What did the pledges tell us about what matters to staff

and patients? Joe McCrea Social Media Lead for NHS Change Day

An NHS social movement for change

“Change is not the goal. The goal is the goal”

A different approach to transformation

Different....

A concentration on impacts and outcomes

The biggest single improvement event in the history of the NHS...

...and therefore of any organisation in the world

Historic

189,000 pledges made by frontline staff and health organisations

Enthusiasm for change?....

Pledge Total - 14th Feb to 13th March

Staff don't need to be given direction to initiate or publicly suggest change. Given the opportunity and freedom they will actively and enthusiastically choose to do so

Enthusiasm for change?....oh yes...

76% of pledges involved less than 9 people

54% of pledges involved 1 person

93% of pledges involved less than 50 people

A mass movement

Trusts lead the way

Pledges from across the NHS

Wide support from NHS-aligned organisations and individuals

Across the NHS and beyond

Primary Care has particular growth potential - 5% of CCGs and 0.1% of GP practices

25% of NHS Organisations overall took part

But potential for so much more...

189,000 pledges made by frontline staff and health organisations

68% pledging Better Patient Care or Spreading Innovation

Pledge Types

The power of a smile 36 pledges encompassing almost 3,500 people involved simply “smiling” with fellow staff or patients

including at:• Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Trust;• Birmingham Children’s Hospital;• Oxford Health NHS

Trust;• The Christie Hospital;• Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust;• Northampton General NHS Trust;•

Worcestershire Hospital NHS Trust;• Shropshire Community NHS Trust; and• Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Simple things make a difference Clear out redundant and out of date paper documents in offices from previous managers and archive area to clear space for operational work. Made a huge difference in the receipts and distribution area within the Trust. 200 archive boxes were taken away and confidentially destroyed

The smallest voice can be heard A 14 year old boy passed a note to his nurse, Kath Evans, asking staff to interact with patients a little more - because they can be scared or worried Kath promised to bring his note to the attention of her colleagues and the NHS

Help can always be given East Cheshire Commissioning Consortium - create a weekly opportunity for all staff to ask the question “what have I done to help a patient this week?” Examples do not just include what they have done directly as a result of the work that they are ‘employed’ to do but also recognise what they do when they do come into contact with a patient – and that can be a family or friend – be it in the car park, supermarket or on the street.

100+ little things can come together Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Trust organised over 130 pledges involving over 400 staff. One of the biggest was the mobilisation of over 220 local Innovation Scouts All pledges have been logged locally by the Innovation Hub who will follow up on all pledges within 3 months. The Chief Executive has pledged to report back to the whole organisation on the progress and sustainability of her pledges,

If you don’t ask, you don’t know... “

I pledge to ask every child, young person, parent or carer we see one thing they would

like to improve about their experience of care”

“I pledge to remember to ask if my more

junior colleagues have had a chance to stop work for lunch or for a break.”

I pledge to publicise the launch of our new real time experience system - to enable people to feedback about our service in

real time”

It costs nothing to say ‘Thanks’ “

I pledge to make my work colleagues feel supported and valued. To remind them of the

great jobs they are doing everyday” “

As a nurse I pledge to say thank you to the healthcare assistant I work with; asking her

what more I can do to support her in her work”

“Everyone working in the NHS deserves to

feel appreciated for the work that they do. It doesn’t take much to do this, just a simple

“thank you”

Change can also be big Queen’s Hospital, Romford pledged to create a Wellbeing Centre University Hospitals, Leicester pledged to introduce a more accountable electronic record-keeping system in their dermatology department

Everyone can create ripples “Each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and then the total — all of these acts — will be written in the history of this generation.” “Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others...he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of resistance.”
