Termination methods Screw connection
Screw clamps are designed acc. to EN 60999/VDE0609. Chart 1 below shows the screw size dependingon wire si ze and the required cl amping and testingtorque.

Technical Information
Crimp connectionA crimp connection is a non-detachable electrical connection between awire and a crimp contact produced with the crimp technology.Precise crimping di es which are matched to the crimp barrel and thewire size and a defined deformation result i n a reliable electricalconnection.There are open crimp barrels (stamped contacts) and closed crimpbarrels (turned contacts).
The main advantages of crimp connections are: Efficient termination of contacts. Reproducible electrical and mechanical figures with
a constant crimp quality.
The requirements for crimp connections are definedin DIN IEC 60352 Part 2.
An important point of the quality of a crimp connection is the achievedtensile strength of the termination.Easily measured, the tensile strength is a practible means for qualitycontrol purposes.Diagram 2 below shows the required minimum tensile strength for openand closed barrels depending on the wire size.
Assembly instructionsFor crimp contacts use the released crimp tool.
The insertion and extraction of crimp contacts shall only be approved with
the corresponding insertion / extraction tool.

Technical Information
Degree of protection
Electrical devices to which connectors belong to have to be protected forsafety reasons from outside i nfluences like dust, foreign objects, directcontact, moisture and water. This protection is provided on industrialconnectors by its housi ngs with their latching devices and sealed cableentries. The degree of protection can be selected depending on the type ofintended use. The standard IEC 60529 and/or DIN EN 60529 has specifiedthe degree of protection and divided i nto several cl asses.
The degree of protection is indi cated in the foll owing way:IP 65

1. General RemarksThese connectors are designed and produced in conformity with the l owvoltage directive (72/23/EWG) respectively Gertesicherheitsgesetz andaccording DIN VDE 57627 (German Law). All technical data refers to matedconnectors under li ve conditions. The safety of the connector systemdepends on the correct selection of products, proper assembly of theconnector device, and a precise fit of the connectors.If in special cases connectors can be used in the sense of plug and socketdevices, this is mentioned in the particular section.
2. Application RemarksConnectors and/or plug and socket devices must be used according tospecified technical ratings.
The technical data represents the initial value of mated parts underpredetermined conditi ons and length of time.These values could changewith di fferent test parameters or product requirements.The C 16-1/16- 3 Series connectors are used in a wide variety of industri esand equipment. Some of these include industr ial machines and controls,data processing, i nstrumentation and test equipment, medical devices,telecommunications network and equipment, pl us outdoor and marineapplications.All rated data for the connectors listed i n thi s catalog are based on over-voltage category III 1) and polluti on degree 3 2) for electronic applications.Connectors were completely mated according to their respective safetylocking mechanism. Selection and testing of connectors and/or plug andsocket devices to meet specifi c product or industri al requirements such asrated voltage and the related clearances and creepage distances are theresponsibility of the user.
3. Assembling RemarksProtection against electrical shock of the termination of the connectorsshall be secured by correct mounting. Connectors of the same or di fferentseries being mounted side by side may be protected against incorrectmating by the use of codi ng options. Care must be taken to ensure theparts are correctly mated and screws are tightened with the proper torque.
4. Termination RemarksCable connectors are effectively secured when using the internal cableclamp. When the connector contains a simpl e gland bushing for retentionwithout clamping ring the cable should have a strain relief close behind theconnector. All cable properties or specifications must be compatible withthe connector design and materials.
Designated wire conductors must be terminated to the correct pol es in theconnector.Crimp contacts must be fully inserted into the plastic housing and retentionassured with a slight tug on the wire.Wire should be stripped correctly according to printed specifications toinsure no electrical contact can be made between the conductors. Thereshould be no nicked or cut strains during the stripping action.

PolarizationDepending on the contact arrangements the polarization of this connectorseries can be varied. The contact inserts can be mounted in alternatepositions. The order number in the catalog refers always to position 1. Theposition of the contact inserts can also be changed by the customer using adisassembly tool (see page 26 and 29) to remove the insert and remount it inthe required position (see page 19).

Product description Order information
The circular connector series C 16-3 has two housing sizes. The connectors aredesigned to meet the high requirements of industrial applications under harshenvironmental conditions. The range includes versions with screw and crimpterminations. A selection of crimp contacts for hand crimp tools and crimpmachines enables a reliable termination resulting in qualitative, technical andeconomical advantages. A broad selection of housing styles are available.

Housing are made from high grade plastic material. Vibration safe connection by solid bayonet coupling with lock in position. Cable housing straight and right-angled with various cable outlets Protection degree IP 65 per IEC 60529 in mated condition. Internal strain relief with screw clamp or concentrical stain relief provides a safe
cable restrain.
