Parent Workshop

• What are the Year 2 SATS?

In 2014/15 a new national

curriculum framework was

introduced by the Government

The new curriculum is more

rigorous and sets high

expectations, which all schools

have had to work hard to meet in

the last two years.

WHAT WILL BE ASSESSED?

TESTS FOR YEAR IN 2018

READING

Paper 1- combined

reading prompt and

answer booklet

Paper 2- more

challenging separate

reading booklet and

reading answer

booklet.

All children sit BOTH

tests.

MATHS

Paper 1 –Arithmetic

Paper 2- Reasoning

All assessment are due to take place in May this year.

SAMPLE READING TEST QUESTIONS

Children will be asked to tick correct answers, they will be expected to find and retrieve

facts and sometimes explain their answers.

Reading Test 1 has combined text, questions and answers.

Reading Test 2 will have a more

challenging separate reading booklet and

reading answer booklet.

MATHS

Paper 1 –Arithmetic

Paper 2- Reasoning

Maths Tests

The arithmetic paper consists

of 25 questions. This paper

will test your child on their

knowledge of the four

operations - addition,

subtraction, multiplication

and division. The questions

are all in number sentences,

with no word problems, such

as:

15 + 9 = ____

2 x 5 = _____

48 + 23 = __

1/4 of 20 =

The reasoning paper includes

about 30 questions and takes

about 35 minutes. The paper

will test your child on their

ability to apply their maths

skills to various problems and

puzzles. They will be tested on

all four operations, fractions,

measurement, geometry and

statistics. N.B The children are

not allowed to use any maths

equipment during the tests.

They can draw though! The

tests are not strictly time

• Read regularly with and to your child.

• Be a positive role model of a ‘reader’(variety of

texts).

• Ask them lots of questions about what they have

read –Prediction, Summarising, Inference,

Deducing, finding evidence from text and looking

for key vocabulary

• Encourage your children to read a variety of

fiction and non-fiction books.

• Encourage your child to write at home, always be

positive about their efforts but point out a couple

of ideas of where they could improve.

• Cursive Handwriting practice

• Work on the target areas suggested at Parents’

evening.

• Play times tables games.(2,3,5,10)

• Play mental maths games including counting in

different amounts, forwards and backwards.

• Encourage opportunities for telling the time.

• Encourage opportunities for counting coins and money

e.g. finding amounts or calculating change when

shopping.

• Look for examples of 2D and 3D shapes around the

home and environment.

• Identify, weigh or measure quantities and amounts in

the kitchen or in recipes.
