A way we could show kaitiakitanga is not letting our dogs run loose on beaches and not throwing our garbage in the sea.

Did you know the 5

dollar bill has a yellow

eyed penguin on it

Penguins die from oil spills or can

be made really sick. Oil effects

their living because their nests are

destroyed and the eggs are

wrecked.

The Yellow-eyed Penguin inhabits the south-east coast of New Zealand's South Island.

The yellow eyed penguins habitat is on a beach or in the sea.

The problem on our public beaches when penguins come ashore is dog control. Dog owners appreciate the freedom of romping with unleashed dogs on the open beaches. At certain times of the year penguins (yellow-eyed, Fiordland crested, erect crested, Little Blue and Snares crested ) come ashore either as juveniles to rest for the night or as adults to moult. This sometimes causes problems. A penguin is irresistible to most dogs as it has that fishy smell that can be air scented by dogs from a very long way off. Often well meaning dog owners only become aware of this when a penguin lies dead in a pile of feathers in the dunes. It takes only one bite to kill them.
