Sash Window Design

In early windows, the sash box is exposed and flush to the outside wall.

From 1709, the sash box had to be set back four inches.

From 1774 onwards, the sash box had to be recessed behind the brickwork.

During the Georgian period, sash window design changed because of fire regulations.
