22the AmsterdoteAmAs the first month of the year when you can ex-pect reasonably pleasant weather almost every day, April can be a great time to visit Amsterdam for people who like to avoid crowds and without having to worry about bringing a par-ka. The year’s events calendar begins to pick up steam, and the blossoming of the local tulips is in full swing in April.April in Amsterdam in April is filled with chilly days but sunny days, a smattering of rain and a profusion of spring flowers. Keukenhof Flower Gardens has thrown open its welcome doors. It is warm weather in April after months of cold and snow. Everything comes to life as if a switch has been turned on by nature’s own hand, including the numerous parks that dot Amsterdam and its streets too.

Springs sunshine means curtains up for the tourist season. Museums begin extending their opening hours and cafes suddenly come to life on outside terraces. For the budget minded, cost of accommodation as well as flights remains still low, particularly during the middle of the week. If you want to revel in this famous city and truly let yourself go, plan your sojourn here towards the end of April, Queen’s Day or Koninginnedag, the birthday of the iconic Queen Beatrix’s official birthday.I on behalf of Amsterdo.com welcome all reve-ling tourists to my singular city, Amsterdam. Here within the confines of the city and all around, you can find everything that a tourist looks for in a country.Have a good time

State Secretary Jet Bussemaker who announced the list Monday morning said it serves to keep history alive. “The list of Royal Monuments is a list of stories. Every

time we add a building to it, we say ‘this is such a story,” she said. The venue for the announcement of the 89 additions to the list –the Evoluon of Eindhoven-, also copped a spot on the list. The futuristic, flying saucer shaped structure is a conference center and former science museum erected by electronics company Philips in 1966. Since its construction, it has become a landmark and a symbol for the city. Also listed are concert building De Doelen in Rotterdam and the Zeeland Bridge, the longest bridge of the Netherlands, which spans between North Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland.Structures that have the status of State Monument may not be demolished or modified without a license. Owners of monuments are expected to maintain their property well, and may request state subsidy for this. The list is not yet final’ the Council for Culture still has to issue its advice and

Good news for those who see narrative in post WWII architecture: the Netherlands has added almost 90 buildings from the reconstruction period (1965-1965) on its list of State Monuments, including the exhibition halls of RAI Amsterdam and the city’s Hilton Hotel at Apollo Lane where Beatle John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono spent a week in bed discussing peace and love during their honeymoon in March 1969.

people who rather not be burdened by the obligations of owning a monument, may still object. The last time The Netherlands added new buildings to its list of architectural monuments was 2007; 100 buildings from the early reconstruction period (1940-1958) made it on then. The 89 buildings that are now being added are categorized in themes that played an important role in the early sixties. The train stations of Tilburg and Almelo are categorized in “Infrastructure” and the Hilton of Amsterdam and the

sculpture garden of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo were listed under “Leisure”. But the list also includes a couple of exemplary monuments, like the ANWB building in Wassenaar, the Radio Nederland Wereldomroep building in Hilversum and the KNVB Building in Zeist.Quite an interesting trip it would be if your thing is making your own list of all State Monuments.

55FAreWeLL, deAr QueeN BeAtriXThat the Dutch people love their Queen is clear, as

seen in all the joyous celebration on the Queens’ Day (Koninginnedag) every year on April 30.

But their celebrations this year may have a touch of sadness as their beloved Queen Beatrix, oldest reigning monarch in Dutch history, has announced that she will abdicate her throne in favour of her son, Prince Wilem-Alexander, who is set to become the Netherlands’ first King in 123 years. The day will mark the people’s farewell to their favourite Queen, as well as welcoming the new King on the first King’s Night on April 30.Queen Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard was born on 31 January 1938 as the eldest daughter of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. In 1980, also on April 30, Queen Juliana abdicated in favour of Beatrix.Queen Beatrix married German diplomat Claus von Amsberg with whom she had three sons: Prince Willem-Alexander (1967), Prince Friso (1968) and Prince Constantijn (1969). Prince Claus died in 2002.It’s all go for this year’s Queen’s Day festivities when usually close to a million orange-clad local residents and visitors crowd Amsterdam’s streets, canals and parks to wave the flag and to wish the Queen well. For visitors, it’s a real bonus to be submerged and swimming in this sea of orange as the biggest street party of the year rages on well into the night. The distinctive deep orange is colour of Dutch Royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau, and is seen everywhere, including being prominently worn by the Dutch national football team. The first Konninginnedag was celebrated in 1885 in honour of the birth of Queen Wilhelmina. Her daughter Queen Juliana, who succeeded to the throne in 1949, changed the day to April 30, as this was her mother’s birthday. The world will be watching Holland for its last Queen’s Day for a while, as festive boats, packed with revellers, gridlock the normally placid canals of Amsterdam. What’s on?Here are a few of the many celebrations happening:

AmsterdAm mArdi GrAsAmsterdam Mardi Gras of the gay community prances into action on the day with celebrations held on the Reguliersdwarsstraat, along the Amstel between Muntplein and Waterlooplein, on the Westermarkt by the Homomonument as well as on the Warmoesstraat and Zeedijk. The Reguliersdwaarsstraat Queen’s Day Street Party starts from 14.00 until late with free entrance. Bear Necessity at Odeon kicks off the celebrations early on Saturday 27 April, featuring DJs and laser shows, 23.00-5.00 (tickets: 17.50-22.50 euros).

Ndsm VrijhAVeNAmsterdam Noord joins in the Queen’s Day fun again this year on April 30 with the NDSM Vrijhaven event on the wharf. A big line-up of DJs will play music along the NDSM Wharf while there will be plenty of food, live art, theatre, a kids’ street market. From 9.00-22.00 with free entrance.

Fabrice’s career spans more than 30 years, but it’s his “mega-mosaics” that decorate several public facilities that are most popular: the Compass at Marie Heineken

Square, the colorful mosaic at Muiderpoort train station and Hoofddorp Square, and the latest one that decorates the corner of Willemspark and Cornelis Schuyt Streets in Amsterdam-South.“Most of all I am a shapes-man,” he says about his paintings. “I enjoy intertwining the shapes of humans and animals in such a way that you can still tell them apart. Colors are important as well. They accentuate what I display, but even if I do not use color for a painting you can still differentiate the forms in it,” he says.Fabrice has been a professional painter for the last 30 years, but he recalls expressing himself through art from when he was about five years old. “I used to be scared of things like cracks in the walls of our house, so I would draw over them and turn them into shapes that didn’t scare me,” he says. He studied at the Rijks Academie and he remembers times when art was appreciated and the glamorous could be cocky because their popularity made people buy their work even though it was sometimes worthless. “That was the spirit of that time,” he says.In a time when creative art is under siege, funding is drying up and people simply can’t spare the money to pay for quality,

I first came across Cil’s artwork at Modefabriek earlier this year. As soon as I saw it, I was captivated. Her style is a coming-together of elements from the

graphical, medieval and aboriginal art. Her subjects which are mostly female in shape, are beautifully rendered.Their hair is fashioned into beautiful and intricate patterns that swirl and repeat in a dream; like a dance across the surface they are drawn on.Cil has exhibited her work and also been commissioned for various Mural projects. In fact the bigger the canvas, the better you’ll enjoy this singular talent.

Fabrice has resisted running with the herds. “I prefer to do what I enjoy doing,” he says, admitting though that for the most, he now resorts to commerciality, where all inspiration that burrows inside his mind is poured onto paintings and everything has a price tag. This is what has left his studio looking like a potpourri of colors. “If you don’t work, you won’t eat, so I have to be commercial. Okay, I’m not at the point where I do Coca Cola banners, but all my work is for sale and I do accept the occasional job to do a portrait for a client,” he says. He insists that every piece he produces is an original. “That’s what people want these days. It has become too easy to reproduce and download art, to the extent that even the Chinese refuse certain

artistic work if they suspect that it’s been reproduced, while they themselves are masters at copying everything. Here, in my studio, only original pieces are produced,” he says. “I stand for arduous labor, for creating beautiful, durable art, not the fly-by-night stuff. But it’s getting more and more difficult for an artist like me, because we’re getting too hung up on that digital stuff, where website ratings and so on control everything and we slowly but surely control less and less.”Fortunately, he adds, there are enough people who appreciate what he does. “I get regular emails from people who want something from me and every month an exhibition opens somewhere where my work is featured.”

99de Griekse tAVerNA sign with the quote hangs over the window leading into

the kitchen at De Griekse Tavern, possibly the ultimate Greek experience in Amsterdam. Petros Ioannidis and

Eleni Koutsou, a Greek couple from Athens opened De Griekse Tavern over twelve years ago and never looked back. Petros’ always wanted to open a restaurant and in a bid to fulfill a dream and combine this with nostalgia De Griekse Tavern was born.

the house sPeCiALty is uNQuestioNABLy the meZZe.Petros and Eleni were the first to introduce a rather ingenious mode of ordering, which apparently dates back to ancient Athens. On a super sized tray the waiter (most of the time a job taken on by Petros himself!) brings 18 small platters displaying the Mezze menu options. From infamous dips such as taramasalata to Greek style whitebait, the customers get to scan over the food prior to ordering, allowing a bit of mouth watering before making the difficult choice. The beauty of the Greek tapas is their social purpose, which unlike the usual 3 course meal, are really a complimentary side to a few beers or doses of Ouzo, the backdrop to a social gathering where laughter and conversation are an essential part of the experience. Where sharing is an obligation as well as a pleasure. Until the summer comes and we book our holidays to Greece’s warmer climate, De Griekse Tavern and its Mezze offer us an alternative way to suck in a bit of the Greek way of living. In addition, how Greek can you get when you are served directly by the attentive owner of the establishment? This is what Petros and Eleni are all about, presence and participation. It is always reassuring and certainly very Mediterranean to be welcomed and served by the owner.

ouZo ANd FetA CheeseExpect to find everyone’s all time favourites; stuffed vine leaves, a selection of dips accompanied by freshly baked bread and the classic Greek Salad, refreshing and adorned with the best feta cheese in Amsterdam. The key to quality throughout the menu is the fresh Greek flavours, a simple but effective mixture of lemon, oregano, garlic and of course quality olive oil. The latter being the pride and joy of any Greek restaurant of note; here they use extra virgin olive oil from the Kalamata region in southern Greece. Good enough to drink! If you are feeling meaty do not miss out on the Mixed Grill, appropriately accompanied by grease-free homemade chips. The organic lamb they import from New Zealand is so tender all you need is a butter knife to tuck into it, a sign of excellent quality. The couple’s own invention Prawns in Tomato Sauce, Ouzo and Feta Cheese is another strong choice, which according to Petros came about after a failed attempt to cook beef in the famous spirit. A successful trial and error story shows that tradition as well as experimentation are the signature of De Griekse Tavern kitchen. Their large selection of Greek wines is the stuff to put a smile on Bacchus’ face and a little dose of Metaxa or Ouzo could not be more appropriate for the deserved appreciation of their creamy Moussaka. In the dessert menu there is the Tavern Specialty, a proud invention of the couple that proved another experimentation success; Greek yoghurt, walnut cake and homemade compote.

ALL to the souNd oF Greek FoLk musiC -LiVe Greek musiCThe decor in De Griekse Tavern could not be more adequate. No oversized marble or gold ornaments here, the ambience is pleasantly modest and unpretentious. It is like it has been transported by Zeus straight from Greece to the cold Dutch lands. The sort of understated and honest establishment you dine at day in and day out whilst on a summer holiday. Where the focus is on the food and comfort is found in the homeliness of the surroundings. All to the sound of Greek folk music. Live Greek music that is, if you are lucky and happen to book your table for one of their live music nights. ‘ We began the live music nights as an act of nostalgia, something for us to enjoy, but soon understood that our customers were equally enthusiastic about the multitude and energy of Greek sounds’ says Petros. During these ‘wild musical nights’ (in Petros’ own words) expect dancing on tables and clapping, transforming a delicious Meditteranean dinner into a night to be remembered. The couple is quick to

tell anecdotes of broken lampshades and heel holes on the bar, but they are relieved to add no injuries have ever been recorded. Ray, an American customer turned close friend proudly shows a photo book he compiled over the years in appreciation of the Griekse Tavern, which he describes as ‘relaxing and easy going’. Previously a neighbour, Ray is a regular customer, who even after moving away from Amsterdam still stops by for a bite and a drink with the owners. He shows me photos of the yearly thanksgiving celebrations held by the couple in the restaurant and is not ashamed to say that Petros’ Thanksgiving dinner

is better than anything that he could find back at home. The photos are a proof of it. Tables joined up, smiling customers posing as one big family. That is really the feel of the Griekse Tavern, besides the fresh, straight forward, quality food, the atmosphere is something not many restaurants can really cook up. It is the ‘Gezellig’ feeling the Dutch talk about, Greek style.

“Diamonds are forever.”

This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about these precious pieces of pure beauty. One diamond can light up a whole room – and

even shine beyond it. Now imagine many, many diamonds – sparkling, enthralling, capturing the light and winking with their smooth edges - a scene truly stunning, fiddling with the imagination – a scene that seems so distant and dreamy. Yet such a marvel can be found within the borders of Amsterdam! That’s right – our fair city is a home to an amazing collection of gems and diamonds in various forms – in jewels, single, even as parts of art pieces. The Diamond museum is something one of the places in Amsterdam that you just have to see for yourself in order to grasp the idea of what amazing experience it offers– going there truly is a must, not only for people who appreciate the beauty of gems, but also for everybody who is taken away with art and history. Old weapons, jewels, tiaras, crowns and other instructed with diamonds and precious stones creations of art and monuments of craftsmanship can be seen – an experience that will take you on a stirring journey throughout the halls of the museum.Your experience there can also come with an engrossing educational part. You will have the chance to observe an explanation about the formation of these rare, mysterious creations, called diamonds. The program continues with a film about the polishing procedures and a brief overview of the enigmatic, intriguing craft that the goldsmiths practice. The whole experience ends with a tutorial of how to evaluate a diamond – the four C’s - carat, clarity, colour and cut. After that you will be taken to the most interesting part – a tour through the wonders that lurk deeper in the building. One of the most significant pieces is one amazing katana sword, made of Murano glass, with diamonds and rubies in it. It has 1967 pieces of diamonds and 494 pieces of rubies in it - this numbers can only represent a shadow of the beauty teeming from this Japanese sword.Another interesting thing is that at some point you will be presented to one very special room – the glamour room. It is filled with diamond shaped mirror through the line, showing to the common eye, how diamond and glamour go together.Well, dear reader, I gave you a glimpse of what you can expect in the Diamond museum – the uncovering of its other offers is entirely up to you now!

1111CALF&BLoomFor twelve years, Willem Honnebier had owned and operated

Replay Café at Singel 461, right in the center of the city and two minutes walking distance from het Spui, Amsterdam’s

literary district. When the time came to do a total refurbishment, Willem thought it was also time to change the name. Calf&Bloom gets its name from the interior designer at Concrete Architectural Associates, who wanted to make a courtyard-like café between the shopping district Kalverstraat and the Bloemenmarkt (flower market). It’s an easy name to remember if you’re from out of town. “Whether you pronounce it the Dutch way or not, it means the same in English: Calf and Bloom. There’s a lot of tourists who come by and everybody understands Calf&Bloom,” says Willem, who now co-owns the establishment with Dennis van Dijk, the once long time floor manager.Joost van Rijswijk is the chef and according to Willem, he’s “a very young, intelligent guy who traveled the world,” which might explain Calf&Bloom’s international tastes. Joost describes the cuisine as Dutch with French and global influences. “I like to play around with flavors from different countries. We have a steak baguette with a really nice USA cut of meat and we put chimichurri on top. It’s a different flavor on a baguette. We also

serve local products such as the salmon from our French smoke house. They are really beautiful. I play around with some herring caviar and some crème fresh and dill. So it’s like half French and half Dutch.”Being so centrally located, Calf&Bloom is the perfect meeting-place for locals and sightseeing out-of-towners. It’s close to the University of Amsterdam’s main library, so its spacious, naturally lit courtyard is popular with students and professors alike. Willem says, “We attract a wide audience. It should be a place where everybody can feel comfortable whether you’re sitting with a laptop on the high table with a coffee or having an extensive lunch with wine. Maybe somebody over by the window is having a pastry and a nice coffee. Everybody, all day long, can come in and meet each other. It’s more of a cosmopolitan place with a nice outdoor terrace. It’s a very welcome, warm, and easygoing place.”

it’s on: the very first edition of TIKTAK Eclectic Music Festival in Amsterdam’s Arenapark. The

culmination of a series of splendid evenings at AIR, a bombastic Mysteryland stage and an epic New Year’s Eve at Heineken Music Hall. The most logical step for Amsterdam’s front runner in eclectic dance music: their very own festival.Presenting three stages and over thirty artists, we’re not taking half measures. Diversity is the key, with international headliners like Armand van Helden – the New York house pioneer, still hogging the limelight with projects like Ducksauce, Italian dance punk legend and Rihanna’s dj Congorock, Guatamalan trap icon Carnage, Bristol grime guru Redlight and UK heroes Jack Beats.Obviously, Holland’s very own cream of the crop in eclectic music will represent. De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, The Opposites and chart stormers Yellow Claw are all going to be there. Also The Flexican & MC Sef, DIO and his band and The Partysquad, who will do a special performance together with Ms. Dynamite, are all ready for it. That this is only a selection of a list counting over thirty, shouldn’t come as a surprise.TIKTAK will join forces with eclectic collective SFFRMKRS, who are adding a fabulous line-up in a massive tent. And Klassenfeestje (Geza Weisz, DIO & Manuel Broekman), currently gaining lots of popularity with an ode to the music of their youth. They’ll be hosting a stage and throwing a party, where anything goes!Sunday May 19th TIKTAK is coming large and won’t stop for nothing less than an epic Pentecost, ‘cause you’re absolutely free on Monday!

siNCe 1870What began as a small haberdashery more than 140 years ago has since broadened into a department store that has found an audience beyond the Netherlands. De Bijenkorf is now one of the most visited shops in Netherlands, and its history provides constant inspiration for fashion and design. The Dam location, a 21,000-square-metre building designed by architect J.A. van Straaten, remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the historic city center. Featured as a backdrop in a number of books and films set in Amsterdam, the building is an architectural triumph inside and out.

ProduCts & serViCesAll de Bijenkorf stores offer a wide range of products and services including many exclusive brands on the Dutch market. Products on offer include clothing for women, men, children and infants, electronics, jewellery, toys, food and drink, health and beauty items, packaged gifts, stationery,

No trip to Amsterdam would be complete without a visit to the only luxury department store in the Netherlands. With an outstanding selection of the top high-end brands, de Bijenkorf is the perfect place to go when visiting Amsterdam. With five floors of fashion and accessories, furniture, housewares, cosmetics, toys and home entertainment, visitors are bound to find an elegant souvenir or present. housewares, furniture, and much more.In addition, the ground floor of the Amsterdam store hosts shop-in-shops of high end fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Burberry, Gucci, Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo and Mulberry. In addition, this floor has a 1.750 m2 open accessory department with collections of premium brands and private label products.

eVeNtsThe surprising and breathtaking decorations in de Bijenkorf’s unique shop windows make them real attractions. Live theatre, dance and music performances can be seen on a regular basis. Each year around 300 events take place such as the launch of de Dutch VOGUE magazine. Since 2008 de Bijenkorf kicks off its Christmas season with a spectacular lighting event called Turn On The Lights during which the mayor of Amsterdam turns on the façade lighting of the Amsterdam store.According to de Bijenkorf Sales Director, Edo Beukema, “The store offers something for everyone, from shoes to

men’s fashion. Think of what will come from the more than 300 events that are held annually!”

dutCh desiGN At its BestThe characteristic building of the Amsterdam store has served as a backdrop in various films and books that are set in our capital. The centrally located Lichthal (Light Hall) in de Bijenkorf is an example of architectural ingenuity. The hall owes its name to its special lighting and its large light dome that offers a beautiful setting for the women’s fashion collections.According to Edo Beukema, “It is the diverse, constantly changing portfolio of products that has always marked de Bijenkorf out from its contemporaries!”

2020 LoCaL BeatsAiLiNG AmsterdAm By the -ViNyL- iNChImagine Amsterdam was a gramophone record. No

doubt it would be a precious antique, the crowning jewel of some private collection. But what would it

look like? How would it sound? Well, just try to visualize the waterways of the Grachtengordel and the surrounding canals, being filled not with water but pressed on black vinyl, consequently transforming into massive sound-bearing spiral grooves running from the periphery towards the inner center and there you have it: De Amsterdamse grachten have now become tracks of a fantasy Amsterdam record! So, let us try to explore this truly extraordinary disc, as we let an imaginary needle touch its outer edge and guide us through the record stores of the city’s center. As this somewhat special city-record starts spinning, our made-up stylus lands on Ferdinand Bolstraat, where Record Mania is located. Known amongst local vinyl friends for its quality and diverse offerings, this store was moved from the Jordaan area to De Pijp around 11 years ago. Displaying a varied collection of pop, classic rock, but also soul/funk/jazz/reggae/world/folk and classical music, you could easily find yourself visiting this place regularly, taking on an extensive quest for hidden treasures. Also available are needles and elements for record players. A special mention has to be made on the interior decoration and the cool vinyl-covered floor, which makes every visit to Record Mania a truly pleasurable experience.Situated just across the famous club Paradiso, next on our track list is Record Palace. A place that has been around for more than twenty years, it offers vinyl hunters the chance to discover many rare pressings and limited-edition discs, especially in the classic rock genre. An extra plus is the nice display of vintage photos and posters on the shop’s walls. While you’re at it, do not miss the opportunity to take a look at the extensive jazz collection (New Orleans through big-band and bebop to avant garde) located in the basement, along with some blues/folk/world records. Also, note that many well known musicians are said to be visiting this place when coming to perform in Amsterdam, so keep an eye out for celebrities while you’re browsing through the shop’s vinyl collection!Moving on westward and entering Prinsengracht, our stylus now touches upon Second Life Music, a small second-hand record shop of no particular interest to the collector, but with an assortment of various LPs at friendly prices across many different genres. Staying on the same direction, our sharp-pointed device comes across Rozengracht, where VelvetMusic is located. The Velvet chain consists of many stores around The Netherlands (the first one was opened in Leiden). VelvetMusic has a small but interesting collection of both new and second-hand vinyl (notably funk/soul/hip hop/pop/rock), most of it reasonably priced. Some extra cheap deals can also be found at the back of the shop. Just around the corner is InDeep’n’Dance, a record shop (and also a label) established in 1999 and specialized in techno and house, which also sells DJ gear, record bags, and design T-shirts.As the spinning of our unique Amsterdam disc goes on, it brings us to Back Beat Records, a cozy record shop situated right in the heart of Jordaan. As one can easily guess from the Blue Note sign outside the store, this is a place where any jazz lover will feel at home. Featuring a noteworthy collection of jazz/fusion/swing/bebop records, there are also several funk/soul/blues/rock LPs. A big plus is the knowledgeable and friendly staff. Not far from the jazzy Back Beat, right on the beautiful Weesterstraat lies Distortion Records. An independent record store of eclectic character, it sells music ranging from 70s punk/jazz/fusion/soul/Latin/lo-fi/garage/industrial to 80s - 90s indie/hip hop/reggae/drum’n’bass/house/electro/minimal techno. There are both new and second-hand records and ordering is also possible through the store’s

website, where an online catalog is updated regularly. Note that this place can often be a bit messy, which somewhat adds to its local charm; however, this also means digging your way into the crates could be necessary in order to spot what you are looking for!Just a few minutes away, Flesch Records offers a second-hand vinyl collection of considerable interest to those looking for collectibles, mainly in the classical/rock/jazz/soul genres. One of town’s truly unique vinyl spots, Flech Records is a place worth taking a bit of extra time in order to go through all the curiosities and collectibles on offer. Part of the store’s collection can also be found on sale at the nearby Noordermarkt. Last but not least, you can even catch some fresh fruit offered along with the various discs! If you feel like staying in the West Side to check out some more second-hand vinyl, you can pay a visit to the recently opened Eardrumm Buzz on Haarlemmerplein. Specialized in pop/rock/reggae/punk, it also offers several 12- and 7-inches, as well as a collection of second-hand record cases. And in case you’d like to top your new buys with a new look, then the adjacent hair salon Cut The Crap might come in handy! A bit further down on Haarlemmerdijk you will

also find Discostars, which features an assortment of LPs across various genres (mainly pop/soul/world/classical) at the back of the shop.By this point, the tracks on the outer part of our dreamy Amsterdam vinyl have been played and the imaginary needle continues its way to the inner tracks over a short gap marked by widely spaced groove. In between some scratching - or is it Metro construction works? - it stops on Concerto, a name which should ring a bell to any Amsterdam resident who still buys his or her music the old-fashioned way (i.e. not merely through downloading). Said to be the oldest record store in town, it holds a vast music collection and anyone willing to explore both new arrivals and second-hand vinyl will not be left unsatisfied, as there is something from pretty much any music genre for all different tastes. While you’re trying find your way through Concerto’s musical maze, take some time to marvel at the state-of-the-art record players, as well as the book and movie collections on offer. In case you need a break, you can always rest at the cosy café that recently opened within the store and plan your future vinyl-hunting strategies!Unlike Concerto’s massive proportions, the more modest

Page 19: Amsterdo Issue 4 2013

2121and specialized vinyl collection of Independent Outlet stands camouflaged next to the skate shop’s sneakers, T-shirts and other streetwear stuff. Focusing on punk/Oi!/garage, it offers mostly new vinyl, plenty of 7-inch records, while some second-hand records across different genres are also available. All of these, together with some nice music books and ‘zines, can also be browsed and ordered online. Just a slight spin away is Amstel Antiques. There, amongst second-hand items and other antiques, one can enjoy an interesting assortment of LPs from classical to soul/funk/jazz along with several -fittingly- dusty 7-inch records. Just across the Amstel groove, Waterloopleinmarkt is also a good spot for vinyl hunting. While you’re finding your way through the flea market’s clothes, antiques and various curiosities, make sure to check some of the second-hand records sold at various stands; you’d be surprised to know how many little gems lie hidden in there!Meanwhile, our city vinyl keeps spinning, and next on the playlist is Waxwell Records. A good place for record collectors and music enthusiasts, it specializes in soul/hip hop/funk/jazz and pop/rock, with a splash of blues, 70s disco and reggae. Established in 2005, Waxwell Records sells only vinyl (new and used) and also runs an online shop. Right next-door is Sugar & Spice Amsterdam, with a vinyl assortment of 60s/garage/blues/ pop/rock/ soul and world music. There’s also a section with cult movies and books, while art exhibitions and music events also take place.Coming up next is Rush Hour Records, which started in 1997 by importing obscure records from around the world and later went on exporting similar Dutch ones to companies abroad. A distribution wing thus evolved, paving the way to the creation of a record label that saw its first release just before the millennium. With an eclectic selection varying from house/techno/electro/disco to Latin/Brazil/African and jazz records, Rush Hour is the kind of place that appeals to many music aficionados by being able to satisfy highly specific or sophisticated demands and offer releases which are hard to find elsewhere. The needle now approaches the heart of our Amsterdam fantasy vinyl, and vibrates over Record Friend, which boasts a stock of approximately 35,000 new and used collectible records. Around since 2003, Record Friend is indeed a good friend of vinyl lovers, who can take pleasure in scrutinizing one of the biggest record collections in town. Especially

attractive is the classic rock/jazz section, but there are many noteworthy pieces from other music genres as well. Also available are turntables, record-cleaning accessories, needles and cartridges. Watch out for the tricky (yet very impressive) entrance, as you may find yourself entering a clothing shop instead! Staying on the same track (i.e. Sint Antoniesbreestraat) you can check out MuziKat, a cosy little shop with a few vinyl records and an appealing collection of music magazines and books, especially for those interested in early printings, old specials, dedication issues or hard-to-find editions. Our Amsterdam vinyl is about to stop playing, yet a few last

tracks remain. Discreetly nestled in the upstairs section of a bike-rental store on Nieuwe Nieuwstraat, Killa Cutz is a specialized record shop focusing mainly on drum’n’bass/dubstep/soul/funk, along with a smaller selection of house/techno. Ordering is also possible online and a comprehensive catalog is available on the shop’s webpage. In an inner courtyard just off Oudekerksplein, right in the heart of Amsterdam’s most infamous neighborhood, two very special record stores await the more adventurous, inquisitive vinyl hunters. After ringing the doorbell, opening the old barred door and going through the narrow corridor leading into the courtyard, one finally reaches this secluded vinyl haven. Accommodated inside a former prostitution window, Red Light Records may be tiny, yet it boasts an interesting second-hand vinyl collection covering many genres from jazz/disco/funk/kraut to electro and house. The neighbouring Vintage Voudou Records offers a unique selection of hard-to-get records from all over the world, covering exotic styles such as Latin/Bollywood/Cumbia and Caribbean. In times when the music business is experiencing rapid changes and going digital appears to many as the only way forward, the vinyl market with its faithful, old-fashioned followers seems to be posing an intriguing alternative. Will vinyl endure these hard times and re-establish its status as a medium of timeless quality for appreciating music? Only time can tell. But in the meantime, vinyl enthusiasts around Amsterdam had better visit those remaining record havens, for the name Amstel Antiques could prove prophetic regarding the future of various vinyl stores… Still, the passion and affection traditionally displayed by music aficionados regarding vinyl as an item and sound medium might turn out crucial in preserving the trade and interchange of all those precious and much beloved round black discs which just won’t quit scratching. After all, as one record seller meaningfully told us: ‘‘You don’t run a record store if you want to be a millionaire!’’
