AMVC ACTIVITY DAYS 2018

Staff at AMVC appreciate the importance of rewarding continued good work. For many years the College has offered three Activity Days at the end of the Summer Term for all Year 7, 8 and 9 students. Students benefit from mixing with other Year Groups, taking part in a variety of activities, and of course having fun. This year’s programme offers activities for everyone. Every trip is carefully planned and Risk Assessed. I am sure you will find an activity that suits your child.

THE PROCESS

The College has run Activity Days at the end of the summer term for many years. To improve the process, we have made a minor change. NO PAYMENT should be sent with the booking form. Once a place has been secured, deposits will become due by the deadline below. We aim to make the process as fair as possible and use a system that has been agreed by the AMVC Student Council. Therefore, students can only submit their choices on allocated days;

Some trips may already be oversubscribed by the time Year 8 or Year 7 have an opportunity to choose. Please talk this through with your son/daughter so they are prepared and make sensible choices. As students progress through lower school they will have the opportunity to access the more popular trips. After the signed booking form has been received, you will be able to see, within a couple of days, what activity your son/daughter has been allocated via ParentPay. The deposit will then be required. Payment must be made using ParentPay by the deadline date above. Please note that the initial deposit is non-refundable. For a trip not requiring payment, or parents not registered on ParentPay, a confirmation letter will be sent home with your son/daughter. To avoid disappointment, please ensure the correct deposit is paid by the deadline date. If payment is not received, the placement will be offered to another student from the ‘waiting list’. Please retain this booklet as your record and ensure the completed booking form on the back page is sent with your son/daughter on his/her set day.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE 3 days for 3 different adrenaline spikes! Please note that we will return to AMVC for 3:00 pm on Wednesday and Friday but we will not be back until 4:30 pm on Thursday Day 1: Spend the day at Rutland Aquapark tackling the inflatable assault course on the

lake in the morning and either paddle boarding or kayaking in the afternoon.

Day 2: Go-Karting at Letchworth and finish the day with an awards ceremony and prizes!

Day 3: Skiing lesson at Xscape in Milton Keynes. Suitable gloves will be required for this activity.

JEWELLERY AND CRAFTING

A fun and friendly school based 3 day activity. Come and join us to make jewellery using various media and techniques! You can have a go at using polymer clay, enamelling copper, beading and more to create unique items of jewellery. Make yourself and loved ones earrings, pendants, charm bracelets and rings. CHEFTASTIC!

If cooking is your thing, come and spend three days in the presence of professional chefs, learn some sweet and savoury recipes, have a go yourself and taste the end results. All three days are spent in AMVC Food Department. Non uniform even!

GOLF FOR INTERMEDIATES AND ADVANCED PLAYERS

Students must have their own golf clubs to take part in this 3 day Extravaganza. ‘A round each day keeps the doctor away!’ Players MUST have some experience of playing on a golf course prior to this activity. Students will travel by minibus and will be back by 3:05 pm.

LONDON ROCKS!

How do you fancy an overnight stay in London at the 4* Heston Hyde Hotel, watch the fabulous ‘School of Rock’ West End Show, explore the London Dungeons, eat at Planet Hollywood, and visit Warner Bros. Studio Tour London starring Harry Potter AND finally enjoy a day at the fair?

Day 1: Coach to London, lunch stop at Covent Garden, and then onto the LONDON DUNGEON - the London Dungeon combines real history, horror and humour to bring gruesome goings-on back to life in the 21st century. A thrilling and exciting trip that students will love, with actors recreating events such as the Great Fire of London, Sweeney Todd, the Plague and Jack the Ripper. From there to PLANET HOLLYWOOD for a meal like no other, followed by an evening performance of the hit musical SCHOOL OF ROCK, and an overnight stay in the Heston Hyde.

Day 2: After breakfast, a trip to visit the fantastic Warner Bros. Studio London and maybe ride a broomstick and drink some butterbeer. The team behind Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase these iconic props, costumes and sets so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand. Set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made, the Studio Tour offers visitors the unique opportunity to explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and breath-taking special effects – an amazing experience for all Potter fans!

SCRAPBOOKING

Scrapbooking is about using specialist materials to display your favourite photos. The ideas are endless and over 3 days you can learn many of the techniques used to create fabulous layouts involving creative papers, stamps, stickers, inks and more. This activity can offer lots of new ideas for both beginners and experienced scrap-bookers, and the projects we work on will be new so if you wish to do scrapbooking again this year you’ll learn even more. 3 DAY HORSE EVENTING Spend 3 days experiencing horsemanship, dressage, jumping and hacking out.

ROCKET CAR CHALLENGE

Are you a budding designer/engineer? Do you enjoy watching……….. Formula1? Top Gear? Fast and Loud?

We have an opportunity for you to design, make and race rocket powered cars in our team competition.

You will use all the facilities in the workshop to engineer and build your Rocket Car using wood, plastic forming, CAD/CAM – Vinyl Plotters, Laser Cutter and Electronics.

There may also be an opportunity to design, make and test other types of vehicles; including air powered rockets using air cannons.

STRATEGY GAMES

Over the 3 days you will be involved in a variety of strategy games. The exact nature of the 3 days will be tailored as much as possible to the students choosing the activity.

There will be the opportunity for students to bring their own games including models and paint for games like Warhammer.

There may also be the option to play computer based strategy games.

3 DAY EXTRAVAGANZA - HUMANITIES

Day 1: Hunstanton; leave the College at 9.00 am for fun at the seaside in Hunstanton, arriving back at Arthur Mellows for 3.00 pm.

Day 2: Cambridge; leave the College at 9.00 am to shop in Cambridge in the morning followed by an afternoon at the Leisure Park, students can bowl (included in cost) and /or play on arcade games. Returning to Arthur Mellows at 3.00 pm.

Day 3: Wicksteed Park; leave the College at 9.00 am for a fun-filled day at this theme park with rides and arcades. Returning to Arthur Mellows at 3.00 pm. (Please note that most rides are covered in the price but some of the rides will require funds on the day.)

FROM GLINTON TO WEST END: MUSICAL THEATRE 2018

Have you ever wanted to be on the West End stage, singing, dancing and acting your way to stardom? Then this is the activity for you! Over the course of 3 days you will experience what every musical theatre fan dreams of.

Day 1: Depart College at 9.00 am. Arrive in London take part in West End on Demand Musical Theatre Dance workshop. Evening meal at the Hard Rock Café London followed by West End show – Matilda, Lion King or Billy Elliot. Check in at hostel.

Day 2: Breakfast at hostel then depart for second workshop West End on Demand, Musical Theatre with singing focus. Free time for accompanied shopping in Covent Garden. Meal at Planet Hollywood followed by West End show – Matilda, Lion King or Billy Elliot.

Day 3: Breakfast at hostel then depart for London’s South Bank. Trip on The London Eye including 4D experience. Accompanied free time in the South Bank and a visit to The Globe Theatre. Depart London and arrive back in College at 5.00pm.

The cost of this trip includes all workshops, shows, dinner accommodation and travel. Students will need spending money for lunch and any shopping they wish to do.

MURAL PAINTING

Enthusiastic students are required to make a real difference to the look of the school. We will be working on a large scale mural. It will mean getting messy, getting creative and having fun. We will work together to produce a design, transfer it to a huge board and then the fun begins!!

You don’t have to be brilliant at drawing, just enthusiastic and good at team work.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Do you fancy building your own photo portfolio? Then this activity is for you.

Day 1: Introduction to DSLR cameras (Digital single-lens reflex), portrait workshop, Photoshop and file management.

Day 2: Landscape and nature photography, an introduction to time-lapse, stop-motion and shooting a video.

Day 3: Photoshop, printing and assembling a portfolio.

CYCLING ACTIVITY

Do you enjoy cycling? Do you enjoy fresh air and the countryside? Come and join us on some great local routes.

This activity is suitable for all abilities with some experience of cycling on roads; we will not leave anyone behind!

Have some money for refreshments to buy along the way. Bring a packed lunch, a cycle helmet and prepare to enjoy a perfect gentle summer activity. We will be cycling through quiet villages, The Deepings and also Ferry Meadows on one of the days. Roadworthy Mountain or Hybrid type bikes are better suited to the mixed terrain we cycle on but we do not allow BMX bikes.

GAME DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP If you enjoy coding computer games, this is the activity for you! Here is your chance to

enjoy 3 days of playing and creating computer games. What more could you want? You will be able to investigate a range of computer games from the past to the present and design and develop a game of your own to play with others.

Day 1:

Play a range of computer/console games from the past and identify the main elements of the games. Compare these games to present games and what main elements have changed.

Day 2:

Design a game based on what you have identified as main elements from Day 1. Use a range of resources to develop the game.

Day 3:

Complete development of the game and test it. Games that include scoring can be used in a competition. You can have a go at playing your friend’s game that he/she made.

AS SEEN ON PINTEREST There is a world of craft ideas on Pinterest and we are going to try and make a few of

them over 3 days of SPARKLY, COLOURFUL, CRAFTING fun! Each day will have a main activity plus we will also do a few smaller ones to be decided nearer the time. Everything you make is yours to keep or give to family and friends as gifts!

Day 1: Make a trinket box for your room or as a gift. Cover in photos, sparkles or

whatever your imagination can think of.

Day 2: Perler beads galore! We will be making Perler bead headphone tidies and much more! Later on we will make some bath salts and package them up as a present..

Day 3: OVER TO YOU – Have a look on the Pinterest website and pick 1 or 2 crafts you

would like to do. All we ask is that you may need to bring in your own materials if we haven’t already got them, or have run out. We will supply the basics like glue, card and scissors. Please check with Mrs Murphy before the day, for example we may not be able to accommodate canned spray paints.

TALLINGTON LAKES

Spend 3 days at Tallington Lakes. You will follow a varied programme of wet and dry activities, with opportunities to develop skills across the 3 days. An example of possible activities and schedule for the days are shown below. You will have nearly 2 hours of Sailing, Kayaking, Skiing and Climbing/Abseiling in total, hopefully meaning progression in these sports. You will also get a good taster of other water and land sports on each day.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURER

In this adventure, you will explore the River Wye by Canadian canoe and learn to survive in the wilderness along the way, taught by highly experienced canoe and outdoor instructors. Camping for 2 nights between the river and woodland, you will be cooking on an open fire and experiencing navigation through woods at night.

BEDTIME STORIES

Enter the magical world of fairy tales and create your own children’s book. Hot chocolate and marshmallows will be included!

Day 1: You will analyse a whole range of children’s story books to help inspire you. We will be looking at childhood classics like;

o The Gruffalo o Where’s Spot? o Cat in the Hat o Dear Zoo

o That’s not my … o The Hungry Caterpillar o The Tiger Who Came to Tea o Mog

o There was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.

You will identify the features of children’s books and how a children’s book works. You will then decide what your book is going to be about and prepare your materials.

Day 2: Writing the first draft of your story. Illustration techniques and mapping out your story to pictures.

Day 3: The final production of your book, including; editing, formatting, laminating, printing and presenting your final product. The workshop will close with tea, cupcakes and sharing of our original stories

DISNEYLAND PARIS

For those who want to combine all the thrill of rollercoasters, waterslides and the magic of Disney. This trip will give students TWO FULL DAYS in the THEME PARK and also includes a DAY TRIP TO PARIS, where students can test their French whilst cruising the Seine or visiting the plentiful shopping experiences! Cost includes 4 nights half-board accommodation, 2 full days in the park, travel and relevant insurance.

Monday 17 July Leave from Peterborough Station (time tbc) to London St Pancras International to

catch the Eurostar to Paris. Evening meal in hotel.

Day 2: Breakfast at hotel before taking 10 minute shuttle bus to Disneyland Theme Park. Full day in park.

ANIMAL ANTICS

A working-with-animals-style programme with an in depth safari tour around Woburn. This would encompass practical, hands-on activities with animals such as mucking out, enrichment talks about various exotic animal topics, behind-the-scenes tours, an off-road Land Rover tour, and the high ropes experience. All activities to take place daily on a rotational basis according to numbers and interest and will include:

Guided coach tour with classroom talks about the Safari Park, animal care, requirements to become a carer with some practical hands-on enrichment specialised to the animals of Woburn.

A guide led off-road Land Rover tour that takes you closer to the wild animals to enrich the experience. Getting as close as possible to the zoo wildlife while having the guide offer their knowledge by fulfilling your questions. Buckle up to learn about the lions, wolves, tigers, monkeys, lemurs, penguins, meerkats and tortoises.

Exciting high ropes experience, swinging from the treetops with safety harnesses, hooking and latching your carbineer with close supervision.
