The Waterworks thatbuilt the West

Panama Canal

Mulholland Aqueduct

Terry Onley

The French started the Canal, anddid a lot of work on it…

They ran outof money.

The Panama Canal made it one heck ofa lot easier to get ships from the Eastcoast to the West…

Big, fat ships…

Maybe that’s why folks are working hard at enlarging the Canal right now.

See the big celebration? That was at the start of the Canal enlargementproject.

Lots of balloons

Probably by the ownersof big, fat ships…

William Mulholland’s LA aqueduct project brought waterto Los Angeles, creating an oasis in the desert…

The ambitious project effectively made Los Angeles

what it is today, as well as greening up the Imperial

Valley, and the pockets of many well-placed

investors…

Of course, the water had to come from somewhere, and Owens Valley, which was an oasis of sorts…

Is now a desertof sorts.

Owens lake on a good day…

Not a good day.
