October SpeakerMark Hood

Can you identify this common tree planted as a shade tree, and in many areas the subject of heritage protection orders?Yes it is a weed that should be removed in most cases. The camphor Laurel tree is on the list of weeds, and causes a real dilemma for council enforcement officers.

Mark's talk was wide ranging and covered many common plants most members could identify. However, the fact that many were on the problem list was the real surprise. These included Morning

Glory, Gazanias & Nasturtiums. Controlled types include the Rhus plant, Pampas grass and Privet.

Mark noted that a number of members indicated they had relevant plants he mentioned. He was able to compensate for the failure of his electronic presentation by circulating samples.

Members noted that council itself was often in breach of its own orders. Mark acknowledged the problem, and that other instrumentalities like City Rail and Main Roads compounded enforcement problems. Willows and a number of waterweeds make up Category 5 — the Restricted plants.

Annual Subscriptions and 2010 budgets

Members are advised that the Treasurer John Garnett has given notice of the following motion to be put to members at the General Meeting on Thursday November 5.

"Annual subscriptions to be $87 per couple and $45 per single member".

Members will note that this 12-month subscription is the same as for the previous 9 months, The committee has recommended this fee in the light of the surplus for the current year. The fee is more than comparable with other clubs.

The 2010 budget will be on display prior to the meeting.

Members are advised that subscriptions will be due by 31st December upon successful resolution of the motion.

Fitness Programs

An Irishman was terribly overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet. "I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least three kilograms. When the Irishman returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 20 kilograms! "Why that amazing" said the doctor, "Did you follow my instructions?" The Irishman nodded .... I'll tell you though, Itaught I were going to drop dead on dat third day." "From hunger you mean?" said the doctor. "No, from the flamin' skippin'."

Pot Luck Dinners

There is still time to sign up to join a Pot Luck Dinner group.

This is a great 'no fuss' way to meet more of your fellow members in a smaller social environment. Eight members gather at one of their homes on a rotating basis to chat together over a home-cooked meal.

The host provides a main course with the guests providing entrees and sweets. It is not necessary to be a

Master Chef—the emphasis is on socialising rather than haute cuisine, so come and join us.Sign up at the General Meeting.

More Fitness Hints

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

My grandpa started wallking 5K a day when he was 60. How he’s 79 years old and we don’t know where he is.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing.

Every time I hear the word 'exercise' I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

The Pavilion at Bobbin Head was overflowing with 70 members enjoying good weather, fine food, and above all, good company to celebrate our first birthday. Many thanks to the BBQ chefs, salad makers and of course to the cake providers who helped make this such a great day.
