Learn About It

WHAT IS A NONFICTION TEXT? Texts are commonly classified as fiction or nonfiction. The difference between these two types addresses whether a text talks about the world of the imagination (fiction) or the real world (nonfiction). FICTION is a kind of writing that is created from one’s imagination. Fiction texts are mainly written to entertain readers. Examples are poems, plays, novels, and short stories. NONFICTION is a kind of writing that is based on facts. Nonfiction texts are true stories about real people and real events that happened. Nonfiction texts are written usually to explain something. Examples include newspaper articles, personal accounts (diary/journal), textbooks, legal documents, biographies/autobiographies, interviews etc.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FEATURES OF A NONFICTION TEXT?

TEXT FEATURES include all the different elements that you can see, aside from the text itself. These ‘other’ elements support the main text in different ways. Identify these nonfiction features by carefully looking at the following images. Describe what you see and write it on the spaces provided.
