Hinduism: Distinctives: • The physical universe is only an illusion • The divine is the “self” • The Vedas: Holy literature • Polytheism = Many gods (over 330 million)

The Social Classes: 1. Priests (Brahmins) 2. Warriors and nobles (Kshatriyas) 3. Merchants and artisans (Vaisyas) 4. Slaves (Shudras) 5. Untouchables (So low, not even “in”

the Caste system until recent reforms)

Three foundational assumptions: 1. The soul is eternal (Atman) 2. The soul is recycled

(Reincarnation) 3. Your merit affects how many

times you are recycled (Karma)

Christianity God created a real and substantive universe. Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created… 1 Tim 2:5-6 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men. Heb 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment…

Hinduism:

The universe is illusion and all in your mind. Believes that Brahma is the creator god, that there are many gods or that there is no creator and that everything is god. Believes that man dies thousands and millions of times and is reincarnated.

Christianity John 14:6-7 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Gal 3:28-29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Hinduism:

Rejects Jesus as The Savior and sees him as a sage or great teacher. Believes that there are many paths to Brahman (heaven) Believes that there are many different levels of society that are nearer and nearer to Brahman

Christianity: Eph 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punish-ment that brought us peace was upon him. Heb 10:13 by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

Hinduism:

Teaches that one’s merit moves him to higher and higher classes of society and then wins him oneness with the universe. Believes that one’s demerit (bad behavior) causes him to have to pay for it in experiencing bad Karma in this life and the next. Essentially You pay for your own sin.
