Wind farms in Scotland

Facts and Figures

All about windfarms

• If you want a turbine for your birthday it will cost £15,000.

• A wind farm normally lasts 25 years.

• The green box near the turbines is called the transformer.

• The biggest wind turbine in the world is 196 metres high.

Renewable Energy Targets

• The UK is committed to supplying 15% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.

• In 2012,the UK sourced just over 4% of its energy from renewable sources.

• Scotland has set a target to supply 100% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020.

Facts and Figures

• Wind farms give us lots of renewable energy. • Mw stand for mega watts. • There are 250 wind turbines at Whitelee windfarm. • Wind turbines sometimes kill birds but the people who

build them try to make sure that wildlife is not affected. • There are turbines in the sea. These are called off-shore

windfarms. • You want your blades to be as light as possibly so that they

turn easily in the wind. • It takes 6 months to build a computer for a wind turbine.

Thank you for listening to our power point .
