Today, sprint cars can lap the track in 16 seconds, averaging 120 mph.

In 1968, without the protection of wings and roll-cages, drivers faced this kind of danger:

Jerry Mayer “over-ran” the rear wheel of Johnny Kay, and the subsequent ride looked like this, in a sequence of 9 photographs.

Notice the reactions of the spectators:

Mayer suffered broken legs and a skull fracture, but survived.
