“Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?”

Matthew 25:14-30

JOHN & JESUSMOSES & JOSHUAPAUL & TIMOTHY

JOSHUA & THE JUDGES

1 Peter 2:21-25• 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because

Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

• 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

• 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

1 Peter 2:21-25• 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own

body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

• 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls

Exodus 24:1313 And Moses rose up, and his minister Joshua: and Moses went up into the mount of God.

Numbers 14:7-9• The land, which we passed through to search

it, is an exceeding good land.• 8 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us

into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

• 9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.

Deuteronomy 31:7-8• 7 And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto

him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

• 8 And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Joshua 24:15• 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the

LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

1 Corinthians 4:1717 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

Philippians 2:19-22• 19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus

shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.

• 20 For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.

• 21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.

• 22 But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

2 Timothy 4:6-8• 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the

time of my departure is at hand.• 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my

course, I have kept the faith:• 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of

righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Judges 2:6-8• 6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the

children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

• 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.

• 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

Judges 2:9-11• 9 And they buried him in the border of his

inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

• 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

• 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim:

Why were Joshua & Timothy able to “step up” to the Challenge?

• Mentoring, Apprenticeship, TEACHING– Joshua was with Moses from the beginning

of his time as leader of Israel– Timothy was trained by Paul from a youth

OUR TIME IS LIMITEDBUT OUR

INFLUENCE CONTINUES

Proverbs 22:66 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Titus 2:1-6• 1 But speak thou the things which become sound

doctrine:• 2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate,

sound in faith, in charity, in patience.• 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in

behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

Titus 2:1-6• 4 That they may teach the young women to be

sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

• 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

• 6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

2 Timothy 2:1-2• 1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in

the grace that is in Christ Jesus.• 2 And the things that thou hast heard of

me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

2 Timothy 2:15• “Study to show thyself approved unto

God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
