We tracked an amount of 609 comments over a period of 3 days (08 – 10

August 2012) with regards to National Women’s Day.

National Women's Day is an annual public holiday in South Africa on the of

9th August. This commemorates the national march of 20 000 women

(all races and ages) on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation

that required African persons to carry the "pass", special

identification documents which restricted an African's freedom of movement

during the apartheid era.

Annually there is a celebration held where the President gives a speech in celebration and commemoration of Women’s Day, the event is broadcast for those who can’t attend. The theme for 2012 was: 56 years of women united against poverty, inequality and unemployment. The commemoration of the National Women’s Day took place in Tshwane, Gauteng (Union Buildings) on 9 August 2012.
