Section 1: Network Protocols of Wireless Networking

• A network protocol defines rules and conventions for communication between network devices.

• Network protocols include mechanisms for devices to identify and make connections with each other, as well as formatting rules that specify how data is packaged into messages sent and received.

• Hundreds of different computer network protocols have been developed each designed for specific purposes and environments.

Types of Network Protocols HTTP

• HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) • Provides a standard for web browsers and

servers to communicate• Communicate using HTTP responses and

messages

Types of Network ProtocolTCP / IP

• TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) – corresponds to the transport layer

• IP (Internet Protocol)- corresponds to the network layer

• The terms are often used interchangeably • The average person on the Internet works in a

predominately TCP/IP environment. Web browsers, for example, use TCP/IP to communicate with Web servers.

Question 1

How many different network protocols are there?

A. Two : IP and TCP B. One: HTTP C. There are hundreds

CORRECT!!!!

• C. There are hundreds because protocols have been designed to serve different environments and purposes

Question 2

• Which protocol provides a standard for web browsers and servers to communicate?

A. HTTP B. IPC. TCP

CORRECT!!!

• HTTP provides a standard for all web browsers.

Question 3

• The average person on the Internet uses this protocol to communicate with Web browsers.

A. HTTP B. IP or TCP C. Network

CORRECT!!

• The average person on the Internet works in a predominately TCP/IP environment. Web browsers, for example, use TCP/IP to communicate with Web servers.

Section 2: Standards of Wireless Networking

• 802.11 is the generic name of a family of standards for wireless networking related to Wi-Fi.

• The numbering system for 802.11 comes from the IEEE, who uses "802" to designate many computer networking standards including Ethernet.

IEEE

• In 1997, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the first WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) standard.

• They called it 802.11 after the name of the group formed to oversee its development.

Types of Standards:Wi-Fi Technologies

• 802.11a• 802.11b• 802.11g• 802.11n (the newest standard)

Pros and Cons of 802.11n

• Pros of 802.11n – fastest maximum speed and best signal range– more resistant to signal interference from outside

sources • Cons of 802.11n – standard is not yet finalized; costs more than

802.11g– the use of multiple signals may greatly interfere

with nearby 802.11b/g based networks.

Section 3: Wireless Networking Equipment

• Network Routers • Access Points • Adapters• Print Servers• Range Extender

Network Routers

•These routers support all home computers configured with wireless network adapters.• They also contain a network switch to allow some computers to be connected with Ethernet cables. •Wireless routers allow cable modem and DSL Internet connections to be shared. •Many wireless router products include a built-in firewall that protects the home network from intruders.

Access Points

• Used with routers to join the wireless client to the Ethernet network. • Commonly used in large office buildings. • Can be used in the home to extend the home network.

Adapters

• Allows a computing device to join a wireless LAN (Local Area Network).

• Wireless network adapters contain a built-in radio transmitter and receiver. Each adapter supports one or more of the 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g Wi-Fi standards.

• Most notebook computers are now manufactured with built-in wireless networking. Small chips inside the computer provide the equivalent functions of a network adapter. These computers obviously do not require separate installation of a separate wireless network adapter.

Print Servers• Allows one or two printers to be conveniently shared across a WiFi network.

•Wireless print servers offer the following advantages: •Allows printers to be conveniently located anywhere within wireless network range, not tied to the location of computers •Does not require a computer be always turned on in order to print •Does not require a computer to manage all print jobs, that can bog down its performance •Allows administrators to change computer names and other settings without having to re-configure the network printing settings.

Range Extender• A wireless range extender connects via Wi-Fi to a router or access point.• Increases the distance over which a WLAN signal can spread, overcoming obstacles and enhancing overall network signal quality.

Cell Phone Data Networks

• Better known as “Cellular Networks”• The network is distributed over areas called

“Cells”• Each cell has a transceiver called a “Base

Station”

Cellular Networks

• In a cellular radio network the coverage area is divided into regular shaped cells.

• Each cell has multiple frequencies. • Cells were established because multiple

frequencies could be used over shorter ranges.

Cell to Cell

• The cellular network system allows wireless communication over large areas

• Calls/Data is switched or handed off from one cell to another

Cellular Networks

• Sprint and Verizon networks use Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).

• AT&T and T-Mobile use Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) technology.

• Tri-band, quad-band, or "world phones" operate on Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) networks in the U.S. and abroad.
