Most existing windows are aluminum with interior drywall/plaster returns, finished with wood trim and a wood or marble apron, or a combination of the two, as

pictured above

Why?

Aluminum windows on the west coast typically have stucco on exterior, and plaster or tile on interior. This makes removal of the window challenging at best.

The sashes are removed and the center mullion is cut (if applicable) and folded out of the unit, exposing fasteners on each side. The fasteners are then removed, leaving only the edge of the frame.

Per AAMA guidelines, it is required to liberally apply sealant to the entire

outer edge of the existing frame. This will help to prevent future leaking.

Please review installation instructions as well as AAMA guidelines prior to

installing the new window unit.

The unit is installed within the perimeter of the existing frame by driving installation screws through piloted holes made into the metal frame. It is

recommended to fill pilot holes with sealant prior to driving screws.

Please note that no screws should be installed through the sill which is not recommended due to breach of watershed design.

The interior void between the existing frame and new window is filled with non-expanding foam to insulate the unit. Excess foam is either cleaned

immediately with solvent or allowed to harden and then scraped off.

Use of the Simonton provided interior finishing strip, with “peel and stick” 3M adhesive can be used to address the gap between the new installed unit and the frame on the interior if no interior stop or drywall/stucco return is present.

The stucco flange is applied to the accessory groove of the exterior frame after a bead of sealant is applied to the groove.

The stucco flange has ridges on its back to assist in scoring for sizing appropriately into the opening.

The stucco flange should be cut to allow minimal clearance tolerance once the window is installed. The small gap left on the entire perimeter should be then sealed with the appropriate sealant.

The stucco flange can be cut to fit with snips, leaving a minimal gap which is then sealed.

This application can be modified to adapt to most installation needs.
