Atfirstglance,WitchcraftmayseemtobesimplyaflavourofSorcery.Butthetwomagicalaptitudesarequitedistinct.ThemaindifferencebetweenWitchcraftandSorceryisoneofskillvs.devotion.Sorcerersstudythearcaneprinciplesthatbindtheworldtogether,andhowtomanipulatethem.Witchesdevotetheirenergy,intheformofPersonalPOWerandservicesofvaryingtypeandduration,tooneormoremagicallypotententities,inreturngainingmagicalknowledgeintheformofspellsandrituals.ThePact: Mostwitchesorwarlocksrefuselong-termservice,insteadmakingPactsthatallowthemfreedomandeldritchinstruction.However,anywitchisabletomakewhateverpactshecanmanage.HighCHArismaisessentialtoasuccessfulwitch,andBargainingorInfluenceskillsareparticularlyusefulinstrikingPactsthatdonotcostthewitchtoomuch. Witches’Pactsaregenerallyforaspecificamountoftimeoruntilaparticularexchangehasbeencompleted.Oncetheyaredone,thepactisover.Ifawitchchoosestoapproachanentitythatshehashadapreviouspactwith,itmayormaynotbefavorabletoherdependingontheirpreviousinteraction,butshemustnegotiateanewpactifshewantsfurtherinstruction. TheexactexchangeinaPactmaybewhateverthewitchcannegotiateandtheentityprovide.Generally,theminimumcostofaPactwillbeCharacteristicPOWequaltothenumberofranksofspellslearned.However,spellknowledgeisnottheonlythingaPactcanoffer.Awitchmightrequirespecialinformationintheformofaritual,anenemy’sweakness,eventhelikesanddislikeofanotherentitythewitchhopestoconcludeapactwith.Exactlywhatisavailableisintendedtobeopen-endedfortheGM,andthisisagreatwaytointroducenewelementsintoagame. TheSkill–Witchcraft(POW+CHA):ThemainskillofthismagicalstyleiscalledWitchcraft.Itmaybeusedinthefollowingways

• Asaknowledgeskill,todeterminethewhereaboutsofpotentmagicalentities,thesortofmagicsuchanentitymightpossessandwhattheentitymightfindtemptinginabargain.

• Toappealtoaneldritchentitysuchthatitrespondstothecall.Witchesdonotsummonandbindsuchentities,theyentreatthemtovisit,oftenwithappropriatelytemptinggifts.Thesemightincluderiches,butarejustaslikelytobemagicallyandthematicallysignificanttotheparticularentitybeingcalled.OnasuccessfulWitchcraftroll,theentityhasheardandwillrespond

tothecallinaneutralorfavorablemood.Thebettertheroll,andthemoreappropriatetheritualandgifts,themorefavorablethemoodwillgenerallywillbe.

• Allowthewitchtoperceivemagicalpower,emanations,andeldritchbeings.Thedegreeofsuccessdetermineshowmuchinformationthewitchperceives.

• Castspells(SeeSpellcasting)Spellcasting:SpellsarelearnedinRanks.Sometimesthesearevariablespellsandmaybecastatlessthanfullpower.Otherspellshaveatotalcastingcostandcannotbecastvariably.Occasionally,aspellcanhaveabasecost,withadditionalranksrequiredforspecificManipulationsthatthespellallows. ThechancetocastanyknownWitchspellisequaltotheWitchcraftskill,butmaybenohigherthanCHAx5%.IftheWitchcraftskillishigherthanthatwitch’sCHArismax5,hertechnicalknowledgeexceedsherabilitytocontrolthemagicshehaslearned.

Example:AnraDevadorusisanaccomplishedwitchwithCHA17.HerWitchcraftskillisat94%.HerCHAx5=85%.Herspellcastingislimitedto85%.AllotherrollsrelatedtoWitchcraftarerolledagainstherfull94%.IfherCHAweretoriseto20,andherskillwerestilllower,shewouldbelimitedbythecurrentpercentageintheskill,butcouldrisewithexperiencetohernewMaximumof100(CHA20x5). ShouldherCHArismabereducedto15,Anra’sspellcastingwouldbereducedto75%,butherWitchcraftskillforotherrollswouldnotbeaffected.

ManipulationLimit:AwitchcanneverlearnaspellatahigherrankthatherManipulationLimit(whichisCHAdividedby3,roundingup).Herabilitytomanipulateaspectsofthespell(Range,Duration,etc)isalosolimitedbythesamenumber.ShecancastaspellwithatotalnumberofspellranksandmanipulationsnohigherthanherManipulationLimit.
