We wish our G.A.D. community a very festive holiday season and best wishes for the New Year!! May all of you have a chance to make some wonderful memories with your family and friends!!
Dear Parents and Guardians, We are coming to the end of our first term. November was an eventful month with our Guru Nanak Dev Ji Prakash Divas and Rememberance Day Assembly, STEM Contest and our Surrey Food Bank Drive. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Langar Seva for our Gurpurab celebrations; it is with the support of the parents that the school enviroment is even more enriched. We are wrapping up this term with more opportunities for our students to excel! We also hope the new year will bring new and challenging learning opportunities as well as development for all students. As a new month starts, we are shifting our focus to the value of “Compassion/Charity”. During this holiday season, it is important that we take the time to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate, to be in the spirit of Seva. The school will be having a number of initiatives to help our students build their empathy and show concern for others.
December 8th – Winter Art Contest December 15th – Final Day for Afterschool Clubs December 18th – Report Cards Issued December 19th – Religious Assembly December 20th – Parent Teacher Conferences December 21st – Christmas Concert
Our G.A.D.’s The Parent Support Group would like to thank everyone who came out for our very first Movie Night on Friday December 1st. It was a great turn out and we appreciate everyone who supported us by attending. A very heartfelt thank you to the students, teachers, parents and administrators that worked so hard to make this event a success. More event details will be shared in the Parent Support Group newsletter next week.
Report Cards will go home on Monday December 18th. Please keep in mind that our reports cards are in a format
that reflects the new curriculum. The new curriculum is driven by the Curricular and Core Competencies. It is no longer content focused as the former curriculum was. Please feel free to explore BC’s new curriculum:
https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/ Assembly for Shaheedi Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and Mata Gujuriji and Chaar Sahibzadee, who sacrificed their lives for the Sikh religion, will be held on Tuesday December 19th from 8:40 am – 9:40 am. Please join us in celebrating with poetry and Kirtan. We will also be using this opportunity to recognize the winners from the Art Contest.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday December 20th from 1 pm – 5 pm. You will be getting notifications with your child’s report. Please take this opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with them and to
meet with your child’s teacher. During these conferences we will be asking for your feedback regarding our current report cards and what you would like to see in the reports. The Christmas Concert will be held on Thursday December 21st in the gym. Please join us at 1:00 pm to celebrate the festive season with a variety of songs and dances performed by our students. This year our theme is: “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. We are fortunate to have our band students, along with their teacher Mr.Brad Muirhead, playing some live music to accompany our performances. There will be no admission fee for this event, but we will be accepting donations of non-perishable items for the food bank at the door. NOVEMBER’S STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Winter Break – The school will be closed for winter break from December 25th – January 5th. School will re-open on January 8th
, 2018
For the month of November we held our annual food drive for the Surrey Food Bank. Thanks to all of your generosity over 1000 items were
donated! Congratulations to Mrs. Khela’s 1C and Ms. Kaur’s 5B for bringing in the most donations per student! E-Newsletter – Please feel free to download the newsletter from our website (www.gadschool.com) and please make sure your email is up to date with the office as we send an email notification when the newsletter is ready for download. If you do require a printed newsletter, please notify the office in writing. Please check in with our website regularly for all current/updated information. Kindergarten Registration 2017 – 2018: Admissions to kindergarten for the year 2017-2018 are now open. If you have or know of a child who will be five years old by December 31, 2017, please contact the school as soon as possible to book a tour and/or reserve your spot for next year. Student of the Month – Each month the teachers pick one student that they believe went above and beyond in the classroom. Congratulations to this month’s winners! Keep up the great work! School Garden initiative – Grade 8’s are starting a school garden to promote healthy eating habits. This garden will also serve as an outdoor classroom for all grades as it will enhance learning for all students by providing different learning centers. This program is sponsored by B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom. A reminder to parents - please make sure your children come to school in their proper uniform. Also, since the weather is getting cold and icy, please walk your children to the building when you drop them off as the sidewalks and parking lot can be slippery and icy. After school clubs – The final day of afterschool clubs is Friday, December 15th. Information about clubs for term 2 will come in the new year.
