§ SolarradiationintheMojaveDesertisamongthebestavailableintheUnitedStatesasitreceivestwiceasmuchsunlightastherestoftheUS.Aretropicallatitudes,theblue,cloudlessskiesareidealforSolarenergy.Theseplantscangenerallybebuiltinafewyearsbecausesolarplantsarebuiltalmostentirelyreadilyavailablematerials.SolarEnergyGeneratingSystems(SEGS)isthenamegiventoninesolarpowerplantstheMojaveDesertwerebuiltinthe1980s,thefirstcommercialsolarplant.Theseplantshaveacombinedcapacityof354megawatts(MW)whichmadethemthelargestsolarpowerintheworld.Aspartofsolartechnology,wateriscirculatedincoolingtowerstomaintaintheuseofsolarpanelswhichputspressureonpreciouswatersupplies.
