We need to talk about payroll

A shout-out to small business owners with better things to do

Running a small business isn’t like any other job – it’s more like a hundred jobs rolled into one.

On any given day you might be...

– Serving customers– Calling suppliers– Hiring staff– Paying your employees– Filing taxes– Mopping floors

Baking pastries

…and if you’re lucky you might spend some time doing whatever it is you actually do:

Building websites

Selling bikes

Fixing cars

The point is:

You know what you do best, and it’s definitely not all the other time-consuming back-office stuff that goes with running a business.

It’s the thing you actually started your business to do.

One job in particular eats up small business owners’ time like no other.

It’s complex and confusing – and it’s way too important to risk getting it wrong.

We need to talk about payroll.

As a small business owner, making payroll is your single greatest priority.

And managing it is hard work – even for the smallest businesses.

In fact, processing payroll and filing taxes can be really stressful for theperson in charge.

(We’re guessing that’s you.)

It’s something you need to keep on top of month to month, week to week or even day to day. Ouch.

You need to calculate employee wages and make sure you deduct the right amounts from paychecks, so you can file the correct federal, state and local taxes.

That means working out exactly what you owe in social security and medical and other benefits payments, and making sure you get them done right and filed on time.

And there’s the seasonal or occasional stuff like figuring out how and when to pay bonuses , or adding new employees to the payroll – and making sure they’re set up with the right details for the state they’re in.

It’s far from ideal – and that’s when things go according to plan.

Then there’s the times when they don’t.

That’s usually due to: – Late or incorrect payroll payments – Late or incorrect tax filings

These things can be a real headache to fix – and they can earn you some costly penalties.

Remember what we said earlier about payroll being a job that not every small business owner excels at? Yeah, that.

The good news is there’s a better way. One that helps make sure your small business payroll and tax filings are treated with the care they really deserve.
