REVIEW -The Scientific Method

The Scientific Method

The scientific method is the only scientific way accepted to back up a theory oridea. This is the method on which all research projects should be based. TheScientific Method is used by researchers to support or disprove a theory.

The Scientific Method

The Scientific Method involves 6 steps: State the ProblemGATHER INFORMATIONHypothesisTest HypothesisRecord and AnalyzeConclusion

The Scientific Method

STATE THE PROBLEMQuestion- You ask a question about what you observe. State the problem or question.

The Scientific Method

GATHER INFORMATIONObservation- You observe something in the material world, using your senses or machines which are basically extensions of those senses.

AH—Look at this!

The Scientific Method

HYPOTHESISHypothesis- You predict what you think the answer to your question might be.

The Scientific Method

TEST THE HYPOTHESISMethod - You figure out a way to test whether the hypothesis is correct. The outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).Record and analyze data.

The Scientific Method

RECORD AND ANALYZEResult- You do the experiment using the method you came up with and record the results. You repeat the experiment to confirm your results by retesting.

The Scientific Method

CONCLUSIONState Conclusion- You state whether your prediction was confirmed or not and try to explain your results.

Could David had more than two hypothesis? If so, give one more. (3-4 complete sentences)

Put in order:◦ Hypothesizing◦ Conclusion◦ Experimentation/Test the Hypothesis◦ Gather information◦ Record/Analyze◦ State the Problem

Scientific Method

Experimental group◦ The group on which a test is performed

Control group◦ The group used as a standard for comparison

Constants◦ Conditions present in the control and

experimental groups that remain the same throughout the experiment

Variables◦ Conditions present only in the experimental group◦ Always make sure there is only one per

experiment!

TERMS TO KNOW

Come up with a problem, some information on it and formulate a Hypothesis.

HOMEWORK

What is the difference between an experimental group and a control group?

What is the difference between a constant and variable in an experiment?

Practice – “See Saw”

CONCLUSION

TEST HYPOTHESIS

FORMULATE HYPOTHESIS

GATHER INFORMATION

STATE THE PROBLEM

Could a skydiver whose parachute failed to open hit a playground seesaw and send a small girl flying seven stories high?

WRITE YOUR OWN GRAPHIC ORGANIZER WITH THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN YOUR JOURNAL!!!

CONCLUSION

If a skydiver’s parachute didn’t’ open and he landed on a seesaw with a little girl on the other end of the seesaw, she would fly at least 7 stories high.

TEST HYPOTHESIS

Video showed the girl passed the wall designated as 7 stories. She actually went further.

FORMULATE HYPOTHESIS If a skydiver’s parachute didn’t open and he landed on a seesaw with a little girl on the other end, she would fly 7 stories high.

GATHER INFORMATION

Drop something on a seesaw like device the other side will pop up.

STATE THE PROBLEM

Could a skydiver whose parachute failed to open hit a playground seesaw and send a small girl flying seven stories high?

Partner with someone at your table and share your

homework assignment. -Work together to put it in a graphic organizer.

-Put both of your names on each other’s Graphic Organizer (G.O).

-Paste your partner’s G.O. in your journal and date it.

Know the correct order of the Scientific Method

Know how to apply the Scientific Method Know the following terms:

◦ Scientific Method◦ Hypothesis◦ Experimental Group◦ Control Group◦ Constants◦ Variables
