What MarcEdit can

do for you

What is MarcEdit?

• MarcEdit is a metadata editing programme used primarily to create and manipulate MARC records. Originally developed by Terry Reese in 1999.

• Freeware – download from Internethttp://marcedit.reeset.net/downloads

• Regular updates

• Very active Listserv

Where do Marc records come from?

• Cataloguing agencies like OCLC/Skyriver, vendors, websites, exported from own LMS Example:

• .mrk (mnemonic file read by MarcEdit)• .mrc (binary format to be uploaded into your library system)

(Use Marcbreaker to convert .txt, .dat files into tabulated .mrk file)

• MarcEdit can convert a variety of other formats into marc

(Use Delimited Text Translator to convert Excel into marc)

General editing functions

• Sort

• Find and replace• Find and replace in a specific field = Edit field

• Add a field• Add a field (Conditional)

• Delete a field• Delete a field (Conditional)

• Change upper / lower case

• etc.

• TASK MANAGER = create a re-usable list of edit functions

MARC Validator

• Databases supporting the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) provide metadata records via their base URL

• Find the base URL on the website, on www.openarchives.org (mainly periodicals) or www.opendoar.org(institutional repositories), or contact the database administrators.
