BASIC ELEMENTS OF AMR/AMI
1. Smart Meters
Meters which periodically stores consumption values and send to the distribution company for billing and control purposes with theircommunication systems. 2. Communication Unit
Communication Units communicate with the smart meters connected themselves according to periodical or instant reading demands and collects data from meters, store data and then send to the data control center. The unit is a bridge between smart meters and control center. If somehow there becomes a communication problem between control unit and data center, control unit stores the data from short term till next succesfull communication.
AMR
Automatic Meter Reading
AMR is a technology that periodically (daily, hourly…) communicates with smart meters, collects consumption and meter state information with one way data communication and then transfers the data to control center for storage, billing, analisys and investment planning purposes.
Electronics, digital hardware and software work simultaneously and provide continues periodical meter reading with all timeavailable remote communication.Provides detailed information collection ability.
AMI
Advanced Metering Infrastructure
AMR goes beyond AMR system and provides remote control usage for fixed meter networks with two way data communication.
Meters in the AMI system are smart meters which can use collected data with programmed logic.

3. Control Center
Control Center stores the data collected from smart meters through Communication Units (CU) to the database. It converts these data to usable and meaningful data andgraphics for use of authorised users analisys and planning.

PLC is a communication technology over power lines for reading meter data remotely and open close meter relays. No extra cableing or RF structure is needed because the transmission is done over power lines. Communication structure enables 1024 meters over same line.
PLC uses existing power network system for data transfer. One connection may be used by more then one users. This way users connected to the same power network may read data over one cable.
PLC modems used in the system are working at CENELEC A-Band used in Europe for observation, control and energy usage.

RS485 : A communication technology which allows multiple numbered meters ( up to 128) connection to the same line and used to read meter data and control the meters. Communication distance may increase up to 1000 meters.
PSTN ( Public Switched Telephone Network ) : A communication technology used to trasmit meter data over fixed phone lines.
