sells handmade craft items, including
typical embroidery work, lace and ceramics.

Golf
Tenerife is a mecca for golfers. The sub-tropical climate, the spectacular sea views and the excellently designed courses attract amateurs and professionals from all over the world. The island has no fewer than nine outstanding golf clubs, where the greenness of the grass contrasts dramatically with the brilliant blue of the sea. Little wonder that Tenerife and the Canary Islands have become increasingly popular destinations for golfers in recent years.
The courses are all of the highest quality, but
of different types. Several legs of the PGA
Spanish Open have been held on the island over
the years.
Not far from the Corales Suites Resort lies
the prestigious Golf Costa Adeje, the most
exclusive club in Tenerife. The course was
designed by José ‘Pepe’ Gancedo, a successful
amateur golfer and six-time Spanish champion.
The way the course has been integrated into its
surroundings is unique, with stunning views of
the ocean, the island of La Gomera and the hills
of the interior. The 18-hole course also boasts
a magnificent clubhouse and a lift that takes
players down to the lower level tee of the
ninth hole.
The Abama Golf and Spa Resort in Guía de
Isora, a little to the west of Costa Adeja, offers
visitors a complete package. The 18-hole
course was designed by golf legend Dave
Thomas and is remarkable for its 22 lakes
and 90,000 palm trees, interspersed with
marvellous panoramas and sea views.
Teide National Park
The Teide is not only the highest mountain in Spain, but is also one of the most impressive volcanoes anywhere in the world. You can visit this dramatic moon-like landscape by car, bus or jeep. It makes an ideal day-trip from the Corales Suites Resort.
Las Cañadas, the region around the Teide, is
designated as a national park and has been
included on the UNESCO world heritage list since
1954. The park contains the Pico del Teide, the
giant 600-metre wide crater, as well as the
hills and slopes that surround it. Together, they
form an awe-inspiring wilderness of ash beds,
petrified lava flows and ash cones. The last
eruption of the volcano dates from 1798.
To reach Las Cañadas, you first need to pass
through the pine tree belt. From here, a cable
car takes visitors almost up to the crater
lip in just eight minutes. On clear days, the
view from the cable car station stretches for
hundreds of kilometres. Climbing to the very top
of the volcano is only possible if you have the
necessary permit.
The park also houses the El Portillo visitors’
centre, which includes an exhibition about
the volcano and its related fauna and flora.
The mountain was sacred to the Guanches,
the original inhabitants of the island, and is
still a source of inspiration for modern artists
and writers.

Walking
Tenerife is a walking paradise. Walkers from choose from a wide variety of different routes, each with a differing degree of difficulty. The one thing they all have in common is magnificent scenery.
Nature on Tenerife is very varied, ranging
from the bare, desert-like south to the fertile
north, with its luxuriant gardens and banana
plantations. The coastline is rocky and rugged,
but there are also sizeable wooded regions with
laurel and pine.
There are signposted walking paths all over the
island. You can buy the route maps at the local
tourist offices. Many of the routes are suitable
for beginners; others require more experience.
Nine of the routes are in the Teide National Park.
Some are relatively easy, lasting just two hours.
Others are more testing, such as the eight-
hour hike to the Pico Viejo. The short walk to the
strange rock formations of the Roques de García
is very popular. So too is the route running
across Las Cañadas, the dry plains where
temporary lakes form during rainy periods.
On the west side of the island, the famous Masca
Gorge runs between the imposing cliffs of Los
Gigantes. The walk leading through the gorge
is definitely not to be missed. The adventurous
descent through the rocky labyrinth ends with
breathtaking views of the deep blue ocean.
The road from Arona to Adeje is a pleasant
walk at altitude, with fine views of the coastline
around Playa de las Amércas.
For something a little more relaxing, why not
take a stroll with family and friends along the
delightful beachside promenade that runs from
La Caleta to Los Cristianos? It is a unique and
nature-rich experience, starting on the beach
at the Corales Suites Resort and winding along
the shoreline, with the sound of the surf in your
ears. The promenade is also great for an early
morning jog or for a romantic evening walk
beneath the setting sun.
History AND HERITAGE
Costa Adeje is an excellent base for visiting numerous picturesque towns, idyllic villages and sites of historical interest.
Masca, 25 kilometres to the north, is a popular
destination for day-trippers. This former
‘pirates’ nest’ is now a charming village of
white-painted houses, set high against the
cliff wall, overlooking a gorge. It can only be
reached via a steep and winding road, but the
view at the end is well worth the effort.
The delightful town of Garachico, on the
northern coast, was founded by merchants
from Genua in the 16th century. The traditional
townscape has been preserved largely intact,
with old churches, medieval monasteries and
stately mansions.
An hour’s drive from the Corales Suites Resort
brings you to the capital city of Santa Cruz de
Tenerife, where the 19th century colonial-style
architecture and the hyper-modern concert
hall designed by the famous Spanish architect
Calatrava form a striking contrast that is
typical of the island as a whole.
Set amidst luscious banana plantations, the
more northerly coastal town of Puerto de la
Cruz has also managed to preserve its 19th
century charm. In the interior, La Orotava is
another of the island’s most unspoilt villages,
with its steep cobbled streets and its authentic
17th century houses, decorated with fine
wooden carving.
Excursions
Travel agencies offer a wide range of trips and excursions to all the most beautiful spots in Tenerife. A desert safari by camel, a fishing expedition or an amusement park? The choice is yours! And there is something for everyone.
Los Gigantes is a gigantic volcanic rock
formation that rises up vertically out of the
sea on the west coast of the island. This stone
mass stretches over a length of ten kilometres
at a height of more than 500 metres and is
best admired by boat. Various sea trips are
possible, usually in combination with whale or
dolphin spotting.
Another unforgettable way to admire the
coastline is by paragliding, where you glide
from the cliff top down to the shoreline,
suspended from a hang glider. Not for the
faint-hearted!
Loro Parque is the largest wildlife park on
Tenerife and is located on the north coast
near Puerto de la Cruz. There are numerous
attractions, including killer whales, dolphins
and sea lions, as well as the parrot shows
that were the park’s very first attraction. This
tropical park welcomes more than 11 million
visitors each year.
The neighbouring island of La Gomera can
easily be reached by the ferryboat service
operating from Los Cristianos. This tiny island
is famed for the lushness of its vegetation.
There are only a few small pebble beaches and
hardly any tourist infrastructure. But you are
guaranteed to experience nature at its purest.
So just relax and enjoy the scenery or take a
stroll through the centuries’ old laurel woods.
