FACE, Forum for Aspiring Computer Engineers,

hosted the following events during the month:

The first event of the semester, ‘Wingman’ on 3rd

January 2018 in the campus.

The event attracted active participation from cod-

ing enthusiasts and had an overall turnout of 30

teams. The questions were designed to assess the

coding skills and logical thinking of the students. It

was a pen-and-paper test comprising of a mix of

code writing and output-predicting questions. On

answering all the questions in the initial round, the

teams were allowed to proceed further and solve a

bonus question. All the teams were within the al-

lotted time of 30 minutes. Six teams faced each

other with great zeal in final round that was held

on the 9th of January 2018. It was an online con-

test, where the contestants had to solve three cod-

ing questions in a short span of 40 minutes. The

teams took part with great enthusiasm and showed

great competitive spirit to bask in the title of

‘Wingmen’.

‘Concepts of Reality’ under the banner of

‘Distinguished lecture program’ on 8th of January

2018. The speaker for the day was Mr. Prashant

from Studyowl. The objective of the session was to

enlighten the students about the concepts of virtual

reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. The

applications of augmented reality in the education

sector were highlighted and the career opportuni-

ties in this field were listed. Following this, the re-

search being pursued by Google in the domains of

AR and VR was discussed. The Developer Week-

end program, held at Trivandrum, Kerala, which

witnessed the country's first large scale demonstra-

tion of augmented reality was spoken about. The

concept of mixed reality was explained and its ap-

plications were expounded on. On a concluding

note, he shed light on Microsoft’s superlative holo-gram device and accentuated the growing populari-

ty of augmented reality.

At the end of the session, the students were given

an opportunity to experience VR through a VR

kit. The event proved to be highly informative and

it imparted knowledge to the students about the

modern technologies and research opportunities.

ACM Student's Chapter and FACE (CSE Forum)

organised an event named “Cyber Investigation” on the 11th January 2018. The event commenced

at 3:30 PM in the CP Lab, fifth floor. About 30

students from various branches and years of study

took part in this event.

It required the contestants to solve 6 simple

puzzles regarding a fictional cyber crime case

which eventually led to the location of the culprit.

The participants had to solve the puzzles in a spe-

cific order and the right answer to each puzzle was

the password which allowed them to access the

next puzzle. The puzzles tested the participants’ ability to solve sudoku, ASCII codes and apply

their common sense into problem solving.

The event came to an end at 4:20 PM.

Ms. Sowmya, Mr. Chandra and Mr. Sri Ram

Kalyan of S6-CSE finished first. Mr. Krishna

Vamsi and Mr. R. Anirud of S4-CSE bagged the

second place. A few participants were asked for

their views, which revealed that the contestants

enjoyed the event and could not get enough. They

were intrigued and found the event innovative and

interesting.

On popular demand, the organizing team is

looking forward to host Cyber Investigation Part 2

in the close future.

The Google Android Workshop was held on 17th

and 18th of January, 2018. The 2-day session was

conducted by Akshay Sushena Manjeri (S6-CSE)

who taught a gathering of more than 40 students.

Given the fast growing interests in the domain he

highlighted the importance of Android

development in the current era.

The session mainly focused on Android 3.0 and

rendered insights into calculator application. He

started off describing all the tools and components

available on Android studio.

Following this the students were engaged in a

question answer session to clarify their doubts and

queries.

The session ended on good note promising to

have similar sessions with hands on workshop in

the coming days.

IEEE PELS Distinguished Lecture on “Distributed Clean Energy Infrastructure” - By Prof. Krishna Shenai

The IEEE Power Electronics Society Student branch chapter of ASE, Bengaluru organised a Distinguished

Lecture on 16th January 2017 from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm on the topic “Distributed Clean Energy Infrastructure” by

Prof. Krishna Shenai, in Amriteshwari hall of Amrita University, Bengaluru. About 150 members including

Academicians from and nearby university(s) of Bengaluru attended the DLP out of which 50 where IEEE members, 3

members from other university and one member from industry. Dr. Shenai is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of American

Physical Society, a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Senior Fellow of The

Computation Institute at The University of Chicago, a University Scholar of the University of Illinois, and a member of

Serbian Academy of Engineers.

He gave a glimpse on the history of electricity and discussed about the power grid system across the world,

highly focussing on India’s grid. The main focus point throughout the talk is to generate, store, and utilize DC electricity locally from clean and sustainable energy sources without the need of long transmission line and distribution system

which enables the possibility for transformational changes in the electric utility and transportation infrastructures.

INGENIUM (A Mechanical Engineering Forum):

MECHADOTECNIA

“Great innovations, without great marketing is like driving with your eyes closed”.

MECHADOTECNIA, tech marketing that matters,

was conducted by Ingenium in collaboration with

Maardhani, the literary club, on 4th January 2018.Very

rudimentary components were given to the

participants and they had to market their innovative

products among the audience, within the drop of hat.

From basic pollution control mask to mind-boggling

electric car, participants added their creativity to their

products and tried convincing the judges to buy the

products. If products were fire, their marketing skills

were gasoline. Judges for the day, Lalith kumar,

secretary (Ingenium, the ME Forum), Harini S.,

secretary (Maardhani, the literary club), Rachana D.,

executive member (Ingenium), knocked for six with

the ingenuity of the participants.

Energy producing kettle, pocket friendly helmet and

lecture filtering student friendly radio took the

audience to the laughter world.
