    ACCOUNTOF THE

    Benevolent Institution;

    A LIST of the GOVERNORSANNEXED.

    IN January 1780, feveral refpe

  • TTHIS laudable undertaking has met with the patronage and fup-port of many of the nobility and gentry,—the countenance andencouragement of the public,—and has been made the happy meanofadminiftering relief and comfort to many truly valuable Mothers.

    The prefent age is not more diflinguithed by its knowledge andrefinement, than by its attention to the wants of mifery, and thecries of indigence : And to the honor of the Britijh nation be itremembered, that there is fcarcely a calamity incident to humannature that has not fome charity, public or private, inftituted forits relief. But though to alleviate the diftreffes of any of our fel-low-creatures is an afil becoming the man, the citizen, and thechriftian, yet there are perfons, whofe wants call for particularattention, and times when they require our tendered care andaffifiance.

    If there be any perfons ini the community, who have a prior rightto the notice of a charitable public, it is finely the poor,—fober,—indufirious married women, and that too at a period, when theyrequire all that the powers of art can do, to footh, or mitigatetheir pains.

    Not only the preffing necelfities of the inferior members of thecommunity call upon thofe, whom Providence has bleffed withaffluence, but the good of the commonwealth, alfo puts in a pow-erful claim, that this, and timilar inftitutions, thould be counte-nanced and fupported. Nothing is fo likely to promote indufiryarid population, as the encouragement of matrimony, and nothingwill be more likely to encourage it, than for the lower orders ofthe people to’fee, that the-rich and great are ready and willing tocontribute towards fheir happincls andTupport, in fo honorable aBate.

    It is not the defign of this addrefs to attempt to recommend theBenevolent Injlitution by cenfuring or condemning other charities;—the hofpituls for the reception of poor women in the hour of labourare particularly deferring of praife ; yet experience convinces theycan afford but a partial relief to the numerous poor, of this greatmetropolis, and its vicinity ; for there are thoufands of poor mar-ried women in thefe cities, who occafionally want charitable affifi-ance in their difirel's, but, who cannot procure admiffion into thehofpitals, if they were difpofed to folicit it; and if all, who mightfolicit, could be admitted, yet the very circumftance of feparating

  • women from their hufbands and families, mud be highly difagree-able and inconvenient to the parties; for not to infill upon the faft,that a poor couple have as much tendernefs for each other as thofein more elevated ftations of life, yet the abfence of a mother fromher family mult create great confulion and dillrefs; for though awoman during the time of fuch indifpolition, may not be able to domuch in her family, her being on the fpot to direct what Jhouldbedone, will be greatly conducive to regularity and good order; andlender unneceflary the fuperintendence of the hulband, on whofelabor the family depending entirely for fupport, not an hour ofhis time can be 101 l without an elfential injury. Or Ihould he haveno family, his wife being from home, he may be induced to fpendhis evenings in a public houfe, where he may form connectionswhich may ultimately deftroy his own happinefs, bereave his wifeofa once affectionate hulband, and rob the community of a goodand ufeful member; while on the other hand, the hulband beingan eyewitnefs to the forrows of his wife, all the finer feelings areawakened, Ihe is more loved, while affeftion for the new-bornoffspring ftimulates the poor artizan to frelh efforts of indultry.

    The defign, therefore, of this charity is, to afford to poor mar-ried women, at their own habitations , the affillance of midwives,regularly inftrucled in their buljnefs, and all neceffary medicinesduring the time of their lying-in ; and in all cafes of difficulty anddanger, the advice and affillance of a phylician and man-midwife ;which as it may be done comparatively at a fmall expence, thepromoters of this Plan with to recommend it,to the notice andpatronage of the Public, hoping for the affillance of the.liberal inthe execution of a fcheme calculated for the prefervation of life,the relief of indigence, the honor of marriage, the encouragementof population, and as a confequence of all thefe, the general wel-fare of fociety.

    Any Lady or Gentleman becoming a iSubfcriber of One Guinea.Jier Annum, will have a Right to recommend Eight pregnant Womenyearly, for every Guinea they fubfcribe, and to vote at all Elections.

    A Subfcription of Ten Guineas, or upwards, at one Time, con-flitutes the Subfcriber a Governor for Life, and entitles him torecommend Eight Objects every Year for every Ten Guineasfub-fcribed.
