“Foreign Languages and Cream Cheese: Spread ‘Em Around!”
Many Languages: One United Voice
Why This Theme?• We are a linguistically diverse group of language
educators• Each language organization offers a unique
perspective on language acquisition and learning• As language organizations we collectively have
knowledge about language, linguistics, cultures, and literatures that we need to share with the world
• To move forward as a profession, we have to present a consistent and unified message to our stakeholders
• Following up on the 2011 ACTFL theme of Collaboration…
Features of the 2012 Annual Convention and World Languages
Expo • Co-host is the Pennsylvania State Modern
Language Association (PSMLA)• Some 32 pre- and post convention workshops will
provide more in-depth training on various topics• Approximately 7,000 attendees?• Approximately 225 exhibiting companies• 2013 Teacher of the Year will be announced• Over 500 educational sessions ranging from early
language learning to technology in the classroom• An Awards Ceremony where 10 awards will be
given to various individuals for their outstanding contributions in the field of language education
Plenaries iN Planning• Update on ACTFL Research
Priorities Initiative• Panel of PreK-12 and
College/University State and National-Level Authorities providing their take on foreign language education for the 2lst century
• Panel of Key Leaders from Language Organizations proposing what they see as the key issues for foreign languages
KeyNote Speaker• Dr. K. David Harrison, Professor of
Linguistics at Swarthmore College and author of The Last Speakers: The Quest to Save the World’s Most Endangered Languages and When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World’s Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge
• He is the subject of the DVD The Linguist and will provide a screening of the DVD after his keynote
