Origin, time here:Here for 9 months and countingArrived February 1, 2011 Matt andI grew up in Huntington, WV; hiswork took us to Richmond, VA for 5years, and a new job opportunity ledus to Pittsburgh, PA for another 5 years

before coming here. I have been atrailing spouse, giving up my jobsas a nurse practitioner with each new

    venture.

Why So Paulo: I received a phone call last July (2010)

from Matt, who said, Guess what Ive been offered a promotionand its inBrazil. It was completely unexpected,

and quite a shock for both of us. After a lot of consideration, we decided to gofor it my family is from Argentina, sothe thought of living in South Americafor a few years (and closer to relatives)was enticing for me; not to mention thegreat experience it would be for our

boys. It was also a terri c opportunityfor Matt to gain international experiencewith his company.

Best things so ar:We have enjoyed meeting so manygreat people from all over the world, the wonderful food (our kids lovechurrascarias), nice weather, travelopportunities we wouldnt have if stillliving in the States, and having thechance to expose our kids to a newculture and language.

Early rustrations:All of the bureaucratic red tapeinvolved in trying to obtain CPF andRNE numbers and having countless

documents notarized of course, untilthese are done you cant really beginliving in So Paulo in order to beable to get phone, internet, and cable,

open a bank account, buy a car andreceive your belongings from home.Have saudade or anything back home:

Family and friends; I miss my job. Wemostly miss the simplicity of day-to-day life the familiarity of roads; thefact that I could have 5 errands to run,and could get them all done beforethe kids got home from school; openspaces; local sports teams; sandwichesfrom Primantis.

Progress with Portuguese:Since Im uent in Spanish, Portuguesehas been easy for me to learn itde nitely makes life easier to be ableto communicate! Though it has beenharder for Matt and the boys, they aretaking lessons and learning slowly, butthey improve every day.

Favorite place to hang out: The kids would be happy to spend all of their free time playing in the jungleinside our condo complex, while Mattand I enjoy caipirinhas by the pool; welove spending a Saturday or Sundayat Embu or Parque Ibirapuera, and

    Estancia is our favorite churrascaria.

    011 Forum 5

In the fast-paced world that is SoPaulo, its easy to get so caught up inthe daily grind that your health andwallet take a beating when it comes toeating.

The lucky ones have tasty, healthyhome-cooked meals prepared for them. Most of us, however, feel like we onlyhave expensive, inadequate fast food

or hefty food-coma-enducing meals tochoose from while out in the city. The expense of eating out in So

Paulo is one of the things that catchesmost expatriates off-guard. This isoften attributed to the increase in theaverage Brazilian salary, which in turnallows more people to eat at restaurantsthan had done so in the past.

Unfortunately, the opening of newrestaurants has failed to keep pace, thusthere is more demand than supply whenit comes to the food service sector, andthe prices at area restaurants re ectthat.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of fastfood outlets and the high salt contentin traditional Brazilian dishes enticethe unsuspecting diner into makingunhealthy food choices. Pasta ladenwith oily or creamy sauces, friedand fatty meats, and double doses of carbohydrates and sugars at a late nightdinner are all foods that pose a threat toheart and waistline.

These foods may taste good to you, but they arent good for you. In fact, even in a country known for lithe beach

bodies, silhouettes in So Paulo aresteadily getting pudgier and pudgier.

Still, there is a traditionalway of eating here in Brazil thatsates both taste and nutritionalconcerns. The basic combinationof steamed rice, boiled beans, leangrilled meat, and a mixture of rawand lightly-cooked vegetables can

be found on almost every block in So Paulo, especially aroundlunch time. In fact, per-kilo andall-you-can-eat buffets are the

best bet in terms of healthy eatingoutside of the home.

Brazils penchant for heavymid-day meals is actually a blessingin disguise, as most buffets comewith healthy and non-healthy optionsalike. Its this choice that makes allthe difference, and depending onthe neighborhood, of course thesesmorgasbords can be actually goodvalue for your real.

    Often, youll nd nutrient-rich brown

rice alongside the re ned, carb-heavywhite rice. A host of fresh vegetables, direct from farms in verdant So Paulostate, sit enticingly alongside steamed,

buttery legumes tasty, if not quitehealthy. Grilled chicken and beef almost always accompany stewed andsmothered meats. Many per-kilo spotsoffer vegetarian or light feijoada onWednesdays. Theres really no excusenot to eathealthy duringlunch.

There aretwo strategiesyou can tryto ensure youdont overeat, which woulddefeat the

purpose of eating healthyfood in therst place.

    One is to ll

half your platewith salad andgreens before

    packing onthe carbs and

proteins. Youre less likely to over- llthe plate if half the space is alreadytaken up by the green stuff.

The second strategy, depending onhow much time you have for lunch, is toeat in two waves. Eat a serving of foodas soon as you arrive, then let that settlefor a half-hour or so before returningto the buffet. This gives your bodytime to signal your mind that youreactually getting full. Its virtually full-

proof (heh-heh). To save money andcalories, skip the juices, soft drinks, andsweetened teas. Water is your friend.

Regardless of how long your lunchhour is, another key to healthy eatingis eating slowly. This may be dif cultwith a schedule chock full of meetingsand things to do. Still, your personalhealth should always trump anythingwork-related, so you always need totake time out to nourish your body andmind. How else can you expect to be

productive? So remember, check out the area buffets for the best, most economicalselection of foods. Make sure your

plate is full of varied colors and avors, including that necessary infusion of green. Try to stay away from fats, oils, and salts, especially those hidden insauces. Stick to water.

    Heres to your health.

    Things weve

    missedBy Maureen Kennedy Alves

What I missed:Organic baby ood. My son started on solids this summer

when we were back in the States for six weeks. It was so easy to go pick uploads of organic baby food at WholeFoods and even Target.

What I ound:Emprio da Papinha. This Brazilian company makes

fresh organic baby food for all stages- everything from single fruit to beef with rice and vegetables.

The So Paulo store is located inMoema, but they also deliver. For details, visit

    www.emporiodapapinha.com.br.

    By Monica Freyre

My tip for those who want to eatwell and cheap is to enroll in Diskcookon their website www.diskcook.com.br or by the phone.

You will receive the Diskcookmagazine with all the restaurants thatthey work with, including PJ Clarkes,Buca La Romana, Antiquarius,Almanara, and many more.

On the website, you will not onlyhave access to each restaurants menu

but also to various forms of paymentand tracking of your order. You canschedule delivery by both phone or online. There is even a section for special offers!

Whenever I am too busy, I have

no time, or I am too lazy to cook, Ialways use Diskcook and it worksexceptionally well.

    Members Tip

On the Hunt or BrunchByErnest White II,staf writer

With So Paulo being such anightlife-oriented place, nding

breakfast food after breakfast timecan be a challenge.

The Brazilian Brunch, on theother hand, gets going all over townafter about 11am and can often lastthe whole day, es pecially when thatSaturday-afternoon Brazilian feast of stewed meats, beans, and cachaa feijoada is involved.

A few places in town serve up thishearty phalanx of avors along withgood old-fashioned bacon and eggs.

St-Etienne, at the corner of AlamedaLorena and Rua Jos Eugnio deLima in Jardins, offers a stomach-lling all-you-can-eat spread for

just R$33, featuring a barrage of breakfast pastries and breads to gowith your feijoada.

The place is a favorite withforeigners and Brazilians alike, andcan get packed once the previousnights partiers have rousedthemselves.

Other French- avored breakfastspots include Itaims St-Honor, withits sophisticated atmosphere and lineup of tasty pastries and breads, and LeVinboulangerie in Jardins, with moistquiches and other Gallic delectables.Do expect to wait for a table thoughafter 10am or head to the other branchin Itaim which is far less crowded.

If youve got a hankering for

pancakes, two spots ought to x thatapjack fever in a ash: PJ Clarkes and 210 Diner. In Itaim Bibi, PJ Clarkes

the So Paulo offshoot of the NewYork classic serves up scores of

hot, buttery pancakes and waf essoaked in maple syrup from noonuntil 4pm, only on weekends.

Tucked away in Higienpolis210 Diner knows breakfast food.Modeled on the iconic Americaneateries, the diner scrambles upa heaping variety of egg dishesto go alongside that short stack:scrambled, sunny side up, poached, with bacon, with salmon, with

sausage. Num num!For AM comfort food, Rothko is

the only way to go. Located in VilaMadalena and with an internationally-infused menu, Rothko serves brunchfrom noon until 5pm, featuring theartery-hardening Fools Gold Loaf

based on a sandwich Elvis used towolf down back in the day: hollowed-out bread stuffed with peanut butter,

jelly, and bacon. If thats not lling enough, go hard

on the lard at OMalleysin Jardins alittle bit of Ireland in Brazil with thefull blown Celtic breakfast, including

baked beans, thatll put you back to bed. Bom appetite!

There you are, inside your house.Maybe youre tired after a full day of work, or anxious about the whereaboutsof your children, or maybe even sittingdown to your favorite TV show. So, youstroll towards the kitchen. And there itis: luminous, elegant, sacred. I presentto you: the refrigerator.

When Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarincoined the expression you are what

you eat in 1825, he was referring tothe pleasures of a good meal: Foodis not only nourishment for the body,

but also encompasses distraction, consolation, and union. We sit down atthe table for reasons that extend beyond

pure nutrition, including sharing amoment with friends, participating inceremonies, and even exploring newcultures.

In the 1950s however the taste of a good meal was obscured by the

discovery that excess fat damagedhealth. Meat, dairy, and carbohydratesare all responsible culprits.

So here you are staring at the food onyour plate at lunch - wondering if your arteries will nally clog with another spoonful of feijoada or if it would bea wiser choice to avoid your fth cupof beer. If indeed we are what we eat itis important to have a balanced diet in

both quality and quantity.Maintaining this balance is not an

easy feat. However you are not theonly one struggling: The worlds most

beloved cat, Gar eld, has an insatiable

appetite for lasagna. Mauricio deSouzas character, Magali, cannotcontrol her desire for food. Even theepic Friends gure, Joey, embodiesgluttony through his cravings for meatball subs.

Some people drink coffee fromthe very minute they trudge into thekitchen wearing comfortable pajamasto the nal minute they pull on those

pajamas before going to bed. Othershave learned calorie tables better thanthey know their multiplication tables.

Food has been used by many peopleas a cure-all to their problems. Wenow know that any form of stress isa driving force that pushes people toeat, eat, and eat. These silent battlesare fought with sharp forks and ruggedknives. In response to repressedfeelings, one engages in combat witha chocolate Easter bunny and savagely

bites its head off. People continuallyself medicate with chunky candy barsor luscious pieces of cake, beyond thevery feeling of ultimate satisfaction.

Once such habits are rmlyestablished, it is no longer a simplematter of just saying no since one scoopof dessert really never seems enough.

And this is where the addiction canstart. For years, experts have scoffedat the idea that one could be addictedto something as banal as ice creamor chips. But with the recent advanceof technology, medical scans haverevealed striking similarities in the

brain chemistry of drug addicts andunceasing overeaters. People with thisdiagnosis have been accused of lackingwill power. But research by the U.S.Department of Energys Brookhaven

National Laboratory in New York suggests that they lack adequate

brain receptors for dopamine instead.Dopamine is the chemical that activatesthe brains motivation system, that

triggers that pleasing aah response, that which would restrain overeatersfrom going to the fridge and gulpingdown leftovers.

It has been proven that, out of the tenfatal diseases that affect most people inthe world, ve are directly associated toa bad diet: obesity, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and cancer- particularly breastcancer, prostate cancer, and intestinalcancer. And you do not need to be acompulsive frequenter of thinning spas

to realize that a healthy and regulateddiet makes the organism work better:Your breath immediately improves, your hair becomes silkier, your skintakes on a rosy complexion. You evennd the energy to wake up earlier to gofor a walk.

We all know we should reduce portions to healthy sizes and contents -easy in theory, hard in practice!

Since we can now add food to the longlist of ercely addictive substances likealcohol and nicotine, shouldnt everyfood package now also come with anage warning and legal disclaimer?

Spending most of my life in coastalcities (Los Angeles and Salvador,Bahia), I have had a lot of good andfresh sea food.

Living in So Paulo was then achallenge but I have discovered thateven here you can nd good sh: If you are looking for the freshestsh then you should visitCEASP on Saturday or Sunday

from early morning until noon.Since there is very little traf con these days it becomes aneasy drive from most places.

The top sh you will ndare Garoupa, Pescada Amarelo,Robalo, Vermelho, Badejo andmany others.

I dont buy lets because Ilike to see the sh before it islleted. I pick a large sh (4-7kg), notice that its body is rm, scales

glossy, eyes not sunken and gills red. Then I ask them to let it and ask for the head and spine which can be usedto make sh stock. Calculate that about60% of the sh is let. You can ndfresh shrimp, mussels, octopus, crabmeat, and sometimes lobster (makesure it is alive). While you are havingyour sh cleaned, buy your fruits andvegetables. You can get a supermarketcart to use while you are doing your shopping. This is the best and cheapestto buy quality seafood in the city.

You can also buy quite good shat Hortifrutti (Natural da Terra) but

is considerably more expensive. Themarkets have seafood counters too butthink how far the sh needs to travelto get to the market so it would be mylast choice. In general, if the seafoodcounter smells then the seafood is notfresh!!

What about having sh and seafood

in restaurants? Many restaurants buyfrozen which is ok and cover withsauces so the taste is in the sauce. Ihave tried many seafood specialtyrestaurants in So Paulo (of course, notall) and would like to recommend thetwo that I like best for delicious freshseafood. Rufnos which is located onMario Ferraz but originally in Guarujahas decades of success. Pleasantambiance, although sometimes alittle noisy and hectic especially onSaturday and Sunday lunch. You canchoose your sh by size according tohow many people will be eating, then

choose the way it is to be preparedfor you, grilled, baked or in salt crust.Their octopus and shrimp preparedHungarian style is memorable. Their

prices are fair considering the qualityalthough not inexpensive.Right now however, my very favorite

seafood restaurant is the newPorto Rubaiyat on Rua Amauriin Itaim. Elegant but cozy

ambiance, you feel you reallywent someplace special for lunch or dinner. Try the excellentgrilled sh and the box(caixa) which is a selection of grilled shrimp, octopus, lobster and whatever other seafood inseason is available. Portionsare large so bring your appetite.

No need to order a rst course. The couvert is spectacular,

dont miss it. There is a live lobster

tank from which to choose yours to begrilled or prepared as you wish. Both places are in the same price range. Allin all you wont be disappointed witheither restaurant. Enjoy!!!

Its unlikely that most people wouldconnect the dots between actor LorenzoLamas, author JD Salinger, and racinglegend Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Even moredif cult to tie together are DonaldTrump, former New York Yankeesowner George Steinbrenner, and babyfood mogul Daniel Gerber. Infact, all six of these seeminglydifferent people have one keything in common that, most likely,

contributed to their success intheir respective professions: allattended a military school.

For many parents, the termmilitary school elicits imagesof uncooperative childrenin barracks waiting to betransformed into rule-abiding,respectable young adults. Infact, todays military schoolsare much different from thosein our grandparents day. One main

difference is that many of these schoolsare now coeducational and featurecollege-preparatory curriculums.

Military academies today focus oncollege preparation, says GretchenHerbst, Director of Admission atAdmiral Farragut Academy in Florida. Our goal is to educate students to

become well-rounded, self-con dent, independent thinkers ready to succeedin college.

Max Brooks, Director of Admissionat St. Johns Military School in Kansasfeels that military schools offer many

bene ts to adolescents: I believetodays military school environment ismuch more supportive, encouraging, understanding, and nurturing, saysBrooks. This is representative of thelessons in leadership that the schoolsare striving to impart.

Another common misperception isthat students attending military schoolsare doing so as a rst step towards

joining the military. The reality is

that few students actually continue inmilitary service upon graduation fromthese schools, dispelling the myth thatall military schools exist to churn out thenext batch of service men and women.

Why, then, would a student chooseto study in one of these academies if they dont have hopes of ying jets andsteering ships?

According to Cristhina Starke,Director of International Admissionat Wentworth Military Academy in

    Missouri, families choose military

schools for many different reasons, including a desire to develop leadershipskills and improve self-esteem.

I have seen many students gain self-control and mature in ways that oftentimes exceed the expectations of their

parents and even themselves, saysStarke. The military approach placesa larger emphasis on teamwork whichgives them the foundation necessary toexcel in any eld they might pursue. For those students with a genuinedesire to pursue a military career, these schools can certainly serve as anappropriate stepping stone towards thatgoal.

There is certainly no obligation, nor any suggestion for that matter, that graduates enlist in military serviceupon graduation from our school, saysBrooks. However, a military school

background can serve graduates withadditional opportunities and bene ts for those interested in a military career.

In addition to the college preparatory

curriculum offered by these schools, many offer a signi cant amount of extracurricular activities and leadershipopportunities for their students.Since most military schools feature a

boarding component, students have theopportunity to gain independence andlearn responsibility.

Beyond learning leadership skills, students experience a vast array of sports, electives, and community

projects, says Herbst. This all takes place in a diverse setting amongdedicated faculty and staff, manyof whom live on campus.

    Though military schools have

changed dramatically, the focusof most has remained the same:educating young people andencouraging development of leadership abilities, self-esteem,and responsibility. The type of student who would be best served

by a military school is no longer a rebellious, aggressive, and self-destructive adolescent.

According to Brooks, Amilitary school is the correct choice for

a young person that may be squandering potential, requiring additional levelsof structure and discipline to uncover their innate abilities.

Starke echoes these sentiments and believes families value the experience provided to their children by militaryschools.

Many parents and former studentshave shared with me how grateful theyare for the changes they have seen intheir childrens lives, says Starke. The structure and discipline that theyreceived at our school has becomeingrained in the students.

Food or ThoughtByMaureen Kennedy Alves,AmSoc board member

Thanksgiving is hands down myfavorite American holiday. Its all thehoopla of Christmas family, friends, food, good wine without all theheadache of holiday shopping andcrowds.

Although its a day when weresupposed to give thanks, I have toadmit, that has never really been high

on my agenda except for maybe right before Thanksgiving dinner, when myfather always insists that we go aroundthe table and say at least one thing thatwere thankful for.

But this year, for some reason Ive been giving extra thought to the thankful part. Maybe because Ive really come to believe that the thoughts we think haveas much effect on our health as the foodwe put in our bodies. And lately, Ive

been indulging in some not-so-good-for-me mental junk food.

Most of these thoughts, to be honest, have been about adjusting to life inSo Paulo. Sure, no matter where youare, you have good days and bad days

an adage that is especially true whenyou are living in a foreign country. Infact, a Portuguese teacher once told meadjusting to life abroad looks like theletter M, meaning lots of ups and downs. But what I noticed is that, at times, itseasier for me to focus on the down parthere, whether I am stuck in a traf c jam

on Faria Lima, breathing in car fumeswhile walking to the park, or trying toget a handle on my Portuguese.

Since I know Im not leaving SoPaulo any time soon, I thought about

what I could do to change mymindset. Because I can tellyou that focusing on what I donot like about this city gets menowhere. Except maybe morefrustrated.

Then my husband remindedme of something I told himwhen he was going through hisown adjustments as a Brazilianliving in New York City. And

that is that contentment is thehighest form of happiness.Which I take to mean that whenit comes to happiness, it really

doesnt matter where we are, what wehave, or even what were doing. Whatmatters it the attitude we bring to eachmoment. Do I want to ght the things Idont like about So Paulo or do I wantto accept where I am right now andmake the most of it?

And that brings me back to

Thanksgiving. One of the best wayswe can get content is to give thanksfor what we do have. Its the oppositeof indulging in mental junk food; itsmore like feasting on a meal that leavesyou satiated and energized. With that inmind, Im going to take a cue from mydad and share with you what Im mostthankful for this Thanksgiving.

I am thank ul that I am raising my child in Brazil.Yes, childcare is very affordable

here. But its not just that. My gratitudestarted the moment I arrived in Brazilsix months pregnant. Gone were thedays of standing in lines anywhere. Andonce the baby was born? Wow. All thecooing and fussing that people did itwas enough to make me think my babycould be Americas Next Top Model.

I am thank ul that I am not in the United Statesor the run-up to the 2012 election.

Oh my goodness. Democrat.Republican. I dont care which side of

the political fence you stand on. Themudslinging and nger-pointing from both parties is almost unbearable. Imglad that I dont have to read about itif I choose not to, let alone see it on the

    news every night.

I am thank ul or mangoes.Yes, thats right. Mangoes. Before

moving to Brazil, I had never reallyeaten a mango. I mean I had eaten amango, but theres a big difference

between a mango from the supermarketin the States and a fresh mango fromthe local feira. Its total bliss. And whoknew there were so many varieties?

I am thank ul or So Paulo weather.Although its raining for the fourth

day in a row as I write this, I reallylove the weather in So Paulo. Itscold enough in the winter to feel thechange of seasons, but good riddance tofreezing winds and temperatures belowzero. Not to mention, summer is justaround the corner.

So, there you have it. A quick list of

things Im most thankful for this holidayseason. Why not write your own? Asidefrom turkey and pumpkin pie, it may beexactly what your body is craving.
